i am currently stuck with only the ability to do cgi work at the moment. i was looking through some of my references and became intrigued with this ship.at first i was just experimenting to see how i would cope with the catamaran style hull. well 20 hours later i was pretty deep into design.

Nice work - this is probably the most high tech naval vessel in the world I have seen. It is a real test bed for modern computerized control, sensor, communication and instrument systems.

BTW - good work on the Bofors 57mm gun

thanks b-manic. adding details here and there. threw on some simple color to break up the monotony of staring at white forms for hours. and added a MQ-8 Firescout.

Trent this is great! Definitely a subject that deserves some coverage. These stealth ships look right out of Star Trek or something. I wonder what Admiral Nimitz would say if he could see these ships....

I would love to see a kit come out of this- or at least a set of plans and templates!
Superb rendering- quality on par with the conceptual art you see in USNI's "Proceedings".

I just got back from visiting my brother who is one of the project managers for this vessel, and also for the second trimaran, the LCS-4 USS Coronado. He had asked if there were any paper models of the Independence, and I told him that I put in a request for one. He'll be thrilled to hear that you are designing this!

ok here it goes(hint, hint) does he have any reference for the independence? whats available is scarce. im not sure on how accurate ill end up with on details. so the LCS4 is the same style. what is the LCS3? im also going to do the uss freedom(LCS1) i like the way it looks.

and heres my little firescout

Nothing,

I'll try and get some reference material, but he is a bit close-mouthed about the project. The LCS-3 is a copy of the LCS-1 USS Freedom. The LCS1 and LCS2 are to compete to decide which hull type would win out for the full LCS contract of some 50 ships. However, the Navy was afraid that they would lose all the talent and experience that the builders gained and decided to build two more ships to keep the folks working until a final decision was made.

Quick update: My brother regretfully cannot provide any data due to sensitivity, but said that there are brand new pix on Austal - Leading the World in the Design and Construction of Customised Aluminium Commercial and Defence Vessels (http://www.austal.com)
This has shots from the latest builders trials. The posters and brochure are pretty informative.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Looks great.:)

What software are you using to create the ship and Fire Scout and did you export it to a paper model program to create the Fire Scout?

What paper model program did you use for that conversion by the way?

I'm keen on finding a decent software route from 3D model to paper model.

thank you everyone for the nice comments.this has been a long and difficult development. so i am especially happy to have someone like Barry to take notice!

well the only thing left is the black hawk. and i must admit after studying Barry's blackhawk, i came real close to trashing mine. but i knuckled down and started building to see what the end looks like before i decide. mine is somewhat daunting as i ended up with 60 pieces.(Barry's comes in around 30)
this is 14 of them-

Barry
10-20-2009, 05:36 PM
It looks like a blackhawk and that is hard at 1/200th. I think it is too close to the real thing in the 3d drawing. There are so many conflicting curves and cut outs in such a small space with this helicopter. I ended up taking some curves out. It's a pity the glue joint has split because it is drawing the eye over to it. If that was fixed and the front screen was moved slightly downward they would be very much the same.

Not to be a rivet counter........... but actually that is a "Sea Hawk".

Black Hawks are ARMY birds........ and while they do occasinally visit...... they rarely stick around that far from hard ground:D

john ive been calling it blackhawk as a habbit. black hawk comes more readilly to the mind. but you are correct.

LCS -2 USS Independence - 1/200 scale - who could hold back - I didn't - and already bought and downloaded.

But, I have a question - could it reasonably be built as a Waterline model? I have a number of other 1/200 scale ships and have built them all that way.

I've been through the model - all 56 pages! and it really isn't clear for me if the outriggers are supported through the main deck or not.

Thanks!

the center hull would be easy just leave off the bottom section. the sponsons would have to be cut at the water line and have the bottom reinforced. they are modular and glue flush to the outer edge of the upper mid hull that sticks out from the main hull.

I've looked over the schematics (haven't printed the kit out yet) and am a little confused about the parts numbering on the hull and sponsons. Also, any tips on building them, such as do you build the hull sides first and then insert the formers?

nothing
11-04-2009, 08:26 AM
rmks2000. each section is a contained module. meaning it doesnt rely on other sections for construction. the top structures fold down the sides put in formers. the mid sections glue sides to bottom then place formers. lower hull build the formers and roll skin onto them. sponsons score centerline form v and put in formers. does that help?

Scott K

There is a cardstock model avaialble at Ecardmodels.com, that would be a good starting point. In particular, here; 1/200 LSC2 USS Independence Paper Model (http://www.ecardmodels.com/index.php/1-200-lsc2-uss-independence-paper-model.html) It's the same model you can see being developed earlier in this thread.

Thanks Scott,

Those plans i found somewhere else as free download (if anyone need, just ask and i will send).
Unfortunately, those are helpfull for outside details like windows, etc. I need hull sections and water lines because intention is to build 1/65 boat with graupner water jet engines. This scale was result of minimum inner space of center hull required to assamble turbines. This is good also for smoke simulators, evacuation pipes for cooling water, etc.
As a sample, i just finished after 2 years and from two "build the bismark" kits, R/C bismark and tirpitz. Because my very young son is interested to help his father and to build something, i decided targets for next 2-3 years: LCD2, Visby Class Corvette - "GHOST" and 1/6 JU87D2 winter cammo 1944 russian front. I selected those ships because they ar spectacular on one side, large scale building allow to make very nice details and are easy to build shapes. Maybe later my son will be more interested in research, read and learn than usual youth habbits - facebook, drink and clubs... :)
Back on track - Thanks again for your comment and maybe you know something also about hull sections and water lines drawings.

Adrian
