McHale got me started...
but it was an idea I have had for quite some time.
Ever since I designed my mini "Hot Wheels Juice Machine"
I have thought about building some small Hot Wheels Sizzlers.
http://cutandfold.info/assets/images/Juice_Machine_Model_1.jpg

And then of course I have thought about other Hot Wheels and diecast cars that I loved when I was a kid!

Mike's (mchale) Scooby Doo Van got me started...

and now I have started a list of other favorite "Custom" Cars, Movie and TV vehicles and Hot Wheels diecast, that I want to try in card form!

So the new collection is "AirDave's "HOT" Wheels Collection.
These will be fairly simple, but small, around 1/60 scale, vehicles
that will be shared, for free, through my site.

http://cutandfold.info/assets/images/hot_wheels_banner_sm1.jpg

First three models are up, and the download links are there too.
just click on the model page to get the download link.

The Scooby Van and the new "Shaggy" Van are the first two "HOT" Wheels!

http://cutandfold.info/assets/images/mystery_machine1.jpg http://cutandfold.info/assets/images/shaggy_van_built.jpg

and I just finished work on the Deora.
I always loved this truck!! One of the greatest show vehicles ever!
I saw it way back in 1968!
and it was also the very first Hot Wheels car I owned, back in 1968!!

http://cutandfold.info/assets/images/deora_test_build.jpg

on the drawing board next?

hmmmmm
first, I'm working on the very first "Hot Wheels Sizzler" I owned!

and I have also got a couple of TV/Movie cars in my mind.

I vote for this.

http://www.southtexasdiecast.com/hwguide/images/hwc/85511.jpg

It was one of the first completely custom hot wheels models (not modeled after a real car), was upscaled to 1:24 in the Legends series, then in 2001, Mattel actually had a fully working real car built. And now 9 years later... the paper model, a'la Dave! ;)

anything that goes into the "HOT" Wheels page will be a free download.

as I said, the Scooby Van, Shaggy Van and Deora are already up,
just click the model pages to get the download PDF.

I am almost ready for a test build of my "Sizzler"...
its got a pretty tricky canopy that I have to simplify.
But hopefully that will be up soon...

and I am looking at a few more favorite Hot Wheels,
a version (or two) of the Batmobile,
the Munsters vehicles,
and who knows what else!

These aren't very complicated models...simple stuff.
The Deora doesn't even have full wheels.
Its more about the look for me...
but I think they will still be fun, one night builds!

Completely awesome!

airdave
05-05-2010, 04:23 PM
nope...sorry...never was a fan of Twin Mill.
I do like the fact that a real car was built, one that could actually go down the strip!
but other than that, it wasn't one of my faves.

I will be doing cars that interest me and cars that I think I can handle (design wise)
a car like Twin Mill has too many compound curves.
And since I design on the flat, it would be a tough project for me.

Owell it was worth a shot - was never one of my favorites either, but it's what came to mind when I thought of "classic hot wheels".

airdave
05-05-2010, 05:14 PM
I got the very first Hot Wheels...probably had 8 or more of the "original 16".
Got the very first Track set.
Joined the Hot Wheels club right away and got the exclusive Chrome Boss Hoss.
I also bought the very first Snake and Mongoose set.

But when Sizzlers appeared in '69 or '70, I forgot all about regular Hot Wheels!
These were Hot Wheels that drove around without having to be pushed!!!

Got the very first "Fat Track" and never looked back! lol

And my first Sizzler was the "Livewire".
probably not the best looking Sizzler, although I thought it was pretty awesome.
And it was this pinkish purple colour that was totally cool to me!

so, that will be my first Sizzler project...

I'd like to see Sidekick as a pm. It was my heaviest, therefore fastest car. My first Sizzlers were the Ferrari 330 P4, and the "Angeleno M70".

Beautiful work Dave!

airdave

Not hard to remember the stuff you really liked!
But like everyone, I never thought to keep all that stuff from my childhood!
Just imagine...

I didn't have a ton of Hot Wheels...I owned about two dozen over a three year period (1968-1971)...then I owned about half a dozen Sizzlers.

Only thing I kept of those, were the Sizzlers (which I sold a few years back with some AFX Slot car stuff)

I do have a lot of more recent Hot Wheels...mostly handed over from my Daughter...who keeps getting them from her GrandFather (my Dad...who currently owns about 12,000 Hot Wheels)

takin' a little break from the Planes again
and putting some more work into my next "HOT" Wheel!

Test build of the first prototype went really good!
Just about everything fell into place perfectly!
I was really worried about getting this one to work,
but I have only minor adjustments to make.

(The model you see is a tad larger than final size will be...this one is about 4" long)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/testbuildprototype.jpg

With the necessary tweaks finished, its now on to paint!
This is my favorite part!...this is my fun!
I almost enjoy this more than the models themselves.
Heres a little teaser of the paint work in progress...

I am just finally catching up with this thread. My taste in 1/60th cars has always leaned towards 'real' car subjects - racing cars, exotic cars and hot rods. If / when you get into something more along my 'style' I'll probably delve into making a few of these. Will be following to see where you take it ;)

airdave

Actually the Batmobile turned out pretty darn good for being so simplified.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/Batmobileinhand.jpg

Its a little bigger than I had planned, but I didn't want to make it too small
because of two smaller parts that have to be assembled (the Intake Hood, and the Windshield Canopy).

(But then again, all my "HOT" Wheels models have ended up a little larger than I originally planned...at least I am trying to keep them fairly consistent.)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/Batmobilesm.jpg

I wonder what it would look like on photo paper?

Well lets see...
The Batmobile, Deora and Scooby Doo Van are all REAL.
Snot Rod and Fillmore, both based on REAL world vehicles.
Sizzlers? REAL, even if they are just Toys.
Only "FAKE" thing so far, is the cartoon based "Shaggy Van".

So theres no excuse!!

lol
I understand...maybe Snot Rod will be more to your liking.
And who know what else I will decide to build.
Its all a personal project...vehicles that have interested me over the years.
Keep watchin'!

lol I have no idea what you are talking about?!
are you using that CA glue again?

are you suggesting a card model of a "wheel rim"?
full size for your Suzuki?
because you can't afford real alloy wheels?

...card stock might hold up, but they will definately need some formers!
How much does your Suzuki weigh?

lol
if you are suggesting miniature wheels, thats not something I am interested in doing.
In fact, it has already been done in a toy version, but it didn't go over very well. These small scale wheel reproductions came in singles and packs of 4, but nobody bought them! lol

Sorry I'm late. ;p

airdave
05-31-2010, 08:56 AM
I have thought a couple of times about adding parts for 3D wheels
and I might still do that.

but that also goes against what I originally intended to do...
the idea was "simple" fold and glue cars that can be assembled in one sitting.
The point was to rely more on the artwork/graphics (which is what I do!)

There are more complicated models out there, sorry, mine are gonna stay as simple as necessary.
And any builder with a little experience could add some wheel depth?

I am working SLOWLY on Snot Rod.

Only other Cars vehicle that I have plans for is Ramone.
I was waiting for someone else to make one, but it never appeared.
Which is okay, because I refuse to use Pepakura anyway.
So I might try to make a Ramone...but it could be tricky for me.

I forgot about The King...that would be cool too.
Since I am a NASCAR fan.

The Batmobile looks great! I see so many models that are heavy on design, but light on graphics. Always nice to see examples of how detailed graphics can balance a relatively simple design.

I especially like the windshield. I think "glass" must be the most challenging graphic to convincingly depict.

KCStephens
05-31-2010, 09:57 PM
I know that I mentioned it somewhere around here in the past...but I'll say it again... I think Rommel's Rod would make a real cool model (in paper of course) and Dave I think you're just the one to make it happen:D:D:D

BTY...Nice boat

airdave
06-02-2010, 11:24 AM
Rommel's Rod....wow, haven't seen that since i was a kid!
if I am correct, another fantastic Tom Daniels design!

Might be a little too complicated for my design skills
and to keep it simple enough for this series.

.................................................. .........................................

"Snot Rod" however is coming along nicely!

Did a "white" beta test build last night
and just about everything went as planned.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/snotrodtest.jpg

A number of small tweaks and adjustments required (thats what a beta test means, right?)
and then it went off to the paint shop.
(did I mention this is my favorite part?)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/snotrodpaintsample.jpg

This is by far pushing the limits of "simplicity" for this series.
Snot Rod has a separate rear Tire assembly, a separate chassis/body assembly,
and the "blown engine" proved to be a bit of a challenge.

I didn't want to upscale the car anymore...trying to keep all these models in the same size/scale range.
So, there are some very small parts to assemble for the motor,
which means this model is a bit trickier than my other "HOT" Wheels vehicles.

Great stuff! :D I just wandered in here for the first time and was blown away. Wonderful, whimsical designs. I was born a bit too early to get in on the Hot Wheels craze, although I did have some "Dinky Toys" cars which are about the same size but not nearly as cool. I'm eagerly awaiting the "Snot Rod". I'm a big fan of drag racing, and there are NO NHRA paper models out there. The Snot Rod is about as close as it gets, for the time being at least. Thanks for designing these and making them available.

I am soooooo chuffed about Snot Rod!!

I can't believe how great this one turned out!
In my opinion, this is my best "HOT"Wheel so far!

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/SnotRod00.jpg

yes, its got a couple of smaller parts to make up the "Blower" and "Scoop"...which makes it a bit trickier for the inexperienced builder, but I think its worth it.

The final effect is so much more than I anticipated.
I am very happy with my limited skill effort on this one!

Lots of cool little details...I had a lot of fun designing this one!

to be honest, i was thinking of using the SnotRod pattern to make another drag car.
just a repaint...lose the "CARS" theme and make it more like a "Muscle Machine"

Second "Drag" car is done!

I have used the "Snot Rod" Cuda to create another drag style car
as Don asked for.
Made a minor change...thought it might be cool to widen the body a bit.
Nothing too drastic, just enough to give a little bit different look when they are sitting side by side.

I won't tell you the theme/paint scheme yet...
doing a test build tonight.

If everything goes okay, then I'll put the kit out tomorrow.

.................................................. ......................

and, already started on the next "HOT" Wheel

Got some planes and other work to do this weekend,
so probably won't get much done for a while.

slightly wider body
moved the "engine" back to the windshield,
added twin "parachutes",
new paint and detail features

and the "Snake Hot Wheels© "Cuda" Funny Car is born!

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/SankeCuda02.jpg

as you can see by the test build photos, the car went together without a hitch!
Model is already up and available for download!

"The Snake" is awesome Dave! You are really doing fantastic work, and in such a short time. Appropriate too, since Don Prudhomme retired this year. His nemesis in the '70's was Tom McEwen who raced a funny car dubbed "The Mongoose". Back in the mid to late '60's I was lucky to see Prudhomme (who was an up and comer at the time) race "TV" Tommy Ivo who was at the end of his career. Ivo had a huge rig with a big picture window on one side, and two top fuelers visible inside. He also brought along a wheelie car. Prudhomme had a beat up no frills trailer pulled by a pickup. They say "chrome don't go" and it sure proved true that day as Prudhomme dominated big time. It's great to finally see some NHRA cars to model - even if they are SD.

welcome back Mikey!

Don...Snake and Mongoose were the second Hot Wheels set* I ever bought...back in about '69, '70?
*Dual track, Snake and Mongoose cars, etc

so, theres a good reason I went with Prudhomme's car for my series.

.....................................

TV Tommy Ivo...yes I saw him in the 60s too...can't remember exactly where...
but when I painted my "Drag Classics" series a few years back I included a classic Ivo burnout.

General Lee was a '69 Charger (Dodge)

My "funny car" is a 70 'Cuda (Plymouth Barracuda)

That would be an insult....to the 'Cuda.

...but maybe, one day, waaaaaaaay down the road

Your airbrush work is fantastic - brought back a lot of memories. To me, the dragsters were the coolest-looking when the mill was in front of the driver. Maybe not safer, but cooler.

...thanks Bob!

ProStocks, ProMods and Funnies still run a forward engine.
As long as there's a firewall, you're okay.

Rear engine "rail" dragsters are no safer...
recent rule changes include a mandatory enclosed rear cage, behind the driver's head.

This came as a result of an engine explosion where shrapnel pierced the rear of a drivers helmet...killing him.

So I thought I posted this earlier, but I can't find it. I downloaded the 'Cuda funny car - very nice looking model. I do have an issue though - I wish the page around the model was a lot cleaner. I'm probably not going to print it to build right now as 1/2 the ink I use will end up being thrown away. Is there any way you could do 'clean' versions of these with only the model and your anti-piracy comments and not the big header?

Either way nice job and thanks.

airdave
06-06-2010, 05:17 PM
First...no....lol....its all about the presentation...and that's my presentation. [sorry]

Second...when you print, do a print preview, and manually reposition the page
to alter the viewable (and printed) area.
Just slide the page up, and don't print the upper part of the page.
(Thats what I do)

Third...I have no anti-piracy comments on the page.
Are you sure you downloaded my model? haha

However, I have included some disclaimers regarding the copyright issues of some of these models.
I recognize that some of the logos, names or original designs are copyrighted I hope my efforts will be recognized solely as "fan art" and not items for commercial use or sale.
I do ask that others not redistribute the models without permission, in the same regard.

The latest "HOT" Wheel has hit the stores!!
...okay, maybe not the stores...but its free on my website anyway!

This one will take a little explain...

Fathers Day is coming.
My Dad is 75 years old and we don't get along the best, but thats a whole other story.
He has loved Hot Rods and Drag Racing all his life.
He's collected Toys for the last 40 years.
He's been collecting Hot Wheels for the last 20 years.
He has a an affection for VW Vans, which started with the Hot Wheels VW Drag Buses.

So when you can't think of anything worth getting him for Fathers Day....
you design him a special custom model!

Paying tribute to Mattel Hot Wheels and Drag Buses
this is my creation:

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/dragbus.jpg

The entire paint scheme I based on a Mattel Hot Wheels theme.
The final version has some glass colouring, a larger parachute attachment and Wheelie bars!
...pictured is the rush prototype build.

nah, these models are too simple Chris.

I'm trying to create the kind of simplicity that I enjoy building
and although the textures and graphics get a little complicated, they are still as simple as possible to build.

Hey, a balance with free stuff and the pay stuff is good...isn't it?

I know what you want...but I'm not sure I have the abilities to design a more complicated 3D model...besides, I don't use any 3D programs.
Full interiors, chassis', engines...all too much for me I think.
And I like the small scale models too.

It has to be something with my ISP. I decided to try my phone and when I used WiFi, I couldn't get the file, but when I switched to 3G, it downloaded just fine. I may reboot my modem and see if that does anything. It is really weird that it will let me download the other files, just not the Drag Bus. If rebooting my modem doesn't work, I am throwing up the white flag and giving up on this. At least I was able to get the file. I will build it tomorrow. Thanks Dave, I am really loving this series.

Going to try the Deora II, with a mild colorshift so it is a deep yellow gold instead of the green!

The name "Deora" is actually a mis-spelling of the Spanish words de Oro which means Gold.
But the name came later in Deora's life, when the model car company AMT held a contest to name the Show Truck.

The original Anderson Bros paint was "one off" mix of a Golden Green colour
(however they didn't record the paint mix, so it could never be properly reproduced)
During its second year of Show Touring, the lease owner Chrysler, repainted it Lime Green Pearl.
It was subsequently painted a Gold Pearl when owned by noted car enthusiast Al Davis.

Deora was one of the "original 16" Hot Wheels vehicles by Mattel, and the Hot Wheels versions came in "Spectraflame" Purple, Gold, Red, Green, Teal, Orange, Blue, Yellow, and Aqua.

Funny, but the Deora, based and built on a brand new Dodge D100 Truck, leased and sponsored by Dodge, toured by Dodge, renamed the "Dodge" Deora...had a considerable number of FORD parts!

legion
06-21-2010, 01:00 PM
Sharing common parts was and still is very Common. Just look at any shared PSA (Peugeot/Citroën/Mitsubishi) model. It is a very effective way of keeping (design) costs down.

[EDIT]

Finished the Deora II:

airdave
06-21-2010, 02:53 PM
nice job on the model!

Sharing common parts was and still is very Common.

In this case, nothing to do with shared parts...Dodge didn't build this car.

Dodge jumped on the bandwagon and adopted this privately built custom as their own,
without realizing that the Anderson Bros had used a ton of Ford and General Motors parts for the custom!
The front steering was Chevy Corvair.
The tailgate "front" door was from a Ford station Wagon,
the glass was Ford...
even the side "intakes" were salvaged Mustang Taillight bezels!

In between other things, I have managed to finish another addition to my "HOT" Wheels Collection!...

this time, my favorite "CARS" character: Ramone

http://cutandfold.info/assets/images/Ramone_Model_Page.jpg http://cutandfold.info/assets/images/Ramone_in_hand.jpg

This one I tried to keep in scale with some of the other cars
but its a tricky build.
Trunk and Fins are a little awkward
and corner connections are small and finicky.

I was going to enlarge the model to make it a little easier to build,
but I wanted to keep everything on one sheet.
Taking up some room on the sheet is two chassis' for this model!
You can make the "Low 'n Slo" Stance
or try the "Hydra-Tilt" Stance, for that cockeyed hydraulic suspension look!

Anyway, hope you like... FIND RAMONE HERE (http://cutandfold.info/html/hot_wheels.html)

Wow, seriously love all the Hot Wheel designs, if one may ask have you considered a 'variant' Deora having a Sky Show launcher and plane ?

Considering that the original Deora packaged in the Canada-only release of the Sky Show set is the rarest of rare HW cars, this could be a real treasure for all those recalling those magnificent cars and the planes they launched.

HaHa I appreciate the ideas!...

but I think I should have chosen a different name for my car collection! lol
...my mistake I guess
My "HOT" Wheels have nothing to do with Mattel Hot Wheels (at least not directly).

I think I will have to think about swapping out the name.

My collection is cars and customs that have had an impact on me during my life.
The Deora I saw in person, way back in "67, '68...(and it just happened to be one of the first Hot Wheels I owned).

LiveWire was, as I remember, my first Mattel Sizzler.
(The Sizzlers probably had a bigger impact on me than the original Hot Wheels)

I do appreciate the Mattel Hot Wheels suggestions,
but unfortunately I'm not that interested in making card models from them.
For me, its has a little more to do with the real vehicles themselves.

alright. but hotwheels is an iconic name, and it fits the scale of the models you make. its ok if you dont want to make the swoopy do, but i like the simplicity of your models, and i figured if anyone could make it simple and still look awesome, it would be you.

I just had a great idea which needs some experimentin' (pics soon as I can):

I found once at my local supermarket (WalMart) a toy kit that allowed you to create your own Hot Wheel using a baked clay. Included were several bases that were the bottom amd wheel and axle assemblies.

My idea: rather than using the clay, simply superglue one of Daves Kool Wheels bodies to the base (after removing the bottom and wheels of his model):D

-or-

Take a set of really cheap generic hot wheel type cars, disassemble them to get the base, and ...superglue one of Daves Kool Wheelz to it.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

haha more Hot Wheels! you guys are determined to get me in trouble with Mattel! aren't you?! lol

you will have to scale the model to fit the wheelbase of your "chassis" but I guess it could work.
Most of my "Kool Wheelz" so far, have been larger than Hot Wheels scale.
Even Hot Wheels are not consistent in scale, so I guess I'm okay?

I haven't settled on an actual scale, I have just been creating them at around the same size...whatever size seems buildable.
My first Ramone was almost exactly a Hot Wheels scale...but was too finicky to build.
It also looked small against all previous models, so I bumped it up about 20%.

good luck murphy!

Hotwheels is so iconic that the name is used for matchbox and off-brand toy cars as well as the official hotwheels cars.

actually "dinky toy" was (up till recently) the most widely used term to refer to small metal toy cars.

I can remember constantly correcting people on the fact that my toys were "Hot Wheels", "Johnny Lightnings", "Corgis", "Ertls"...."not dinky toys!!! arrrgh!"

But then again, I had a ton of Dinky's too!!
being English, I grew up with Dinkys and Corgis.

Which reminds me...theres a couple of Dinky's I want to turn into card models! woohoo!
thanks for the memories!!!

are you young?
if you are 25 or under, I could see you not knowing much about Dinky Toys,
but older than that, you would have to have grown up on the Moon! lol

http://www.dkimages.com/collectables/images/previews/13851804.jpg

yes Dinky Toys was a British Toy, started in the 1930s.
Very big in the late 50s and 60s.
Famous, along with Corgi, for reproducing a lot of Movie and TV vehicles.
Dinky made the jump to North America probably before Matchbox and Corgi.
The term "dinky toy" became a generic name for small metal diecast cars (in North America).
And then came Hot Wheels.

not exactly

Kryten is a character from the Red Dwarf sitcom.

The TUMBLER from "Batman Begins"

I've wanted to do this totally cool car for some time
And its probably the trickiest design so far...

Creating a one sheet, beginners level paper model
required extensive simplification of the shape of the Tumbler.
But even with all the redesigning, the model turned out much better
than I had anticipated and I am very pleased with the end result.

I present, my rendition, of the "Batman Begins" "TUMBLER"!

This line just keeps getting better and better, Dave! If you're open to ideas/requests, I'm thinking the Monkeemobile might be a popular choice, and it doesn't look like it would be too hard to design (easy for me to say). There are a ton of reference photos on the net.

airdave
08-21-2010, 08:39 AM
YES!!! I had the Monkeemobile in my mind when I first started making these models.

Another great custom that I saw the real thing back in the late 1960s!!

...for some reason the idea went flying out of my head and never came back.

until now!!!
Thanks!

obviously it will be a little stylized, like all my mini models,
but it should make for a good build!

............................

right now, I am fighting with the Munsters Koach!
its turning out to be a lot more complicated than I had planned.
Normally I prefer to stylize and simplify the shape of the vehicle to create a simpler one page model,
that maybe even a beginner could handle.
but an open top roadster like the Koach has too many interior components to simplify
and its proving to be a tough design.

anyway, I did the first prototype test build last night,
have to make some major changes to the widened rear end of the coach.
...its just too wide, and the angles cause all kinds of fit problems,
so a big redesign is forthcoming in that area.
Most other areas just require some size and fit tweaks.
And I am now working on engine, exhaust, and interior components.

It will definately be the most complicated Kool Wheelz model, but its all great fun!

The nightmare continues....the Munster's Koach is nearing completion!

First thing you may notice is the lack of a few detail items on the Koach!
Things like the five Coach lamps have been deliberately omitted from the model for a number of reasons.

This is by far the most complicated Kool Wheelz project so far
and its a tricky little build.

Keeping a model limited to one sheet means simplifying things a fair amount
and in this case, even leaving out certain design elements.

I also needed to keep the "simplicity" of the model in line with my other designs
and adding more, small, difficult parts just isn't going to help.

So, I present my mini paper version of The Munsters Koach designed by George Barris

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/MunstersKoach03.jpg

but you get the idea.

Download is up and accessible on my site.

I'm sorry to harp on this...but why does everyone keep suggesting Hot Wheels cars for me to produce?
I have repeatedly stated that I am making a series of model vehicles that are of interest and importance to me
...custom vehicles, show cars, Movie and TV cars and yes, I have made a couple of Hot Wheels.

If you want to know what models I am working on, check my "Current" page.
You can also see models under consideration for future design.

Although I wasn't looking for ideas, I don't mind the suggestions
...Don (rockpaperscissors) reminded me that I wanted to build the Monkeemobile!
but (I apologize) I guess I am just fed up with the constant requests for Hot Wheels cars.

I'm going to continue to make models of vehicles that I have seen or had some experience with in my life,
those that have made some sort of impact on me
and I hope you all continue to enjoy them.

oh, and Bugman, the "StageFright" is actually an unauthorized version of the vintage Drag Car sponsored by Jolly Rancher Candy.
I can't remember who built or designed it.
I seem to think there was a plastic model version of it.

George Barris built the "Raiders Coach" which was based on a Stage Coach design.
"Boothill Express" was based on a Funeral Coach.
Tom Daniel's didn't do a Coach design.
Anyone else know who designed the Candyland Stage?

I'm sorry to harp on this...but why does everyone keep suggesting Hot Wheels cars for me to produce?

AirDave's "HOT" Wheels Collection

Ever since I designed my mini "Hot Wheels Juice Machine"
I have thought about building some small Hot Wheels Sizzlers.

http://cutandfold.info/assets/images/Juice_Machine_Model_1.jpg

There is your answer why we are suggesting HotWheels. We are just following this thread. I think I may have lost interest now.

airdave
08-26-2010, 11:30 AM
first of all, I can't change the name of the thread
...but if you read the name properly, and argue the point...
it does not state "Mattel Hot Wheels"...it says "airdave's" (as in, my collection), "HOT" (as in a capitalized "hot - in demand" reference) and "wheels (meaning "cars)

Second, if you read through the thread, the issue of Hot Wheels is completely explained...more than once.

Thirdly, it is explained and repeated again on my card model site.

Fourth, (referring back to the idea of reading the thread)
the name of the models was changed a long time ago to "Kool Wheelz".

Fifth...the fact that I designed and built a Hot Wheels Juice Machine model almost a year before starting this collection has no bearing on the topic or name.

and now you've "lost interest"?....ha ha your loss, not mine
see ya

so maybe a Mod would be so kind as to change the thread name* to avoid any further whining by me?
*to "Kool Wheelz" instead of "HOT Wheels"

just an update on the earlier post regarding Hot Wheels StageFright and the Jolly Rancher StageCoach drag car...

obviously my statement was incorrect about Hot Wheels StageFright being an "unauthorized version" of the Jolly Rancher drag car.

I had info, years ago that the Stagefright model was based on the Candyland StageCoach,
in the same way many Hot Wheels and Johnny Lightning models were based on real customs
but didn't have the rights and permissions to reproduce the vehicles as original.

I think in this case, Larry Wood might have been inspired by many customs of the era
and its probably unfair to claim that the Stagefright is any sort of "copy".

I didn't know the StageFright was built in full size...this is a fact left out of most "full size" Hot Wheels discussions!...?
So, is this true? or was the 1:1 vehicle built beforehand and copied for Hot Wheels.

Either way, I am liking the look of this "custom" regardless of the fact that it was Hot Wheels...and I'm going to research it a little more.
It is definately being added to the "under consideration" short list!

Thanks for bringing it up Bugman!

wow...that was fast...
I confirmed a few facts about StageFright real easy!

That Hot Wheels info is very misleading.
The claim that this is a Larry Wood design is the biggest mislead!

http://mikeswheels.homestead.com/tp.gifhttp://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb21710/common/skins/common/blank.gif
Apparently the photo of the "real" StageFright is from a 1976 Show Car publication.
And the show vehicle took more than 7 years to complete (meaning the project was started back in '69)

And yet the Hot Wheels version wasn't released until 1977!

lol so the only Larry Wood "design" element would be adapting it into a diecast vehicle!
(sorry Larry, but you shouldn't get design credit for this?)

Although I never saw this car in person, it definately fits into my love of these great 60s and 70s customs!

And just when I was thinking about losing interest like StevO. :)

I never had the opportunity to see StageFright in real life, but heard many stories. I think that's why I had a draw to the Hot Wheels vehicle. My dad actually went to high school with Darryl Starbird (of Predicta fame, among others). My dad used to have a show vehicle that he took all over the country, just prior to his death. I actually got to set atop of the Boothill Express in 1981 at Ray Farhner's car show in Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Farhner was the designer of the vehicle and my he and my father had become friends over the years.

I've got another real, 1:1 vehicle that I would like to suggest. It might be a complete pain to design, but it has always stuck in my head as one cool and very unique car. I bring you, The Roach Coach. It was designed by Ed "Newt" Newton and built by the legendary Dan Woods and Jake Jacobs. I had the opportunity to see this creation at least 6 times during my childhood. Newt took it around on the World of Wheels car show circuit, which my father also showed in. This thing REALLY is wild!

And just when I was thinking about losing interest like StevO. haha I'm gonna assume that this was a totally sarcastic comment? it better be.

...because Steveo's comment was extremely irritating to me and thats why I got snarky.
Yes they're my model designs, so I'll do what I want...but to announce that he's "losing interest" in my FREE models because they aren't what he thinks they should be?!
That really irked me.

yeah I remember the Roach car...I LUV that colour!
but I never liked the car.
Not sure why, just don't like it....I think it looks kinda like an ass?
And impossible (for me) to design in paper!

but I do like the classic show car customs suggestions!
:)

All these customs remind me of a set of baseball cards I used to have in the Sixties featuring custom rods and pickups. Can't remember the name of the series though.

not sure about Baseball Cards...
but there was a set of Custom Car cards called "Way Out Wheels"
a larger format card, maybe one and a half times a normal Baseball card
with nice full colour pics and info about the customs on the rear.
circa 1970

But I think they were all George Barris customs.

This is Card #16, the only one I have now.

I have a bunch of mini hot wheels that were put out in the early 70's ('72 & '73 to be exact) they were called Zowees. There were about 10 or 12 different desingns in all. Each one was about half the size of a regular hot wheels car. I can remember getting one or two each week over the summer. They were loose in a little round goldfish bowl beside the cash register in the basement toy department of the JJ Newberrys that my mom worked at. (Boy those were the days!) They could have not cost more that a few cents a piece back then. Today they are worth between $10-20 each, some bringing as much as $60-70 each. Any way, The designs are pretty cool, they remind me a lot like what you are doing here with your designs. Maybe tonight after work I'll dig 'em out and post some pics. May give you some more ideas for future creations.

The cards I remember came in a pack like baseball cards and included bubble gum. The timeframe was mid-sixties. I never heard of "Way Out Wheels" cards until now.

Update - I just did a quick Search and Topps was the manufacturer. There is a set on eBay (US) currently for sale.

well, my vacation travel project will be the tumbler. I've printed it as 200%, double printed the windows and body folds so I can add some 3d effects, printed the hubcaps at 10% enlargements so I can cone them and recess mount them. TBC ...

Ok, not entirely dis-satisfied with my build:

wow, that does look pretty good!

thanks for posting the build pics...much appreciated!

the layered parts definately add more to the simplified design.
whats the size? about double the scale it looks like?

nice clean build!
only two minor errors (for the benefit of any other Tumbler builders)...

front wheels - need to rotate so the that the linkage arms*
(*simplified artwork on the outside face of the wheels)
are horizontal, with the white disc thing to the top.

rear wings - should be mounted by their leading edges with the trailing edges up in the air...
and the middle wing extends over top of third wing, and the first wing should extend over top of the second.

the Tumbler and a Polar Bear?...what is this, the LOST island?

Most welcome. I didn't have any completed pictures where I was building the model (I was camping!) so a lot of guess work went into the model.

It rained on vacation, I built a lot of 1-2 day models...

I built the polar bear a few years ago, but last spring I dumped a cup of coffee on it, My wife really liked the PB and asked if I could replace it.

just got a private Email and wanted to share some of the content...

I was reluctant to reply to the email, since it came in marked as "Bulk/Spam"
and contained an advertisement for a Mortgage company (at the end of the letter).

I can't seem to find the sender's name here at PM, so I'm unsure if he's a Member here
or just casual visitor to my Card Model site.

But the content of the email was very specific about me and my models
so I am confident its not "junk mail"...and I am pleased to have received it!

In response to this statement:
Thanks For being so giving you are making alot of people happy with your works
I thank you very much! I'm glad you are enjoying the models!!

In response to this statement:
and making it to where dads can spend time as they use to with their sons doing your creationswow...I never really thought about the models in this way, and it really pumped me up that I was doing a good thing like that.
My ego did a little inflate and my hat fell off.

In response to the future model requests contained in the email:

Speed Racer, Racer X and all the enemy vehicles.sorry...no...not only did I not like this cartoon as a kid, I found the vehicles to be too farfetched and unvelievable within the context of the stories.
Not my cup of tea I'm afraid.

1966 BatmobileI've thought about it, mainly because I have already done two other Batmobiles. But that means I have to consider all other Batmobiles.
And I'm not that interested in the others...and if I was forced, I would choose one of the original Comic versions.
Don't get me wrong, Barris' car is beautiful...but I am reluctant to tackle the open cockpit and the bubble canopies make it a no-go anyway.

MonkeeMobile...is actually in the works! 'nuff said

Starsky & Hutch Gran Torinonot even if you tied me down and forced me to watch a single episode of that godawful TV show!
...sorry, but the lamest custom or muscle car ever put on TV!
A 3 ton car that handles like a boat, with a power robbed, pollution controlled small block Ford engine? and the stripe is ugly too!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
One of the most interesting Movie cars ever made...you sort of love it...and you sort of hate it...
I saw this thing in person when the movie came out back in '68,'69...and boy it is BIG!
But alas, I think too complicated a design for me to tackle without the real interest in making this car.

all the diff. 60's Hot Wheels and Hot Wheel Sizzlersokay....do I have to bring out the Hippo? or the Butterflies?
or maybe even the Monkey?

its all in good fun...but most of all, its a definate pleasure!

They look great together. Brings me back to when I used to go to Raceway Park on Long Island. Besides Funny Cars, I got to see the Lil' Red Wagon do it's wheelie thing, and the Green Monster jet car. The ETs back then seem absolutely slow compared to today's times.

"Lil Red Wagon" and "The Original Backup Pickup" have both been in my mind for some time!

Art Arfons Jet Car (Green Monster) might be tricky, but interesting!

ETs?...I saw Don Garlits set a new record running 7.40 in the quarter!
Today...I have two friends who's "street legal" cars run 6 second times at the track!!

I also saw him hit 240mph.
Today...under 300mph is too slow for Top Fuel!

hahaha

......

wheelie bars?...option?...it already is an option!...?
why wouldn't you have the option of adding some wheelie bars?
you can add whatever you like.

oh, you want me to add the wheelie bars?

first of all, I tried designing some simple wheelie bars for the VW Drag Truck.
They are very simple in design, do the job, but wouldn't win any design awards.
Another issue is the space on the "single page model".

no, thats the kind of extra that you can add...I did all the hard work...you put on those personal finishing touches.
