Once I heard of this contest, and after I got my Ghost SPAD out of my system, I settled in and built this great little lighthouse from Fiddler's Green.

I would have posted a whole bunch of build pictures, but I discovered after the fact that my SDHC card was corrupt, or has some other kind of technical issue, because none of the build photos were on it.

Rats.

I did some cool technique on this build, like laying down individual rows of shingles for the roof, and cutting out two layers of window frames, sandwiching pale yellow vellum in between, cutting out two layers of trim work to give it more dimension, cutting out all the spaces in between the mullions on the light, the rail, and that kind of thing.

All done on colored and textured card stock, and I even found out that with the vellum in the windows that it could be lit up. So I cut a hole in a piece of chipboard, mounted the model to it, and set it on top of a lamp.

Enjoy!

Another one of my favourite models is light houses. Thanks for sharing the mods you made to this model. Some nice ideas to use once I get more of the basics out the way. Love the light inside too. Hmm, flashing led for the lamp as well as the light below. OK.. need to finish the GeeBee first. Got to keep telling myself, one thing at a time.

Again though, very nicely done.

Cheers

That is so neat! I've done a few of the FG lighthouses, but it never occurred to me to do the windows that way. I think I'll steal your technique. Thanks.

Wow, guys! Thanks for the comments!!!

I'm one of those modelers who always thinks of something right after I finish it... The idea for doing the windows came from finding an old piece of lightweight drafting vellum and thinking of a way to use it in the model. Windows seemed a good choice. About ten minutes after I did the windows, I realized: I could have done those with something like cellophane or even copier-transparencies. Same thing with the light atop the tower. That really should have been done with transparency, because the whole window on the real one (http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=125) looks really fragile, because the mullions are really thin. I should have thought of that sooner.

I can't take credit for the double-layer window casings, rails and such, since I saw that technique on this board, in the thread where Tunny is doing the Black Pearl (http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/ships-watercraft/2804-black-pearl-scratch-build.html). He showed this nice series of photos (Post #7 in the thread) where he did windows that way, and I loved the technique. So, the credit for that idea goes to him.

Your kind comments are much appreciated, gang!!

That's a great build Lancer!!!! I love the FG light houses. They are very fun to build. Next, you need to build another light house and put in a motorized LED for a beacon :D

You could also do it with several LED's and have them light up in a slow rotation. The ones on each side of the main could be dimmed to look like the light is rotating slowwly. No motor to worry about then. Just a different way to do it. Would also be more economical on power too. :)

Either way I love the idea of lighting any model that has lights or windows. Just adds a certain something.
