I plan on doing Galland's version of the 109 with some minor improvements;
Cockpit interior, clear canopy, landing gear and whatever else I find along the way.

Great choice! This is one I have been meaning to get to for some time. I shall be taking notes for the future!

Yeah, great choice.
I like when you can build versions that actually flew and were specific to a pilot.

The morning's work;
Fuselage and tail together. Wing together, but not glued in place yet;
39501
Main wing glued in place. I did have a bit of trouble fitting the rear edge of the main wing to the fuselage. What would normally be a fairing at the joint is a section of the fuselage that is to be flared out to act as the fairing. This didn't seem wide enough to fit the wing. This may have been my fault, but the front fit perfectly. Just something to watch for. Then I sized up the canopy and there's a bit of the fuselage section that needs to be cut away (marked here in green);
39502
I'm doing an interior, but it'll just be a simple scratch-build. I just eyeballed a basic form;
39503
Cut it out and trimmed to fit;
39504
Now to figure out what I'm going to put in there! That's about it for now.
More tonight if I can!

Looks good, Chris! Lots of work for a morning.

The FG 109's build up very nice. I love how well the fuselage shapes. Captures that 109 look - beautiful lines.

Mighty nice "eyeballing" on the cockpit.

That's several days work for me. I don't know how you guys get so much done so quickly.

That is quick. That much would take me a whole weekend.
Great job!

Very interesting, and of of my favorites liverys of Me-109E, follow this build...

Couple more hours work.
I did the exhaust pipes as individual pieces;
39583
I think little details help a lot.
Got the spinner and props together. After I completed it, I decided to push the front in for that little concave bit 109's have for the 20 mm cannon. Still need to trim down the barrel;
39584
Rolled landing gear struts and made cardboard layered wheels;
39585
Not sure how much more I'll get done tonight, but it's nice to keep moving forward on this one.

Your ME 109 is really taking shape... I can't wait to see what you do with the cockpit. Keep it up.

I eye-balled the rest of the interior, such as it is. I just want something to look like there's a level of detail in there as it's going to be displayed near the ceiling with the interior out of view;
39669
Main landing gear and props in place;
3967039671
I meant to build the recess gun wells up front, but , well, I forgot, ok?
So I merely pressed the backs down enough to get some rolled paper, I mean MG 131 machine guns, in place;
39672

Just have the canopy, antenna, and... hmm, that might be all that's left to do? Oh, rear wheel!

Just finished this one up. Fun model! The antenna wire is a bit funky in these photos, slightly fixed now.

That is a fine looking airplane. I think the bf-109 is one of thier best models, and your embelishments really add to it. What did you make the canopy out of?

Nice photography too.

What's your next one?

Great job! I like adding interiors too, but I steal them from other models. Your scratch build one came out really good!

Thanks, guys! The clear plastic for the canopy came from a teabag wrapper. I enjoy scratchbuilding the interiors, even if they do suffer from that hand drawn look.
Next up will be a couple of airacobras, one stock and one with interior, etc. Hopefully I'll get some time this weekend!

Very nice job! Looks very well finished, with excellent fitting and the hand-drawn cockpit fits with the FG style anyways ;)

Best regards,

Chris, nice work on that 109!

Could you please tell me how you did the wings? Or rather, how to get the dihedral in them? The instructions aren't much help...

cjwalas

I'll see if I can remember. I glued the wings (top and bottom) together first. Then the center section glues together; it folds over like the wings. There are markings on the wings bases where it says "glue area". These get glued either under or over (can't remember!) the center section to create the dihedral. It may help to very gently score the bottom half of the wing where the folds will be. I didn't do this and like a lot of FG models, it took a little guesswork to get the dihedral even.
Hope this helps. Maybe others have better ways to do this?

Thanks, that did help (a bit), but what about the dehedral of the MiG-3? That one has a dihedral that starts midwing, instead of at the wingroot?

cjwalas

Can't help you there, sorry. I don't have that particular model yet.

Chris your me-109 looks very nice. The cockpit adds a lot to the model. Thanks for the tips.

Legion you have to cut the upper surface of the wing and gluing it slightly under the central section. You've a indication about that in the wing page of the model.
In that way I build my mig-3:

Sorry Chris for hijack your thread.

You did a great job on this 109 Chris :). What's the fuselage length and wingspan please?

cjwalas
03-29-2010, 12:58 PM
The fuselage is roughly 9" and the wingspan is just under 10". That's not exact, but pretty close.
