Hello guys!

This time I will continue the build of the T40
This kit is so easy to assemble, the fit is great, few parts, nice coloring and weathering, ok instructions.
The tank is a small amhibious one.Soviet type from ww2.

Lucky as I was, I got myselves an assembly team :)
Hope you enjoy the shots, and the team will get colored very shortly!!

I have also made a small diorama for the small tank.
It's a winter dio. I sprayed a stonebrick with Christmas snow.....planted some trees ans throw some small rocks in! As you notice it's the same as for the Putilow,so This scene will not be used for the T40....

I also started the crazy work adding rivets......now I see I shouldn't have been thinking about that....Spent all day yesterday doing the rivets and I'm not half way to finish that part yet.

looking great, Johnny! Good to see your crew back in action, as they seem to have taken an extended holiday! The rivets look great, I think you have way more patience than I do, and I have a lot! This one is in my stack also, and looks great, I may have to move it up towards the top! Thanks for the update!

I should necer have started that rivetmania.....now I have added 400-500 rivets and not even close to finish that job yet....So in a couple of days I might have the rivets done.
I'm also working on the wheels and tracks....in between :)

It's a painful job at best. How did you make the rivets? What size are they?

I use the Japaneese screw punch to make the rivets. With the 1mm bit it's easy to make them. The size of the rivets are around 0,7-0,8mm. I haven't mesured them but since it's the inside of the bit I guess thats not far from the truth.

Johnny,

Do you play any music to rivet by?

Just listening to the radio.....and scratching my head with a beat when the frustration gets to me :) And maybe some humming...the rivets of babylon, the rivets and maybe rivets deep-montain high!

Johnny, you have your hands full with new models! Congratulations!!

Keeping a close eye on those little details.

Johnny
10-12-2007, 04:16 AM
Thanks Gerardo!

Speaking about details....
Headlights.
I guess I have too much time on my hands with all this vacations....
So I decided to try to enhance the headlights a bit.

First I made the body of the lights. This is a tiny part with a diameter of 6mm.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t429sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t429.jpg)

Next I made a reflector of aluminium foil
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t430sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t430.jpg)

And glued that to the "cup"
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t431sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t431.jpg)

Then I made the glass and frame
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t432sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t432.jpg)

I made a light bulb of a 1,8mm disk painted silver and hang it upside down for a bit with a drop of gloss varnish to simulate the glass part of it.It's a bit tiny so you can barely see it inside the light
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t433sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t433.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t434sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t434.jpg)

And at last I added the "leg"
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t435sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t435.jpg)

Johnny,

Your build thread is illuminating and full of riveting detail...,

Sorry, but I just had to get it out of my mind and onto the net...,

It looks like you're punching the rivets out of a copy of the surrounding surface in order to preserve the texture?

+Gil

Johnny
10-13-2007, 06:33 AM
Hello Gil!

I'm not sure what you ment in your post about the illuminate thing on your mind?
But the rivets are made of a coloring sample in the kit.
I guess it's there if you mess up a part you can make a new one out of the samlpe color piece.

Gharbad

Your cutting mat looks like a warzone Johnny!

The headlight looks really good. How did you do the initial dome shape?
Whenever I try to do those, I always end up with gaps between the wedge segments.

Johnny
10-13-2007, 01:19 PM
Making the domes is actually quite easy when you have done it a couple of times.
First I cut out the part with the flips and connect the ends to eachother. So I try to find something with almost similar shape and use that as a mold. Then I glue one and one flip to eachother bending them down over the mold and holds them there as the glue does it's job.So it's to repeat it til all flips is done.
I'm not sure if you understand what I mean here..I'm not good explaining in english.

Gharbad
10-13-2007, 02:42 PM
Ah, so you use a mold.

The only thing I didn't catch was the glueing part. Do you glue the entire edges together, or just the tips, or what?

Johnny
10-13-2007, 03:35 PM
Ok I'm not very good in explaining things LOL

But here are the "molds".The black one I used for the headlights on tne greif.I always have my eyes with me and pick up things with shapes that can come in handy when building models.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t436sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t436.jpg)
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t437sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t437.jpg)

When I have found the right shaped thing,I cut the part out.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t438sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t438.jpg)

Glue the edges together and place it over the "mold" like this
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t439sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t439.jpg)

And then it's just to bend the flips down to the right shape against the top of the "mold" And begin to glue one flip to the other one by one.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t440sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t440.jpg)

I hope this made some sence :)

Gharbad
10-13-2007, 05:05 PM
Yeah, that's what I imagined more or less, I just wasn't sure how you glue it.
Now it's kind of obvious what you do.
Thanks!

Also, I can't believe you found such a perfect shape :p

Johnny
10-14-2007, 08:43 AM
I'm always looking for things I can use in my builds. When I'm outside walking in the mountains or in the woods, there are always something small to take home....some moss, tiny branches, small stones, things that look like trees...etc etc.
And when I'm at work , my eyes usually scans here and there for things to use as tools, materials like metal rods, wire, nets strips of many kinds and things with nice round shapes in various sizes :)
There are always something to find!!

They are pretty busy at the moment......finishing the rest odf the wheels :)
But you can have them over when the T40 is done!

Hey wait a second!! Then the build of the luchs starts.....sorry mate :( But I think I need them for that build also!

Johnny

Hello!

I have started to make what will be a small winterscene.
My idea is to have the T40 standing in front of a small house.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t441sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t441.jpg)

The tank will be standing in a snow covered road with dirty/slushy tracks.Around the house there will be snowpiles and the window will be frostbiten.

http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t442sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t442.jpg)
The corrugated roof are covered with snow.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t443sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t443.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t444sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t444.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t445sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t445.jpg)
Some details.
The window will have a tiny layer of ice in the lower corners.
The edge will have snow "blown" around the corner (If I can manage to make the effect)
And the door will be grey as the rest of the house.

http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t446sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t446.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t447sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t447.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t448sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t448.jpg)

I will also make a back wall to cover the back side and maybe some interior that can be seen through the window.Typical a table and chairs.
A snow shuffle will be placed up against the wall.
This is just ideas, and my ideas have the tendency to change during the build process,so It might be something totally different....

http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t449sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t449.jpg)

I have also started to puzzle with the lasertracks.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t450sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t40/t450.jpg)
I was looking at some T40's I found on the net , and they seemed to have a sort of greyish color on the tracks. So my plan is to have the grey as a basecolor and add some mud pigments and some other dirt in the end.

The base is to narrow.....
I have to buy me another frame tomorrow, but you'll get the idea of how it will look.

The strange profile comes from that itls an amphibious vehicle I think (or guess)

The strange profile comes from that itls an amphibious vehicle I think (or guess)

I havent found a lot of background material on this one,but here is a shot.

There's quite a bit of material around on the web for the T-40:

www.jagdtiger.de (Kubinka)
http://armor.kiev.ua/Tanks/WWII/T40/ (Drawings)
http://mk-armour.narod.ru/1997/No4.htm (Images/drawings)
http://walkarounds.airforce.ru/armour/rus/t-30/index.htm
(It's a T-30 walk around but there were a lot of similar components).

Tracks from the WW2 era were normally made from high manganese steel forgings. Manganese steel usually oxidises to a dark brown colour rather than the bright orange colour of other steels. I don't think anyone bothered painting the tracks since they normally didn't last long enough to warrant any special protection.

Charlie

Added the last of the ice poles and made some trackmarks on the ground.I'm not sure if it's neccesary with more dirt and snow on the road?
I might just leave it like this. What do you think??

Adding the realism of someone having relieved themselves is a stroke of genius! I like the track marks as is, but I don't know how much dirt a tank would churn up on a snow covered road....

Johnny
11-20-2007, 07:01 AM
The trackmarks isn't from a tank, but from russian tractors.
I tried to copy the road from some pics I have from the time I was a M6 driver in the Norwegian forces. I will add wheelmarks all over the road, and not just in the tracks, but the snow has to dry out some more.
I guess marks will be more visible in the wheeltrails. And after beeing just mud,it freezes and gets covered with more snow that again freezes to -30 deg, you won't get much loose stuff in the road. The snow on the road will come off in some sort of flakes when driven on for a while.
So I will try to make it look that way in the end :)

So after I have made tracmarks all over I added the final layer with snow.

Another session with tractordriving will be done when snow has dried.

Ohhh....that's nasty and I mean that in a good way. Reminds me why I've spend my adult life in Southern California and Arizona. Brrrr!
