Hello!!

Time to start a new model :)
This time I will try to build the PzKpfw II Luchs from Wak.

http://www.papirmodeller.com/kits/luchs/luchs1sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/kits/luchs/luchs1.jpg)

The main frame was to be built of lasercuts....

First the drawing
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs2sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs2.jpg)

Parts for the frame
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs3sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luch3.jpg)

When I had assembled the frame I noticed something was wrong......I had done the most stupid error you can do.I had assumed both sides of the frame was equal. They were NOT!!!! So with a massive punch from my fist the laserparts hit the dust.....
I then had to make the frame the old fashioned way.....yes thats right,by cutting new parts :)

So here is what I have done so far.....
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs4sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luch4.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs5sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luch5.jpg)

http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs6sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luch6.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs7sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luch7.jpg)

Next will be to add some smaller pieces on the frame and make the air vents at the rear end.

You gotta watch the temper with the smashing things... you can recover parts at least some of the time!

There's something wrong with your links by the way.

No rest for... Johnny!!!

Speed sometimes makes you go the wrong way, but I'm confident you can manage that little error. Congrats!

I don't seem to be able to edit my post....but there is an "s" missing in the link...it says luch5.jpg instead of luchs5.jpg :)

I tried to recover some parts and I managed to rescue the bottom part and the rear one....

Good to know that even the masters make mistakes ;)

Looks like you're still off to a good start.

Johnny

Oh yes I make mistakes all the time....so I'm far far away from to be called master!! I guess my builds are quite average. And with well designed models, you can't go wrong! Such as the Pak40 from Draf and the ChiHa from ModelHobby.

Johnny, you're much too modest. We all think you are a master of armor and vehicles!

I think you're much too hard on yourself Johnny - I checked the model and the difference between the sides is quite small - it's about 2-3 mm on the upper front part of the hull. The original has the matching part numbers noted on the edge of the frame parts which helps avoid this sort of problem - I guess the laser cut parts don't have this.

Charlie

Nice start, Johnny! Guess I had better fire up my Luchs if I want to keep up... But I am so close to finishing the Grant.....

Johnny

Yes keep on finishing the Grant Chris!!

The air vents.

The air vents are placed on the rear side of the tank and is built up by several parts.
The drawing shows what to do.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs8sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs8.jpg)

Here I have cutted out the parts for the #13
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs9sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs9.jpg)

The assembly is straight forward. All parts fit fine.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs10sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs10.jpg)

I bought some mesh from RaiRo since I have not been quite happy with the Gaz bandage I have used earlier.

And with the mesh installed the top frame is lookig quite nice :)
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs11sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs11.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs12sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs12.jpg)

And the air vents installed into their proper holes.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs13sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs13.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs14sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs14.jpg)

Note!
Nothing is glued in place yet! I'll wait with that until I have the top skin in place, just to be sure everything fits!

Johnny
11-02-2007, 02:42 PM
Putting on the skin was pretty much straight forward gluing. Some minor glitches was discovered in the kit,so a little trimming here and there was to be done.
First the hull.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs15sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs15.jpg)

Then the upper skin.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs16sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs16.jpg)

Since the side "windows" will be in open position,I had to make the inner part.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs17sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs17.jpg)

The turret
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs18sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs18.jpg)

All skins in place.

The rear airvent.

The internal frames

The mesh and top frame

All 3 vents in place

Exactly what kind of mesh is it?

Johnny

It's a plastic mesh I bought from RaiRo.de
I had to do something about it since I wasn't happy with the gaz bandage I used earlier :)

The Pz IIC is an early armour model from Halinski. It doesn't have an interior except for the turret guns. Jim Nunn has recommended this model as a first Halinski armour model before tackling the more complex ones like the Tiger or Panther.

It does too have an interior - some formers and glue, does that count? ;) Lots and lots of pieces but all seems pretty straight forward. I think it will be an enjoyable (though slow) build.

Johnny

I'm getting the same feeling Chris!!
If I can manage to get the rest of the build to look the same way as the parts I have done,I'm pretty sure it will be a great model. And with over 2700 parts....it has a lot of nice details!
But....and there is a but here.I think the quality of the parts fit isn't as good as I expected.I constantly have to trim parts to have them fit,and compared to the Chi-ha where I didn't trim a single part,I'm a bit disappointed. Not disappointed as in disappointed but almost :)
I also find a lot of "strange" ways of doing things, but I guess the designers do things differently. So I spend some time converting things to "my way" of making the parts. Not a big deal honestly spoken,I really enjoy this build!!
And it's ment for the more experienced builder, and there is my lack.....
But I will be picking on and on to get this one finished.

Hey! now I sound very negative....I'm not :)
This is really a great kit!!

Your observed problems seem to be common to WAK models - I ran into much the same issues with the Pz 1F.

The sometimes strange way the parts go together seems to me to be the way the software was used to design the models.

Hello!

I have started to make the wheel cionnectors and the suspension.
First I noticed there was something wrong with the parts 64....I could not make the part fit the way it was.So I had to do some investigation, and luckily I found some shots of the real luchs that showed the part.I found out that the part missed some scorelines and the instructions are really BAD on this point and doesn't show the part in it's final shape at all.

Here I have placed the scorelines there they are supposed to be.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs46sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs46.jpg)

The scoreline should be as wide from the scoreline that shows as the part 64B is.When that problem was solved it was no problem to continue.

http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs51sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs51.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs50sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs50.jpg)

That was one damper.....3 to go :)

I also made a small hatch on the rear.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs47sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs47.jpg)

Now I'm off work for 3 weeks......so I will continue the Luchs when I return :)

I can't seem to find the site.

Do you know what it's used for exactly, or is it for models?

If you have a craft shop or shop nearby that sells 'dress making' products. There is ribbon or lace material (used for wedding dress or prom dress making) that has a very small weave that approximates scaled grillwork.

I got the idea from a modeling magazine.

Gharbad

CharlieC

The material you want is called "tulle".

Unfortunately many tulles have a hexagon pattern rather than a square mesh pattern. Another possibility are the fine mesh bags that herbs like garlic are sold in supermarkets.

Some small parts on the sides

These are the plates covering the ends of the torsion bars which run across the bottom of the hull. I think it allowed the torsion bar to be released from outside the hull rather than the internal torsion bar locators on the larger Tiger and Panther. (Just in case you wanted to know what they are in the real thing).

Back in the saddle again....All theese vacations......

Some progress on the wheels and I made one of the drivewheels.
I'll come back to the construction of the drivewheel another day if there are some interest to see the construction.

Here are the pics.
As you can see I added a lot of nuts to the hub and the rim.I have not decided yet if I put nuts onto the "unvisible" sides yet....

Today I finished the roadwheels.

I had 3 more swingarms to make on the left side.I have reinforced the hollow tube construction with a 3mm wooden rod to be sure they can stand the handeling without breaking.....

I also made a part.....
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs91sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs91.jpg)

I dont know what this part is, but it belongs to the rear part of the right mudguard.I guess it's some kind of tool, maybe a donkraft or something.

I like that idea! I could have it on the side of the road in a seedy section of NYC - it only takes about 30 minutes to get a vehicle stripped there!

Disclaimer - I <heart> NYC. I base my comments only on some of the hulks I have seen at the side of the road when passing through.

Johnny -- You have a magical touch with those small and repetitive parts. I still harbor a suspicion that much of the detailed work is being secretly done by your 1/24th crew of mechanics -- after all, you do live in a land of magical trolls.

It's the fire extinguisher - standard item on most Wehrmacht tanks. I think it was intended to deal with small fires resulting from fuel spills and engine fires.

The wheels came out really nice. How did you attach the swingarms? Are they just glued on, or did you add some sort of axle-like support?

Edit: I guess looking back the answer is merely glued on :o

I think that's an effect of the short hull - the Luchs was 4.63m long and 2.2m high. Johnny's model hasn't got the idlers installed yet - they give the effect of stretching the appearance of the model. In reality the whole project of trying to turn obsolete Pz I and II designs into useful vehicles was a waste of time and resources. Fortunately for the Allies in WW2 the Germans had great engineers and useless management. The upside is that it gives us lots of model subjects many years later.

Yeah those missing wheels really do change the look.
On another note, does the 4.63m imply they had their tolerances down to the centimeter?

I don't know about the Luchs but the Panthers were dimensionally pretty accurate - they had to be because once the hull was built it was loaded into a multihead boring machine to cut out the ports for the torsion bars.

The rear wheels was a bit complicated construction containing a lot of parts.
And since I know you all loves wheels, just as me!! I made a step by step report....

First lets take a look at the drawing.Ans as we can see it's a lot of parts involved.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs96sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs96.jpg)

First step was to make the rear side.It was made of a 0,5mm bottom plate,a center hub, and two coned pieces coned each way.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs97sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs97.jpg)
The triangles was glued to the lower cone and the hub.

Then I made the cone for the front side arrangement
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs98sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs98.jpg)

Then I added the ring with the nuts to the rear side.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs99sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs99.jpg)

The cone was glued to the front side
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs100sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs100.jpg)

And the nuts was added to the rear side
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs101sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs101.jpg)

So came the time to add the supporters for the outer ring on the front side
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs102sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs102.jpg)

All 6 supporters added
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs103sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs103.jpg)

Then I had to put on the paperstrip and the ring to hold the coned front part in place
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs104sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs104.jpg)

Johnny

The outer part was added to get the distance from the rear ring correct for the dimesnsion on the outer coned part.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs105sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs105.jpg)

The coned outer ring is in place
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs106sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs106.jpg)

A lot of tiny triangles was to be added to the outer coned sides
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs107sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs107.jpg)

And when all triangles and nuts are added we have a wheel
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs108sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs108.jpg)

I painted the part that will be in contact with the tracks with "polished steel" paint
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs109sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/luchs/luchs109.jpg)

The wheels put loosely on for an impression of how it will look.

It's the trolls, Gerardo. The only explanation is that the team of 1/24th scale mechanics comes in at night and goes to work.

Johnny
02-05-2008, 10:21 AM
LOL I guess I have to explain......

The tank I'm building at work :)
I think it's great to be payed when I build....
In my job I'm all alone.I have my own building with all facilities as workshop, shower,a small kitchen with fridge, micro coffemachine etc etc.
I also have my own office where I can relax in a recliner and I have a couple of puters there. One with the control system of the factory, and one puter that is on the global network :)
During weekends and nightshifts it's usually more quiet around....not mant things that breaks down and fewer people that needs my help.So I have a lot of "free time" usually to build models.

At home I build when I'm alone.....as you know I also have a lot of time off work,so when kids are at school and wife at work....IT'S MANTIME :)
Then I make some coffee and moves out in my shed for some hours.

I've given the problem of painting tracks a bit of thought.....

It's worthwhile to look at how tracks are made and used to get some sort of handle on their appearance in service.

Track elements were usually made from forged Manganese steel in WW2 (except for the US which mostly used rubber block skeleton tracks). The Germans ran short of Manganese towards the end of WW2 and used some tracks made from Nickel Steel castings. Both of these steels don't have "red" rust but oxidise to a dark brown colour - especially the Mn steels.

After machining and assembly the tracks would probably be coated in some sort of preservative (grease).

Tracks didn't last very long in service - the track life would depend on the operating environment (sand was very abrasive) and the loading of the tracks (speed and vehicle weight). I haven't found any figures on track life but tank crews had to check and adjust tracks every day. I'd guess if a steel element track lasted more than 1000 miles (1500 km) it was doing pretty well.

Given the relatively short life of AFVs in active service and the fairly regular changeout of tracks I'd be surprised if the tracks rusted extensively except in tropical environments. It seems to me that the colour of tracks was mostly the colour of the soil the tracks have been operating over.

Examining tracks on tracked construction vehicles which use steel element tracks seems to validate this view. I'd note the grousers are mostly always worn to bright steel in these tracks.

Regards,

Charlie

Just an idea to represent worn metal on tracks. I've used very soft pencil (8B)
to represent metal. Seems to be reasonably convincing and is easy to do.
I picked up a range of soft pencils at my local art supply shop.

The example is some roadwheels from a T-34 with steel roadwheels.

Well here you are :)
Since I didn't bring my tools with me at work today I did some work on the small diorama for the Luchs.
This is roughly how it's going to end up when it's done.

I will call the scene a peaceful vacation from the battles....

Also, where'd you get those bricks??

Johnny

I got the bricks from PlusModel.
I'm not sure what litterature the soldiers had, so I thought that was a funny idea!
Now I only have to get some sand from Sahara......

Johnny,

Your high skill level and WAK’s very fine model equals another excellent model.

One question is the gun tube turned metal?

Hello Jim!

The main gun is made of brass.Painted with gun metal and polished with a soft cloth.

Johnny, the tank is superb, my friend. It seems a really great model.

And gosh, you took your time on it, right?

Johnny
06-05-2008, 01:00 AM
Yes I take my time :)
I build as it suits me, without a deadline.....I have no rush finishing a model since I just build for fun and not competitions :)

My plan is to have the last tracks done by friday, and have the scene finished on saturday if it,s quiet at work.

Then I will start on the LeFh cannon from Draf.

Full schedule!

I´m still afraid to build more than one model. But I have a friend who does that, and he's 84 years old! I have a lot to learn.

Keep it up, then, Johnny!

Johnny

Yes full schedule and some lazyness.....I hope it's because of the summer heat :)

I finished up the small scene where the Luchs is to be placed.

A beautiful tank and a nice little humorous diorama, Johnny.

Johnny

Thanks Don!

A bit of humour never hurts eh :)
The scene will be a quiet one.....like relaxing between the battles reading Gröfas's book and some other guys doing some maintenance on the tank.

I did some research for the Africa corps uniforms and the most common seems to be the Olive drab type.I'm not sure if I got that right.....
But after I read the book of Rommels panzer chief about the Africa corps it seems to be that almost anything was ok as uniforms.

I finished the last tracklinks this afternoon, and I'll mount it and do the last touchups tomorrow.

So there was the day I finished the Luchs!!

This is a nearly 100% kit from WAK.I don't think I had to trim a single part to get it to fit.So my hats off to the constructor!!

I have had a great time building this one and making the small desert scene.
It's taking it's time, but I'm not in a rush to get my models done .
So here comes the pics of the finished model.I have called the scene "Timeout" where the crew relaxing and doing some maintenance on the tank between the desert battles against the british troops.I have also but some humour into the scene if you look closely....

Dear Johnny
I remain astonished by the amount of detail included on the model and all small.
Is truly remarkable what can be done with the paper.
This leads me to imitate. :o
Thank you for sharing.

very cool Johnny! Just another super build and display. (I don't know much about tank models does the track get glued in place or can it rotate?)

Johnny
06-10-2008, 10:08 AM
Hi Glen!
The tracks are glued to eachother and are individually movable links, but the drivewheels are glued,so nothing really can rotate.
But If I'm not mistaken the new T28 from Draf have rotating wheels and tracks.

Astounding build Johnny, I'm truly amazed! I really like the diorama - in my opinion, a well done diorama transcends the boundry between "I built a model" to "I've just created a story and a piece of art".
