Hello,
I would like to start new building report. The subject of it is Imperial Japanese Navy's first amphibious tank Type 2 Ka-Mi. Model of this tank was published in Maly Modelarz several years ago. My colleagues ask me to design model of this tank and I decided to do that especially that I very like it. I don't want to describe the vehicle in details - you can read about it here: Type 2 Ka-Mi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_2_Ka-Mi) and here: Type 2 Ka-Mi*Amphibious Tank - History, Specifications and Picture - Military Tanks, Vehicles, and Artillery (http://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/detail.asp?armor_id=287).
As a base for this model mainly I used drawings and pictures from Japonska bron pancerna. Vol. 2. - AJ Press book. Based on these drawings I draw this tank in 3D in scale 1:25. My Idea is to make 2D parts, made the model and if it will be possible publish the model.
I would like to built the following tank:

Great looking design. I look forward to following your build. Is the Type 94 Te-Ke available somewhere? It is a great looking design also.

While not my favorite design, it is a Japanese tank and I'm looking forward to add it to my collection. Great job.

I'm not much of a tank guy, either (King of battle). However, the Japanese actually had some pretty intereting tanks during WWII.
I look forward to this build.

Hello,

I made already body and wheels for my model but I would like to show you how I'm building Ka-Mi from the begging.

First, I'm going to build tank, next water protections and finally pontoons. So, lets start to build the tank:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th___30.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/__30.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th___32.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/__32.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th___34.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/__34.jpg)

I glued all frame parts to 1mm board and I cut all parts. I connected first few elements together and I installed all axises for wheels:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2820.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2820.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2821.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2821.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2822.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2822.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2823.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2823.jpg)

I was thinking how and when to install hooks / brackets for pontoons. I decided to glue them now, to frame parts before I attach the parts to the frame. If I cut and glue all parts precisely everything should fit together well. The main issue is how far the hooks should be jut above the model body. Any way, I connected all frame parts together and I got the following:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2824.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2824.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2825.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2825.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2826.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2826.jpg)

Next I glue hull parts and I have ready the body:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2830.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2830.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2831.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2831.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2832.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2832.jpg)

Next pictures I'll add tomorrow.

Back to Type 94 Te-Ke. It was published by WAK publisher in 2008 (Galeria modelu (http://www.wak.pl/index.php?module=galleries&page=gallery&id=58)). It was my first published model. My colleague, Struna, presented this model already here: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/gallery-announcements/4374-type-94-te-ke-wak-struna.html. Another copy of it you can see here: modelarstwo kartonowe, plastikowe ... :: Zobacz temat - Type 94 Te-Ke by Z?O Squad (http://www.kartonwork.pl/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13360&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0).

I am exceptionally pleased (totally gaga) at the appearance of another WWII Japanese armored vehicle. And an amphibian! You have clearly done some excellent research and you are turning out a very accurate and realistic model.

Hello,

Thanks for nice words which gives me motivation to continue work on that model.

In the next step I started to make wickets. Some small parts :) Next I added hatches, wickets, handles, rivets and air intake. Still a few small parts are missing but I’ll add them when the tank will stay on own wheels.

I started making main and rear wheels. All of them are almost the same so I’ll work on them at the same time. To make them more attractive I decided to add some small elements like bolt protections (similar to “8” wires) and bolts (0.8mm paper disk). I’m not sure if these details are visible now but I’m sure will be after painting.

Hello,

Some of my posts disappeared during last forum malfunction so I'll add them from my archive log.

I finished all wheels. Most time I spent making "bolt protection" on wheels:

Hello,

I started build turret. Is is almost ready but still main gun, machine gun and a few small elements are missing. I'll made them later. Turret from my project:

Hi,

Small update. I made missing "windows" and I added it to turret water protector:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2899.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2899.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2900.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2900.jpg)

I made also rear water protector:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2901.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2901.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2902.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2902.jpg)

And a few pictures showing current status of the model:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2903.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2903.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2904.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2904.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2906.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2906.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2907.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2907.jpg)

Missing rivets I'll add when I'll work on pontoons.

Thanks for taking the trouble to repost the photos. They are well worth detailed study. I have learned a lot about this tank since you began this excellent thread.

Although I am Japanese, I am completely uninterested in Japanese tank for more than 50 years but your presentation sparks my interest.
How nice!

This continues to be an oustanding build.

As I have said before, one of the reasons I am enjoying it is because I am learning so much about the actual tank that you are modeling.

And, of course, it is always a pleasure to see such a very high level of craftsmanship.

Don

Thanks Don.
I'm not in 100% sure if everything I made is like in original vehicle because there is not too much materials (drawings and pictures) available. I don't have access to the tank. Any way, I'm trying to make as best as I can. For final release, paper magazine, I have to simplify a few elements (whiles, silencer) because there are too difficult to make for many people - my "beta tester" sad that.

Maybe your kit could contain both the simple version of these parts and also the more advanced version? It looks so good!

I agree with Chris; having the option to build it as you designed it or with simplified parts is a good idea.

The model may not be 100% accurate but it is very good.

This is amazing! I like the option of building the model with or without certain elements.

Hello,

I started painting my model. As a first layer I applied gray primer.

Hello,

When primer dry I applied next layer, basic color (Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue). When this layer dry as well I applied mixed XF-18 and white paints on all flat surfaces. Button part of the model I cover mixed XF-18 and black paints. Now everything dry. I take photos when I make next two steps, dry-brushing and wash.
Meantime I started work on tracks. I have ready first two single tracks. 216 left.

The single tracks looks as follow:

Welcome back.

Last weeks I spent making tracks. I finished. I made 200 single tracks but finally I used "only" 194. I started cutting holes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2856-1.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2856-1.jpg)

Next, I cut and formed single tracks, glue booth sides and track profile:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2996.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2996.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2997.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2997.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_3011.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_3011.jpg)

Next I cut holes using small tools what I made from nails. I made rest of track's elements but I connect only combs to the tracks.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_3015.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_3015.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_3016.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_3016.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_3017.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_3017.jpg)

The single tracks I connect to a box using Scotch tape and I painted one side of them using ModelMaster Gun Metal paint. When paint dried I removed the tracks and connect track's tooth. I connected again the tracks to the box and painted the second side of them.

Michal, Beautiful! Don't change anything!
You could make simpler wheels and tracks as an option
if you would like, but my p.....c armor friends would
think these are Modelkasten metal aftermarket parts.

Hi,

Small update from my last night work. I finished the tracks off. At the beginning I put the blend of pigments and I strengthened those fixers to pigments. When pigments dried the color changed, a nice color of dark rust came out. From the side of wheels with pencil I wiped the track which wheels are leaving behind. From the other side I wiped combs with steel paint (dry brush):

Now tracks are waiting for the final assembly.

Look at all those bolts/rivets. What wonderful detail and the build quality is just superb. Thank you so very much for the wonderful pictures. Please put up as many pictures as you like of this fine model, I will never get tired of looking at them. How on earth did you get the welds to look like welds? Very nice indeed.

Thanks for sharing.

Welcome back.

Last weeks I spent making tracks. I finished. I made 200 single tracks but finally I used "only" 194. I started cutting holes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2856-1.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2856-1.jpg)

Next, I cut and formed single tracks, glue booth sides and track profile:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2996.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2996.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_2997.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_2997.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/th_IMG_3011.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/mrafalsk/Ka-Mi%20Type%202/IMG_3011.jpg)

Next I cut holes using small tools what I made from nails. I made rest of track's elements but I connect only combs to the tracks.

The single tracks I connect to a box using Scotch tape and I painted one side of them using ModelMaster Gun Metal paint. When paint dried I removed the tracks and connect track's tooth. I connected again the tracks to the box and painted the second side of them.

Half way through cutting all these holes I think I would have gone mad. Or just got drunk. You are a very patient man my friend.

Cheers

"I'm happy with results" you say! HA! I would over the moon if I could accomplish a work of half this quality. This is one very fantastic model and I congratulate you on a magnificent job. Simply beautiful!

That is a superb model. I very much enjoyed watching you build it and learning about the techniques that you used. This is a magnificent addition to the armory of WWII Japanese armored fighting vehicles and amphibious vehicles.

Hi,

Thanks. I'm happy that you like my model. Please believe me, it is not perfect. I see a few elements what I should improve next time. One of them is painting. It looks well and I'm happy with results but... I tried to achieve some effects but I couldn't. I need more practice and tests.

@Jim (Bagpiper): You are asking about welds. In this case I used regular silk thread which I glue to surfaces using white glue. Tracks for Ka-Mi is simple one. Single track contains only 4 parts and has only a few holes. Similar track for King Tiger made by one of my colleague contains 34 elements!!!

@Cjwalas: Yes, I'm happy. Happy because I build new model almost with quality what I wanted.

@Don Boose: Most of people builds German and Russian tanks. Where are Japanese, French or American tanks? I would like to change that. So far I made two Japanese tanks and I'm going to build at least one more, maybe two. I'm also thinking about one famous French tank.

Michal,

I am now sorry that I wasn't following your design and build thread till now. I like the way you realized the model by taking it from an imagined thing, the CAD design process through to an expertly built concrete realization. Truly a gold ribbon thread and thank you for your time, dedication and work...

Michal, do you know if there will be some laser-cut pieces for your model, especially the the tracks?

Outstanding work! Could you tell me how you cut the wheels so consistently?

@Chris: I don't have confirmation but seems to be it is a standard now that publishers also provide laser cut elements. I'm sure that same will be in this case.
@rmks2000: To cut the wheels I'm using this circle cutter: Welcome to Olfa (http://www.olfa.com/CircleCuttersDetail.aspx?C=15&Id=65)
