Finally tackling the one that started it all. Going all out using the vectorized update to Ron's great model (was it Mike Hungerford that did it? I forget). At 1:1700 I was afraid this would be quite tedious, but it's not too bad if you take your time. Following the instructions on this one, and its going quite smoothly.

Start with the secondary hull aft:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b121/cmags/cardmodels/NCC1701/IMG_8611.jpg

And a size comparison to my 1701-A test fit:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b121/cmags/cardmodels/NCC1701/IMG_8614.jpg

Next was the bridge. This is very fiddly at this scale. I cut off all the joining tabs for this and used edge-gluing primarily, with a few joining tabs underneath:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b121/cmags/cardmodels/NCC1701/IMGP2556.jpg

And then onto the primary hull. Again I used edge-gluing for this, which came out nice and clean for me, with the exception of the top of the hull because I had tried the tabs first, then cut them off when it didn't line up right:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b121/cmags/cardmodels/NCC1701/IMGP2557.jpg

(The N in NCC does line up correctly when viewed from above or the starboard side - the the scale is so small that even the thickness of 65lb card is enough to make it look misaligned when viewed at an angle! )

More to come! :D

For a 2cm bridge module, that is one *extremely* clean build!!! I'm very impressed so far. Keep 'em comin'! :D

Also, your first instinct was correct: Ron Caudillo made that kit, and he did a fine job of it.

Thanks for the compliments! It is tiny, isn't it?

I know the designer was Ron, his name is all over the parts pages. But I was also able to confirm that Mike Hungerford was the one to vectorize the model and update the graphics. That was the part I wasn't sure about, but am now.

Very nice build so far Chris, as we have all come to expect from you.

Thanks for showing us your build; it's looking GREAT. Mike made a wonderful enhancement and I like seeing how others have modified my original model, Jon Leslie started it.

Your builds are always an inspiration & each, always a step up. Very clean work!!

It nice to see the builders advancing the state of the hobby, & the designers rooting them on!

Thanks to everyone involved in this model.

Following the instructions on this one

So yea, scratch that. :p Next up was the primary hull lower section. I'm never any good at cutting sections out of an already-built part, so I opted to cut the pylon hole out before assembly. I also cut off all the tabs and added my own using bond paper for better fit. I'm glad I went this route because the graphics didn't line up quite right on one of the sections and I needed to remove a small sliver.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b121/cmags/cardmodels/NCC1701/IMGP2562.jpg

With the upper and lower hull sections complete, I added my favorite method of ST saucer section creation. I add thick card pieces along the edge, just a single card thickness in from the edge. I then glue the upper and lower hull together using the provided supports and edge-glue the saucer edge trim in place up against the thick card sections. This results in a nice clean edge and allows for a nice smooth round side rather than folds along the tab edges.

Installed primary hull pylon and built up forward secondary hull. Attached pylon in between secondary hull halves - it all went together nicely.

Coming along real nice. Do you have Pylon support built inside the pylons for supporting the nacelles?

cMags
08-21-2009, 03:12 PM
There's an X shaped pylon support inside the secondary hull to maintain the 45* angle of the pylons. The pylons themselves in the oval shape I feel will be sturdy enough to not have any issues supporting the nacelles. They're already stronger than Chippy's 1701 I built before (check my sig) which only butt-glued to the hull and pylons and that's been holding (at full size) for 6 months now with only a slight sag.

Y'know, as good as this build is turning out, you might consider buying copper paint and painting the deflector dish and amplifier rings.

You know, paint and I don't get along all that well. It tends to get everywhere it's not supposed to.

Plus this was one of the bigger reasons I stopped modeling in plastic - Don't like to paint.

But thanks for the compliment! I'm quite happy with how it's turning out. For me it's more about the build than the end product. :D

I completely understand. The reason I model in paper at all is that you can skip the paintjob and decals.

Or just use the parts from Ron's original files, they're a pretty good copper colour.

Lol, they always have so many tiny parts, and then once you finally finish one, you have to build another! :p

Here's the port nacelle:

And a dry fit onto the hull - looks pretty good:

Trust me, printed copper is *no where near* as good as actual copper paint. Or silver, gold, brass, steel . . . etc, either for that matter. Even better would be an actual metal dish.

I don't expect it is but that's what I did anyway, I'm more than happy with it.

But then it wouldn't be a paper/card model, would it?! :D

The Enterprise is complete! It went together quite nicely and I even got two nacelles that I like on my first try. :)

The only issue I had was that the internal formers/pylon guides wouldn't allow the pylons to sit at the right angles, so I snipped the ends off the pylons leaving only a millimeter or so to go into the nacelle and the hull, which allowed for more play in the angles to line things up right. Probably a case of my messing up the formers but it worked out in the end.

Here we go with lots of pics: :D

Wonderful photos of a very clean build! Thanks for selecting my Enterprise to build.

I really like the idea of you resizing it. I printed one a while ago at 50% (1:1440 scale?) onto 32 lb paper because I thought that the cardstock might be too thick, but I haven't built it (yet).

Thanks for sharing!

Ron, thanks for your comments and even more for your wonderful design. The clean build is a real tribute to its designer.

I had no problems at all with the scale (even smaller than your 1:1440) using 65lb cardstock. I did, however, use normal bond paper as joining tabs and had to cut off most of the existing tabs (as you can see throughout my build). Not that it wouldn't have been possible with the tabs, just that I prefer the edge-glue look.

Awesome, go for it. Thanks to this great modeling community, there's plenty of kits to choose from. Off the top of my head:

TOS NCC-1701:
Chippy Chua's version
Ron's version
Mike Hungerford's vectorized version of Ron's
Pericles' version
Rawen's new Constitution class (though not currently labeled as Enterprise)

TMP NCC-1701 / 1701-A:
Shunichi Makino's 1701-A
My rescale/rework of Shunichi's
Diego Cortes' 1701-A

ST:XI NCC-1701:
Paragons' version
Rawens' version

That's a lot of Kirk! :p

There is really LOTs of Star trek ships...

It can be a good to make a place where can be all these starships for download. Something like general paper star trek site.
Its only an idea.

About tho model:
Absolutely clean build. I like the shot where is all 3 Ent. The TOS ent is best.

Mike Hungerford: NCC-1701 USS 'Enterprise' Model (http://www.chthulhu.com/models/bige.html)

This is the version I built - cleaner lines, easily scalable, adjusted colors, slight modification to the secondary hull. Nice update overall.
