View Full Version : Is there a Redstone-Jupiter C available?

I've got a plastic cutaway model of Explorer I that I've built for my brother, which he's highly anticipating. It's on a very nice display base, which I've tried to make look like a museum-quality base, complete with a cutaway diagram, the ubiquitous picture of three engineers(including von Braun) holding a replica of it, a picture of the launch, and a couple of brass plaques: one with the name of the satellite and a brief description of the accomplishments of it. But I'd like to make a small model of the launch vehicle for it, the Redstone-Jupiter C. Is there a model of this available on the net somewhere? I did a Google search for one, but it didn't turn up anything other than a Mercury Redstone rocket.

Delta Studios

Spacecraft Paper Models - PROJECT MERCURY (http://www.delta7studios.com/mercury%20models.htm)

I do not have the Mercury model but I have the Gemini set and it is very nice

Ok I make the mistake to think you ask for the Mercury Redstone.

Revell they make the Jupiter C plastic model with tower. I had seen that becuase it look very complicated and intersting. I like the intricate part for the launch tower on train tracks.

THis might have it also in paper I have this site mark for a while... http://www.lansbergen.net/ It look like the Juno 1 with Explorer

In plastic: Glencoe has a Jupiter-C topped with Explorer 1; it is a re-release of an old Hawk kit mastered back when Explorer was recent news. I looked on Squadron to see if they currently have it (they don't) but I see it frequently on EvilBay.

Good luck,

Wyvern

Revell 1/110 Jupiter C with gantry, by Frank Spahr (http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/misc/scifi/spahrjc.htm)

I find this on Yahoo. I think it ist the kit from Germany I see at Hobbytown. It has the same train track... I search for Revell Jupiter C

KG_LaLa nailed it - Landsbergen has both the Explorer 1 and Launcher (Juno-1?) posted. At Volkssterrenwacht Philippus Lansbergen (http://www.lansbergen.net/modelbouw.htm) about 3/4 of the way down the page.

Yogi

Clarification - the Jupiter C was renamed Juno at some point. I have no idea why - no Congressman of that name, maybe a large campaign contribution? Anyway, looks like a quick and easy build - and Landsbergen's stuff is well drawn.

I'm looking for something that's more on the order of 1:350 scale or so. I don't want the launch vehicle to overwhelm the satellite, which is the focus of the model. This is why I wanted a paper kit, so I could build it in whatever size I wanted. Thanks for the link, RFN! :D That'll work wonderfully.

It is the same link I provide. In 1/350 it is not going to be very large. The plastic model it is 1/100 and is 7 inches tall.

I'm sorry about that, I went to reply and noticed the link, clicked on it, and when I found what I was looking for I needed to thank someone, so I looked at the post I found the link on. :o

So thanks Lala, that was a major help. :D

Not very large is what I'm going for, so I think 1:350 will work well. As I said, I want the model to not detract from the main display item, the Explorer 1 model.

Here's what I did with it:

I also painted the vanes on the bottom so that the edges and fins would have the same color.

Wow that was fast (even for a rocket). And it look nice as well. I have save a lot of the space rocket sites becuase some of that looks interesting.

Funny thing is, I'm used to making sci-fi kits, which require complex folding and cutting, so building a single tube with a few greebles on the sides is a welcome relief. I actually built it in two hours, while watching "Forever Young" with my parents (an excellent film, btw).

I'll have to build more of these rocket kits. They go together quick and look really cool when finished.

Delta Seven Studios has some great ones. I'm glad you find something that gave the effect you wanted.

You've seen Landsbergen, other good resources for rockets are:
http://jleslie48.com - Lower Hudson Valley Challenger Center E-gift shop
Space flight paper modelling (http://www.cardmodels-r.narod.ru/index-e.htm) - Leo's web site
45 宇宙(人工衛星、ロケット、その他) (http://www.d1.dion.ne.jp/~hamanaga/ThumbLink/Thumb45.html) - Hamanaga, Japanese link site with pictures.
Iceberg and Ninfinger have link sites as well.

Just for interest - I have still got an Estes flying model of the Jupiter C plus Explorer. It is more than 15 years old and has made a great many flights - so it's looking a bit battered now. It lost the original tiny plastic Explorer early on, but I made a replacement.

I've also built the E. Te Groen model from Landsbergen, and it's a beauty.

Would you still have a copy of the PDF for that Jupiter? I'm having no joy searching for it online. Also, it looks like Landsbergen's models pages are gone.

Pem Tech, with the Internet Wayback Machine you can see older snapshots of internet sites. I took this one:

Volkssterrenwacht Philippus Lansbergen (http://web.archive.org/web/20090221002835/http://www.lansbergen.net/modelbouw.htm)

There you can see the models, also I checked and the Juno model works fine.

Oh man!
You are a lifesaver...
At one time, in the distant PC past, I had copies of all those models but they were turned into little binary puddles after my HD crashed.

Thank you for the link, the WayBack Machine will be a useful tool.

Much of what was at Landsbergen was Erik's work. He has many of his models posted here ( Ariespapermodels (http://ariespapermodels.nl/) ) on his own web site.

Erik Traux had a Redstone/Jupiter C but I cannot remember where I downloaded the file at. I think it was either at the Yahoo Paper Space Models message board or Niel's Paper Models. I checked his web site Ares and he has not updated the Redstone section yet. It's a nice model, lots of detail and in 1/96 scale. If you do not like the others, PM with your e-mail and I'll send you the file.:)

OK, since the first request went so well, let us try another...

In my collection there is a printed copy of a Redstone IRBM in olive drab, but the file seems to have slipped town. There is no URL or name on the pages.
Anyone know who, where or how?
