A long time ago (2.5 years) in a forum far far away I started a thread on the Disney Cars models....Well it's time to hoist up the mantle of "Finish that project or at least do a few more kits" and return to the subject again. (For the record I never "abandon" a project - I'm just not done yet.......;))

Most of you are probably already familiar with the models but for our newer members I'll do a quick recap.

I'm modelling all the major characters and quite a few of the minor ones.

At present there are 12 models available on my Beta Page (http://www.paperian.com/webdude/bl.htm) - all in PDO format:

Which brings us to the present......

Time to bow to the semi regular onslaught of requests and tackle Lightning McQueen. The 3D is nearly done.

Was always you'd get back to these. Nice one. I just found out another cars film is due out in 2011 as well.

I think I still have fillmore around somewhere. It spent a while on a shelf in our local childrens ward, when they cleaned up I got it back. I see if I can find him/it.

hi Webdude
did Mater a couple of months back, a little bit tricky for a beginner but i managed somewhat to assemble something thet at least looked like him
my son loves Cars the movie and he will be on my back untill i built all of them for him :)
we have waited a loong time for Lightning
will he be in a scale that fits in the trailer?
are you going to update the trailer with the interior?
questions from my 8 year old son
think we might tackle Mac and the trailer soon

Seriously, it is good to see you returning to this series.

Don't be heartbroken...(It's only a model...NO Monty Python Camelot jokes please - that's another thread..)

Ramone IS on the list _ I just can't decide if I want Low Rider or with the hydraulics up....I want these to be simple so it's probably going to be Low Rider.

And, speaking of the list here's the remaining designs list:
Lightning McQueen
Sally
Chick Hick
Flo
Ramone
Boost
Snot Rod
Lizzie
Stanley (The Statue)
Tractor
Dusty Rusteze
Rusty Rusteze
Wingo
Tex Dinoco

That'll keep me busy along with other design projects for some time I think.

Håkan,

To try to answer your son's questions as best as I can:

1. The models are in scale to each other based on height. (This is how I usually work with 'sets') Lightning may not fit in the trailer but he will look good sitting next to Mack.

2. Lightnings' trailer interior is one of those trans-dimensional areas, MUCH bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, like a womans purse. (Don't believe me? ask a woman to empty her purse and measure cubic area of the contents vs area in the purse. Scary stuff!)

I may do a trailer upfit later with interior panels only and rear doors that open but it won't be until the major character models themselves are done.

I'd love to also see the major buildings from Radiator Springs: Flo's Diner, the Motel, Luigi's Tire Shop, or at least a smaller variant of these to use for display bases for the characters.

I'm definitely building these for my boy. He'll be all over them.

Well, a few hours sleep and many hours at the job later I now have had about 45 minutes to continue. The body's roughed in but looking like I may have to incorporate two internal formers (I hate using formers and only do as a very very very last resort) to keep the bodylines flowing smooth, one at the "firewall" and one at the "trunkwall" areas. Wow. I wonder how much I'll get done after tomorrow when I'm off for the rest of the week??:D

hi Rick
made a testbuild of Lightning
may i suggest putting tabs on the bottom parts to make the sides easier to mount plus also on the front sides around the wheels and at the rear spoiler all the way down
that would make him easier to build and get more even edges
best wishes

:(So, I came home thursday to find a Failed CPU fan and melted CPU. Alas poor Wintermute V is no more although drives and data should be intact. however with three school age children and school recently started it will be some weeks before Wintermute VI is purchased, assembled and activated and data transferred over (Was ready to go to SATA anyway so this is the best reason possible). What does this mean? Once again the Cars are on hiatus......

Does it mean no model design? No. I type this from Michelles' laptop (Laptop computer...stop grinning....:D:eek:) where I do actually have some project files so in the meantime I will be continuing The Paradigm City Project (http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/figurines-anime/4534-paradigm-city-project-big-o.html) and I'm going to recreate one more thread from that other nameless-end-of-the-alphabet forum and get back to those models as welll......

Sorry folks. I'll get back on these as soon as I can.

printed Lightning again to add flaps so i can do a etter build of him so at least we have those to work with in the mean time

It is appx 3:53 AM here and I'm enjoying my second cup of coffee. At 4:30 AM I will unbox the new Dell Inspiron PC sitting on the kitchen table.

With everything going according to plan I should have all data from the old PC transferred over to this one by the evening.

For those that will ask:

AMD Phenom 64x3 Triple-Core 8450+
8GB Ram
640GB HD
24" Hi-Def Flatpanel Monitor

I'll keep you posted!

More importantly - What is the name of your new machine now that wintermute has expired? Neuromancer was one of Gibson's best.

TheWebdude
09-04-2009, 05:38 AM
The name Wintermute is only given to PC's that I purchase components for and assemble myself. There will be another Wintermute but not for a while.:(

Have hit my first snag already.....All drives in ths pc are SATA....Was hoping the DVD was still IDE so I could jack the old drives in for fast data copy (GOOD Plan....just didn't work out.....)

Me being me I do have a 'plan B' - neighbor has an HP and desperately wants more drives...also has a 500GB SATA drive he can't use so plan B is to give him the IDE drives, hook em' in, and (ugh) transfer data using flash drives (Gonna be a lot of trips at 10GB per but beats burning to CD or DVD). Plus I get boosted to 1.1TB storage on the new PC.:D

Well, that is now my Friday schedule so I'm off to it!!

airdave
09-04-2009, 05:59 AM
might I recommend you check the motherboard,
many do have an unused IDE connector (you only need an 80pin cable)
and it will support up to 2 IDE drives

(I could be wrong on this, but I think its usually a blue connector)

if not, consider a USB connection for the IDE drive.
I bought one of those external USB drive cases and I installed my old IDE HD in it
when my last PC died.

TheWebdude
09-04-2009, 06:16 AM
Chuckle...Thanks Dave but I popped the case open before I did anything else.;)

No IDE slot at all "and" it's a narrow case so I can't even jack in my PCI to IDE card........also nothing but SATA connectors on the power supply so I'm good to go on adding the additional 500GB HD but will be walking those flash drives a lot today..

cMags
09-04-2009, 09:44 AM
If your neighbor's machine supports both SATA and IDE, can you copy the data directly to the 500GB drive on his machine then bring that home? Easier than multiple transfers.

Also the IDE->USB idea is a good one. Usually $15 or $20 will get you an adapter, like this one:

Newegg.com - BYTECC BT-200 USB2.0 to IDE Cable With Power Adapter - Adapters & Gender Changers (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812156101)

2Kamser
09-04-2009, 11:40 AM
hi webdude, cmags in on the right track i think, converting the old IDE's into usb drives and use them for backups, word of warning though - if they are old drives then beware because your backups might need backing up
another trick i use now and then is a DVD/RW that i can save on and rewrite as my needs demands it

TheWebdude
09-05-2009, 04:52 AM
2Kamser and cmags,

Thanks for the suggestions. If they were relatively new drives I would probably be able to quantify the conversion to USB cost. They aren't and I can't.:) Cmags, my neighbor doesn't need the sata drive because he can't use it. Besides, he owes me plenty for all the "I can't open my email" or "My computers doing something funny" trips (at least 8-10 per week - seriously:eek:) so that sata drive is already in my new PC. On the upside, I did give him all of Wintermutes old hardware that will work in exchange for the drive. He's actually getting the better end (for him - ATI All In Wonder card, SoundBlaster Audigy with external Audigy Drive and Remote AND my old drives...and RAM....) and I get to bring his PC here to transfer data via flash drive...doing that now. Spent yesterday transferring from Michelle's Laptop (again no jokes please:cool:) and deciding whether or not to keep the OS on the new machine (Vista Premium 64bit) or roll back to XP - Going to keep the Vista since I get a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Dell when it's released.

TheWebdude
09-05-2009, 05:28 AM
On a final note I have just successfully transferred the Disney Cars folder (Remember the Disney Cars? This is really a thread about the Disney Cars...:D) to the new PC. I will resume design after I finish data salvage from the old drives and hopefully be back to regular progress reports by Monday. Have a great weekend everyone!

Hiya.
Now this might sound a bit crazy but I start from the beginning.
I've been instructed that I'm to decorate the Christmas tree this year for the local christmas tree festival which is all done for charity (see link below), and they have chosen "route 66" which brings the Disney/Pixar film "Cars" to mind.
Now I am a bit of a amateur/novice paper modeller and I was hoping to make the models to put on the tree but unfortunately I can't seem to find any.
Can any one help me out?

There are a lot of Cars models out there. Webdude's were fairly complex because they were excellent models. Disney has a few simpler versions and Paper Replika has some that are a bit more complex. There are also some Cars projects here at the forum.
