Hey that looks pretty good. I saw the NLOS on "Future Weapons" a while back. Your model looks pretty darn close to the digital models and the testing rig on the show.

Let me see what I can get you as I'm here at the HQ of Field Artillery.

The NLOS-Cannon was actually cancelled...political and money reasons, of course.

I bet it was pressure from the artillery ammunition producers, as the NLOS is far more efficient than regular artillery...

The story of SPHs (self-propelled howitzers) in the US has been a sad one. The replacement for the M109 (1960s vintage) was supposed to have been the XM2001 Crusader. This was canceled in 2002 because of the high unit cost and system problems. The NLOS-C was supposed to fill the same role with a light air transportable chassis (now canceled). The US Army is still using the M109 Paladin, which although still effective, doesn't compare well to the more modern German PzH2000.

Most modern artillery systems are highly accurate and require fewer rounds to destroy a target than previous generation guns. The concentration of fire is quite amazing - the PzH2000 can land 5 rounds simultaneously at ranges up to 40km.

Charlie

I just wonder why you couldn't transplant a Pz2000 turret onto a M1 chassis? IIRC, the Pz2000 is on a Leopard Chassis so the M1 should be more than able to take the load...

The PzH2000 uses Leopard components but isn't a Leopard hull with a different turret, the engine and transmission are in different locations compared to the tank. The weight of an M1A1/PzH2000 turret would be pretty large - probably in the 70 ton range compared to the 55t of the PzH2000. The hull protection of the M1A1 would really be overkill - it's unlikely an SPH is going to get into direct fire engagements with armour.

The Australian Army has been evaluating the PzH2000 (and the AS90) as the mobile arm of the artillery. It's a seriously impressive vehicle.

Charlie

I think the Aussies have gone for the Pz2000 - maybe the US will do the same...?

That is looking great thus far. I believe the 3-D samples you had are good. What I was looking for here at Ft. Sill is a model (1/6 scale or something like that...it is quite large) that has a lot of the detail bits on it. Turns out it wasn't where it is suppose to be and nobody seems to know where it went to. I have a couple of other places to look. If I can find it or its sister I'll send you the photos...add ons to your kit.

As an artilleryman I'm really looking forward to this one!

Tekzo, If you don't mind making an "update" to the kit at some point I'm still looking for that huge model we have here at Fort Sill. I just need to find who took it home. I have another place to look, I just need to get ahold of the folks who work in that area to get permission to enter. I'll keep looking. There are some bits that you might find interesting.
