Alright, with all the TOS stuff going on, I inevitably had my own ideas. Some of it is scratch, and its all in 1:1900, but if there's enough interest, I can certainly try polishing them and releasing up-scaled 1:1700 versions.

The first is the USS Lethe, which I confess, I got a lot of inspiration for from SciFi-Meshes.com's user MadKoiFish, and his ship of similar design and same name and registry. Obviously, the majority of the texture is taken from another SFM member, Vektor's re-imagined Constitution class.

Originally laid down as a Constitution class starship, Lethe (and three of her sister ships, also under construction at the time) was chosen, at about 30% of the way through construction, to test several new technologies. The USS Enterprise was also considered for this program, as she was being built at the same time, but was instead finished as a Constitution class, due to pressure to get the flagship out on schedule for her well publicized christening.

Among some of the new technologies included were advances in nacelle design (a line of development that was ultimately abandoned when the later "refit" nacelles were introduced), new armored plating, and a new RCS thruster system. While the altered nacelle design never caught on, the thruster system and armor developed on these ships became Star Fleet standard following a fleet-wide refit program.

Originally recorded as simply an advanced variant of the Constitution class, upon completion of construction of the first example (USS Hamilton, NX-1662), the vessels were reclassified as Hamilton class. The design modifications added an additional two year development and construction time to the ships, which were officially christened three years after their would have been sister ship, Enterprise began service.

After a two year shake-down and evaluation period, all four Hamilton class ships were declared active duty. Over the course of ten years, twelve more examples of this class would be built. With the exception of the USS Ganges (NCC-1690, destroyed in 2265) all Hamilton class starships were given a refit between 2271 and 2274, when they were overhauled in a fashion similar to that of the Constitution class.

Second is the USS Monitor, a multi-purpose design that, obviously, is heavily inspired by Bones' USS Dallas. I don't have a class name for her yet, but I'd be interested in any suggestions.

Anyway, the Monitor type was developed shortly after the Ptolemy class. The idea was to take some of the advancements provided by Hamilton class, as well as the new standardized cargo containers, and make a ship capable of hauling more at once, while still allowing ease of transfer between ships using the same "bracket" docking system. What happened as a result, was the development of even more specialized modules - still interchangeable among ships, that gave Starfleet more versatility.

The first module was the standard cargo pod, of which the Monitor can carry two. A second bracket lock was added for better stability at warp, and to put less stress on the connecting parts.

To be able to haul such heavy loads, the Monitor type needed extra power at sublight, delivered in the form of two additional impulse engines, fed by a second impulse reactor.

The second is actually a set of modules, not just one type, and are obviously designed to boost the Monitor type's ability in combat. Four additional impulse engines and a whopping 20 additional torpedo tubes (though with a significantly smaller magazine than the primary devices aboard the ship), the Monitor could become a force to be reckoned with in battle. Though they did provide additional speed and firepower, some captains and crews complained that the pods were an extra drain on power, and would have preferred fewer tubes with higher magazines, to optimize power use. Use in the field also found that these pods, while useful, were often the first target of enemy ships, and were significantly easier to do more damage to.

The Monitor's torpedo modules were specifically designed to be used in concert with the impulse modules, and the two rear-firing tubes on each module cleared the aft modules by what some would consider a worryingly close distance.
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h123/strangename19/TOS%20ships/th_IMG_3261.jpg (http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h123/strangename19/TOS%20ships/?action=view&current=IMG_3261.jpg)

The final module was designed as an effort to increase the availability of carriers for fighters in Starfleet, but was quickly adapted to fill many other roles as well. The additional shuttle bays made these modules ideal for large-scale rescue and humanitarian missions, with the ability to not only deploy a large number of shuttles very quickly, but also because the pods added a significant amount of cargo space in which to carry medical supplies, foodstuffs, etc.

Because these modules included their own power generators, impulse engines, and RCS thrusters, Starfleet officially considered them sublight vessels. Each was equipped with a command center in the middle of the pod, and these modules could be left in orbit to work on under their own power while their mother ship returned to pick up additional modules. Each included their own defensive batteries, in the event of attack.
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h123/strangename19/TOS%20ships/th_IMG_3276.jpg (http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h123/strangename19/TOS%20ships/?action=view&current=IMG_3276.jpg)

On the rare occasion of a large evacuation or natural disaster, the Monitor type could carry four of the large modules. While this did encumber the ship greatly, the massive amounts of space provided by the pods, plus the ability to launch over a hundred shuttles in less than five minutes made this configuration ideal for evacuation. Between the vessel herself, the two cargo pods and the two hangar pods, the Monitor type could transport more than 260,000 people. With all shuttles and transporters picking up evacuees, the Monitor could reach that capacity in just under three hours.

For the Monitor,I'd make the primary hull nacelle pylons centerline with the nacelles and canted forward ( /=/ ) or aft ( \=\ ) and use the "strongback" dorsal ridge on the engineering hull you use for the Hamilton class. It would look that much "beefier".

Both are looking good! I like the weapons pods.

Thanks for expanding the ST universe.

Paragon,

As a fan of the old Starfleet Battles game, I really dig your idea for the weapons pods. They are very reminiscent of the Battle Pods the game had for converting regular tugs into Battle Tugs. As for the Ptolemy Class ships being limited, the Star Fleet Technical Manual showed these tugs hauling two pods at a time, linked end to end.

Well thats interesting to know. So I guess the Monitor could probably do the same too.

Anyway, I'll release the files soon, but right now I'm a little busy working on another model of a plucked chicken.

This guy has produced a great deal of cargo pods designed for the Ptolemy. Maybe they'll work for your ships:

Did anyone else get to the end of his list? He has 11 pages of "Tool Kits" full of 3 sided views of Star Fleet ship components so you can mix and match your own bits and design your own ships.

Given that Rawen has kindly given us four pages of blank parts based on his TOS ships, this could lead to some interesting new models.
