Guess what Santa may be bringing this year? If we are lucky, a brand new Merlin engine for the Halinski MkV Spitfire!

These glad tidings come from Alin Osarik, designer of the free download DB601 engine (see this thread (http://www.kartonbau.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=14253)). In a letter to me Alin says he is 90 percent finished with this long-awaited project, and estimates another 5-10 days, until we can have it here at Kartonbau.de!

How's that for a Christmas present, Martin ("Sparrowhawk")?

Attached you will find the two images Alin has sent me, plus what I imagine is a proper bulkhead conversion for the Halinski kit. We will soon find out more.

Meanwhile, please do Alin the honour of visiting his own website at http://www.amod.estranky.cz/ (http://www.amod.estranky.cz/) . You may catch quite a liking to his 1/200 scale LZ-129 Hindenburg, or his 1:200 Hood framework, or his T35 tank, all for free and with beautiful 3D illustrations.

Of course this is coming as I am planning that model as my next build. I think I'll probably not try to kit-bash my first Halinski build though.

I also have the Vb in the pipeline. Right now I'm waiting for some laserframes and canopy for it.

This one is going to be hard to wait for....and long needed. Now if someone would do an Allison.....

I've got the canopy, and I plan on laminating and cutting the frames myself. I'm forcing myself to finish the last little bits of the BF109 so I don't have leave it unfinished - but with the whole weekend off I imagine I'll probably end up at least laminating the frames this weekend.

As far as needing the Allison - I'm hoping that given that there are now 2 DB601's (the Rafal Ciesielski one that comes in the BF109T as well as the ME109W and the one by the designer above), the DB603 (again from Rafal, comes in the Gremir ME329) and now this Merlin - that we are going to see the major WW2 piston engine options coming in the next year or so. (Crossing my fingers).
It also leads me to the idea of building a bunch of them up (at either 1/33 or upscaled to 1/16th) and putting them on a board to hang on a wall. I think if you got 5 or 6 of them you could come up with a pretty cool display just of the engines...

Hmmm....the little grey cells, having received their turkey infusion, seem to remember that one of the Kartonowy Fan issues had an "add on" detail package for the P-39, including an Allison engine...although I think it was pretty rundimentary, just enough to give the illusion of detail through the open access panel. I'm going to have to do a little research through the back issues, once I locate the box they got chucked into. It would be nice if there were a reference index somewhere for what model kits contain goodies useful for kitbashing (engines, weapons, etc.). Even more of a wish....how about someone doing a series of 1/4 scale aircraft engines as stand alone models. Good Golly, Miss Molly....now that is an idea!

Mmmm... Merlin = Meteor tank engine - might be a nice addition to a Cromwell or Comet model.

It's being hosted at Kartonbau.de as well, to avoid all the nasty popups at the other hosting site.

You are going into our download section right? Just making sure....there are a total of four engines by the same author available for download.

Did you try this one? PaperModelers.com - Downloads - Alin Osarik's Rolls Royce Merlin engine 1:33 scale (http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/downloads.php?do=file&id=1517)

It works, I just tried it right now. When you click the blue download button: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/images/buttons/download.gif
It will open directly into a PDF. Give it some time to download, its just over 9MB.

You can also Right Click and Save As.

I built Alin's beautiful Merlin 45 kit in 1/16.5 scale a few years ago. It was displayed in the EAA Museum in Oshkosh for a few years. Now it's back on my shelf.

It was challenge in large scale. My hat is off to anyone who can build it in 1/33. I enlarged it and built it according to the directions--no additions or superdetailing. I don't know how many hours I spent on it; I quit counting at about 80.

The main engine mounts are plastic rod. Wiring and tubing is brass and aluminum wire. everything else is paper. The black base measures 5x7 inches.

Someday, I'll build a 1/16.5-scale Spitfire cockpit to hang it on.

A few years ago, I built one in 1/24 plus enlarged a Halinski Spitfire to put it in. Worked great. Parts fit well, and makes an attractive display. Like David, I would admire anyone who can build this in 1/33!

Paperguy, I believe you've got to make a modest amount of meaningful (or not) posts (replies, comments, talking to others) on the site before you automatically are granted access to the downloads.

Or so I've come to understand it. Just noticed you only have two postings...

Welcome! - Leif
