Kind of odd they'd put out another Spit when they've already got the Vb in production.

Rick,
This is a very special Spitfire Mk IXc. It was one of the 9 planes flown by elite group of Polish pilots from Polish Fighting Team, or as they were unofficially called - Skalski's Circus.
Not having to much fighting to do in Europe at the time, Polish Airforce asked for some volunteers willing to go to North Africa to help during the final push there. Out of the score of them, 15 were chosen and flew as Flight C of 145 Suqadron RAF of the Desert Air Force.
During two months of fighting they shot down 25 German and Italian aircraft, 3 probables and 9 damaged. They sustained only one casualty - he ended up as a POW

Thanks Mike. Do you know if this is Skalski's plane? I did an earlier model of his P.11C and would love to do his Spit. Thx

They did not have planes assigned to specific pilots since there were 15 of them and only 9 planes so pilots flew whiever plane was ready at the moment.
According to the records, those pilots scored kills on it - Horbaczewski, Sporny, Sztramko and Skalski damaged Mc 202.

Going back to the model - there are some issues with coloring of the rudder and Halinski will be issuing a correction in the next model...

According to the Halinski site the corrected version has now been released.

Also there is some debate about whether this kit is historically accurate regarding the version of the Spitfire. The discussion is at kartonbaue.de (http://www.kartonbau.de/wbb2/thread.php?postid=202358#post202358) - but it doesn't appear to be clarified whether the kit has the appropriate changes from the vB version.

Rick -- You have a point about duplication of aircraft types, but the IXc looks slightly different from the Vb due to the extended wing tips and four-bladed prop. The gun arrangement is also slightly different (the Vb had the "B" wing with one 20mm cannon and two .30 machine guns in each wing; the IXc had the "C" wing, which could take various combinations of cannon and machine guns, but appears in the Halinsky version to have one cannon and a stub in each wing, probably with two machine guns). The colors are quite different, with the new IXc in Desert middle stone/dark earth/azure with dark blue serials. The Mk.V is in the post-1941 northern European "slime and sewage" scheme of dark green/ocean grey/medium sea grey with light grey serials, sky fuselage band and spinner, and yellow wing leading edges. So, from one perspective, they are very similar, but visually, they would look quite different side-by-side on the shelf. Don B.

I think this is the same subject as NOBI's Spitfire IX (free download).
I built NOBI's and did some research about it. It seems correct about the Skalki's Circus.

The insignia are from the Polish Fighter Corps, 1943. "ZX" was the code name for 145 sq.
