This being my very first post of a project I made is a bit daunting. So here goes! I am building this to add to my O scale train set. The model can be found on the Disney Experience site. The Disney Experience (http://www.Disneyexperience.com)

The Temple is quite a project with 491 pieces. The finished width is 13 inches, height 21 inches and the depth is 16 inches. That being said, it is a little too large for my train layout. At first, I tried several printer settings to get it down to fit into my available real estate. I wound up printing two pages per sheet and went to work. That gave me something about 13 inches high and about 8 inches on the sides. (And saved on paper!)

The directions are very important on this build. I often built a part then had an "ah ha" moment and printed out the part again. Mine is made of 65 lb. card. I have a few more in progress photos for the next post.
Thanks-

Welcome! :)

You're right, the temple is really B. I. G. big for an O gauge environment.

I used it as-is for several years on my Christmas display since I needed to fill the space while I worked on other things. When the time came to rebuild it, I scaled it back to a model about 40% of the original size:

The temple looks Great.
Would be fabulous terrain for an Indiana Jones roleplaying game.

Winding up my work on the Temple of the Forbidden Eye. As it is destined for an O gauge train layout I may need to make the steps removable. Tight fit between the tracks!
As the build progressed, I discovered, by reading the instructions, that numbers were printed on parts indicating the part they were to connect with. Very helpful point! I thought they were something I dribbled on the paper.
Some platforms have squared edges and others have rolled edges. I tried to color all edges to eliminate white lines. Lastly, I used some "underbrush" foam foliage to cover my slip sups and increase the impact of the model. I also stuck in a few plastic snakes for excitement.
All in all, a very enjoyable build that gives great results. (I can not determine if the designer has made any other models)
This will be added to the three haunted mansions, Nautilus, Hooks Pirate Ship and my monorail.

Great model and beautiful build. One can almost see the jungle monkeys hopping about. :-)

Maybe I got the photo attaching thing sort of worked out. I do want to be able to insert information or comments on the photo itself, so I will keep working at it. The sticky seems a good place to start. : How To: post pictures to a thread
Sorry for the amateurish confusion!
The first photo shows the different styles of decks/layers. Second is my method of assembling the layers. (Using 3/4 inch bar stock as weights and building assistants.) 3. is rolling the edge on some of the layers. 4-folding the top dome, 5 is my attempt to cover up as many mistakes as I can! The last view (6) is a general over view of the completed Temple, Slightly modified for fit and function on the layout.
I also put a few little green snakes in the foliage. "It always has to be snakes"'I want to work in a few photos of the grand kids. They really enjoy finding themselves in the layout.

It's coming along great! I really like the addition of the shredded foam foliage - it adds tremendously to the "abandoned" look.

You have a card model of the 'Jolly Roger' ??? Please spill the beans!
Long time back some one at Disney Experience was researching one.but I've not seen it published.

I do have an original Revel plastic model of it, but that's too valuable to build now, so I'd really love a paper one.

BUT....keep in mind this is a model of the restaurant that lived in Fantasyland from 1955 to 1982. You'll have to overlook "the side door"! LOL ;)

I'm well aware that it is a model of 'The Chicken of the Sea' restaurant Becky, but if you do your homework, she was originally built as the 'Jolly Roger' and later converted into a CotS restaurant. I guess I'll have to go searching for the pictures now.

I've just been looking back through Robert Nava's fantastic video build (I haven't watched #16 yet). I never dreamt that it would end up so big and detailed, but it does look great in the pictures. I wonder if it's within my humble abilities to remove and patch over that door?

It really is a Jolly Roger model that I desire, not a model of a restaurant that I've never eaten in. One day I hope to be well enough to see for myself how good a copy the one in Paris is, but that likelihood is looking slimmer now.

The more I search through my (very) loosely catalogued picture files, the more I'm becoming convinced that what I remembered as early pictures of the 'Chicken' would seem to be pictures of the Paris ship. I'm SURE I've got pictures of the Florida one wearing the 'Jolly Roger' name somewhere though. Perhaps they were taken in the period between the removal of the Chicken of the sea concession and it's final destruction when they tried to move it.

Or, more likely it's a touch of senile dementia setting in.

Sod the potential value of it ... I think I'm gonna build one of the plastic ones.

July 18th 1955 (first day Disneyland was open to the general public):

She was still under construction during that first summer:

But eventually she took on the look we all knew her by:

I used the Wicked Wench because, well....I'm impatient. ;)

PS. They did consider moving the restaurant as part of the 1982 remodel of Fantasyland. But, believe it or not, nobody at Disney could figure out how to move a concrete pirate ship without breaking it. Even 30 feet or so!

And there was never a Jolly Roger that elaborate at the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World. Only the Wicked Wench inside Pirates of the Caribbean. HOWEVER. There was a small wrecked ship at Discovery Island:

Sorry everyone, I am asleep at the switch here, Be home in a few days and I will look into my model. It is Red and I do not recall a door (not a hatch if it is a restaurant!) and let everyone what I have. It was free someplace.

Low and behold,
Disneyexperience.com papermodels, page 1, The Wicked Wench
It seems it is a bit simpler than the model Becky Suggested, but I think I like the restaurant model, much more intricate and “flashy” with cool details! I believe removing the door is possible by some repainting or my way, cut and paste! (Beat to fit, paint to match!)
So many models, so little time...

OOOOh! Shock and horror! What a blooper Mike!

The Wicked Wench was never Hook's Pirate Ship, unless Disney has been committing sacrilege again, like he did with the Peter Pan/Hook re-enactments on what I seem to remember was a repro USS Constitution, or possibly some other historic US ship. Google doesn't want to tell me it's name. Just wants to tell me about Disney Cruise Liners.

The Wicked Wench was under Cap'n Jack Sparrow's command when she was burned and sunk. She was then later resurrected by Davy Jones to become The Black Pearl.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/donnad/the-little-known-story-of-captain-jack-sparrows-origin?utm_term=.ysPpXdDQg#.nsAq6j59A

There is a book published telling of Jack's early life, but it's no longer on my shelf ... lent to a friend ... and I can't remember it's title. It's a damn good read, and does explain many of the happening untold by Disney.

As to my making a Hook's Ship ... the long awaited Chicken of the Sea from Robert Nava is gonna be way too big for me, so I guess the old Plastic ones are looking favourite. That old original one is worth over £100 now, but it's only money, and I did buy it with the intention of building it. The Ghost Ship is only worth £20 now, so I just might explore that first.Pity such things can't be scanned and reprinted like our paper models, eh?

I just found that Prequel book on Amazon It's called "The Price of Freedom" by A C Crispin.

Hum, never heard about the backstory. I need to research much better! Thanks for the info, another book to track down.
To make a smaller model, I just print at say, 70% or I do two pages on one sheet. (Really saves a lot of paper!)
Real estate is pretty tight on my layout display!

JohnM

Be warned, "The Price of Freedom" is an out of print hard cover book. Selling at quite inflated prices here in UK.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/1423107047/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

I too will certainly be looking at removing the door and reducing the scale of the Chicken of the Sea when it is published, but it is looking maybe too detailed to reduce it as far as I'd like.

The designer mentioned that Chicken of the Sea May be released before the end of the year. The Wicked Wench model may still be a good bet. I think theWench is closer to the cannon firing ship (it did have Barbarossa on it for a while) in the Florida Disney PotC ride.

The Wicked Wench:

The "vessel" often referred to as "The Jolly Roger" was only labeled as "Chicken of the Sea".

Check out the website who's name appears on these photos. At any rate, the design of the 2 vessels is similar and the WW may well have simply used the restaurant's plans.
