Secure log in

Each time I log in, I receive a warning that this log in site is not secure. Why is that?

in reality it is two things
1. the current generation of internet browsers are building in more and more security, and that leads to point 2
2. there are digital "certificates" that proclaim that the ownership of the site has taken steps to secure the site in regards to personal information.

We are aware that we need such a certificate and it then just needs to be added to the site.
But with everything that has been going on in our lives, Jason and mine, we haven't gotten around to applying for, paying, and ultimately adding it to the forum.

A simple fix to not see that warning, just stay logged in all the time(most of us do so anyway) :)

Browsers like Chrome whine and complain about any website which doesn't have a certificate. Fortunately you don't have to pay - https://letsencrypt.org/ offers free certificates and is considered to be a reputable site.

The whole https stuff is the software companies having some thing to point to to say they are doing something about security. In the case of Microsoft this would be believable only if the browser team walked along the 26 mile route on the Great Wall of China (5000+ steps) on their knees while self-flagellating as a limited expiation of previous security lapses.

When you get that warning, you should be able to whitelist the site.
Who/what software is giving you the warning?

I'm using the Mozilla browser with Norton safe web and Norton Safe search.

ah Norton! The worst for false warnings, and blocking things it shouldn't!
Some people say Norton is the best because it catches everything.
But I say Norton is the worst...because it catches everything!

Obviously theres nothing wrong with a non-secure site.
As long as you know who's running the site
and you are careful what personal information you offer the site.
I say, when offering payment info or banking info, the site MUST be secure.
This is only to avoid realtime hacking of your information.

Theres not much that can be done about a site that is hacked and a stolen database.
even a secure site cannot protect you against that kind of information loss.

But I don't get warnings about this site being unsecure even when I am logged out.
So it must be a Norton thing, or you need to whitelist the site in Firefox.
I think there might be a setting for the secure site warnings?
Maybe yours is set to warn you constantly.

I am using Norton Security and have Safe Web and Safe Search enabled. Browser is Google and/or Edge.

It could, however, be Safe Web or Safe Search misbehaving with something in relation to Mozilla. Turn both and try and see if the warning goes away.

If you have Norton Security fully enabled and you increase the security setting on the Mozilla (if not done already) you will still be safe if you pay attention to the browser behaviour.

I am not so certain Norton produces lots of false warnings - the warning we discussed out of forum was legit, highlighting undesirable behaviour, EVEN THOUGH THIS APPEARS not to be dangerous.

While it is not serious (in this site), it can be annoying to see that warning each time.

Here's how you can disable that warning in Mozilla:

To Remove the Warning Panels

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste insec and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the security.insecure_field_warning.contextual.enabled preference to switch the value from true to false

(4) Assume this login could be easily stolen and avoid re-using it on important sites
It just disables the warning.
Doesn't mean the security certiificate has been updated.
So be careful when loging in to other sites and use all the usual precautions with your passwords.

Yes. This is the only site with the warning. I can't stay logged in anymore since I'm automatically logged out when ever I close the browser window. I've gotten so I don't mind logging bak in each time so perhaps it's a good thing.
