I am going to be trying something new and signing up for our company craft fair (noted elsewhere)

I am looking for people to build any models from my site and mail them to me. I will pay postage. Compensation will be in the form of triple value of the kit in store credit and if the model sells you will get 100% of sale in cash back. I will likely sell all models in a bidding system somehow. Every model that I get I will print up a minimum of 10 copies and sell them at the craft fair. Designers will get standard cut minus my usual 20 percent and in this case printing costs (low due to continuous ink system!!!)

I need the models complete and mailed by end of september. If you already have one built thats fine - same deal applies.

If you send me an ecardmodels exclusive it will be 5 times value of kit. :)
Thanks!
Chris

I've got a few spare DGA models that could use a good home. You OK with small scale? (1:72) - most of the models I'd part with are about 15-25cm in wingspan.

Any thoughts on protecting the models for shipment? I recently brought a couple models on vacation with me (in a box with tissue surrounding each) and to get some good photos with a friend's professional camera. The models both suffered moderate damage and the box wasn't tossed around much at all. (Bent biplane struts, broken fuselage on Old Crow, and broken-off landing gear.) All recoverable with a bit of CA glue but I wouldn't want you to have to spend a lot of time repairing all the models heading your way.

forgot the packing question....

I packed a rather fragile plane to my father in law a few years ago....

used a pretty good sized box about 2 inches larger on every side. layer of packing peanuts. Put in plane. filled to the top with peanuts. sealed and shipped. Only damage was landing gear came off that I could not get to stay on hardly in the first place ;) it was a kamikaze so it was in flight configuration ;)

My display case runneth over, so I can cough up some of CT Ertz's ironclads if you want them. I would be willing to sacrifice the CSS Huntsville, the CSS Tuscaloosa, the "double ender" and the "dismal swamp ironclad". Since the double ender and the dismal swamp vessels were beta builds, they don't have display bases. You can find photos on my build reports here or all of them are over at Zealot at My fleet of Confederate ironclads - Zealot Hobby Forum (http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=168877)

(Don't worry Corey, I like your models, just need to make room for more!)

I can get them shipped out Monday if you want them.

Off the subject, but I would also like to find a good home for the 1/48 scale plastic model helicopters on the shelf below the ironclads in the above photo. There's a HH-60, MH-60, AH-1, AH-64 and Canadian JetRanger. If anyone in the United States wants them, please PM me. For cgutizmer, this will give me more room for card models. :o

The units that flew these in the local area are all gone. I thought you wouldn't mind me talking about pl****** if it was going to a good cause, such as making room for paper models. Wife says either the models go or she goes. I'm going to miss her . . .

I may have a suggestion for shipping models. When I sent in a 1:33 Cessna 172 to Sakrison for the EAA display, I built a little platform for the model. I got a box big enough that the plastic sheet I had would fit diagonally. I used 1mm cardboard for supports. I built a couple of braces for the wings, tail, and main fuselage to sit on so the landing gear wouldn't take the weight of the packing peanuts. I then built a small protective box around the propellor to keep it from getting bashed. The plane arrived without any damage at all. I may have some pictures of it, but they're buried at the moment.

Confederate States invade Wisconsin! The CSS's Baltic, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Palmetto State, Double Ender and Dismal Swamp vessels are packed in their mysterious gravity-defying boxes and ready to be shipped. I'm not sure how you will give me store credit for the Palmetto State, but I bet you will get a lot of sales of this model! http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

For CT Ertz, I now have a large hole in my ironclad display that need to be filled. Time to get back at that computer and start designing!http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

A short time ago there was a Marek Marathon where the Ju-87 was finished and the He-51 still needs work. The Ju-87 is available (w/ or w/o flight crew) but the He-51 still may not make the cut-off.

Hi Chris,

Couple of questions.
1) I'm working on a 3ft & 4ft long SR71 to send to your site for sale-I have a built the 4ft, the question is what if you don't have them listed yet? Still count?

2) Got some simple Stomp Rockets (#1 Tutorial Rocket to be exact), since they have your Logo on them with website url and my name as the designer plus my logo too, would it be ok to just give them away for free to younger kids (to bug their parents for more)? I did a bunch of prints of these doing different colors for a test...same pattern just different colors.

3) Dave has been doing some repaints, one or two of these might head your way too, even though you don't have them listed yet...I'm building a NASA version and the RCAF is already done, they are 2ft long...

I'm just going to throw all of the small rockets in a flat rate box.

Says these need to be done by the end of September, is this correct?

Best regards,
Mike Bauer

I already have a fair representation of DGA on the way.

The gear and props on some of the DGA models I'm sending are a bit fragile, so I'm taking some extra time in reinforcing with CA and building boxes around the gear before shipping. Got 6 of the 10 secured at this point. I'll hopefully have them northbound this weekend - you'll just have to pull the boxes off when you receive 'em - hopefully there'll be no damage - maybe a prop or wheel here an there. I think you'll be able to manage repairs. ;)

Nice protection on those! I think I can glue a wheel or two back on :)

Mike - dont send me a 3 or 4 foot model, table space wont allow.... I also wont be doing any freebies as this is purely a commercial venture for a change ;) They can however take my biz card and get free stuff from my site. I am also considering giving each customer a $5 credit on my site to get them shopping :)

If you want to send me models that I WILL eventually sell thats fine and dandy too :)Just need to make sure I can get copies printed before the craft fair.

Chris, I can offer up the OP-2E Neptune...however, it was not the most perfect model built if you recall with the slightly off kilter tail. You can though, have it displayed as an example to show prospective customers what the completed model looks like. :)

One other thing Chris, I often tend to print out models smaller than the original because it saves me cardstock, and space to display the finished model. Basically I set my printer to print "4 on 1" pages. So the finished B-25 will be smaller than what the normal person prints out. If that is still ok, I will ship it out to you as soon as it is finished.
I would say the finished model is nearly 1/100 scale.

cgutzmer

those were freebies ;) I wont be selling those! :) still feel free to build of course ;)

Paladin - I would prefer if the demo's were closer to true scale for display at the craft fair. I dont want people to see how small it is and just walk away. I dont mind if its shrunk a little bit like 25% (max) or something but 75% reduction is too much. Sorry but thanks for letting me know!

These should hopefully make the trip. Hopefully my pics of the boxes around the gear and props and the peanut packing idea will help others. There are a few biplanes in this box, and I inserted peanuts between the wings as well to keep struts from collapsing.

Hey Chris, do you want me to throw this model in the next box? It's XCraft's Heinkel Lerche. It doesn't take up much table space. It's listed on your website under X-planes, but not under the Luft46 heading.

Need some input.... I am in the process of printing out models. The designers will still get their fair cut of course. :) Whats a fair charge for these models when printed? I dont know much about printed models. For instance if one of the models base price is $4 Is it fair for me to change say 50 cents per printed sheet?

That would make one of the ironclads sell for $8. I print the model itself on 65 lb paper and instructions double sided on regular paper reducing the amount of paper used but not ink.

Is that too steep? General pricing would be 8-12 dollars. I also needed to reduce on hand copies to 5 each, instead of 10. I cant afford to pre-print that many. I will take orders for additional models though.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Chris

cMags
09-01-2010, 01:23 PM
Well, with very general numbers, the cost of printing a model is approximately 40-60 cents per page. Here's how I got that:

$20 for a 250-sheet ream comes to 8 cents per page
$50 in ink cartridges netting between 100-150 sheets at high quality (very general possibly ambitious estimate), comes to about 33-50 cents per page.

I know you have cheaper ink so that makes up a little, but charging only 50 cents per kit is VERY reasonable. A dollar would be reasonable too, if not just for the printing, but also for the have-it-now and I-don't-want-to-DIY convenience.

cgutzmer
09-01-2010, 01:41 PM
you mis read - 50 cents per sheet is what I suggested. I think I will drop that to a quarter per sheet printed. My goal here is to advertise the hobby but I cant afford to take a loss either....

ARGH! I was printing off the p40 warhawk last night - following my usual method, I print one copy to make sure nothing gets cut off - looked good! Is that the paper AircraftWerks (http://ecardmodels.com/index.php?manufacturers_id=34) P-40? If so, the pages are set at 8.5x11 but the margins are tight. Double check again - looks like the wingspar and the starboard window frame (part 106) may be the tightest parts.

cgutzmer
09-02-2010, 08:40 AM
window frame is what got chopped :(

Thats the variant I built a couple years ago and has been hanging in my kids room :)
Chris

cMags
09-02-2010, 11:01 AM
Well then at least it's only one page you have to re-print. But double-check that wingspar - it looks like it's tight towards the top of the page.

Might also want to talk to the designer about modifying the parts placement. There is plenty of room to move the window frames inboard a bit.

BTW - the gray one is robust enough (and balanced) to fly - you might have noticed a "test" ding or two. Best launch technique is to fly it almost flat using an 18" piece of PVC as a blow gun. Enjoy! Oh, beware of wet grass; I don't think I spray sealed the ones I sent ...

No way!
I was sure that it would be there by now. I really hope it didn't get lost....or worse yet...eaten by one of those machines where you get just pieces of the item in an envelope. GRRRRR!!

Lady asked me if I wanted insurance and delivery confirmation, but I declined so as to not run up the cost for you. I'm thinking I should have at least gotten the delivery confirmation.

Then again, there is always the possibility that it is returned to me for some odd reason....we can only wait to see what happens. Bummer really....and that is with me sending it from the main hub post office that only drives the outgoing mail to the San Antonio hub to be sent out.

The box is 16"x16"x15"...so I would think there would be some delay. The lady said that the box size was considered to be too large for Priority and Express without charging an extra fee....even though it only weighed like 1.5 lbs or something like that. And now that I am thinking about it...I remember noticing that the tape I had used to put the label on was not sticking well to the box...cheap packing tape. I meant to ask her to retape it for me. Lets hope the label did not come off of the box!

Unnnlessssssss...it really is going Pony Express.

Well, I can't really fit any more into the box I don't think....well maybe some more DGA models...I have about 10 more left that my son has not thrown all over the house. LOL!
I think it would do better up with you, if not at the fair, then in the library....because here...all it's doing is sitting in the closet here in my home office. No shelf space. Its too big to take to my shelves at work (wing span)...there keep the smaller wingspan planes I built which are not confiscated by my son...which I have the F-86, ModelArt P-51, XP-54, CL-760 and the Swiss ME-109. :D Which reminds me....I don't know where I am going to put Putt Putt Maru, another Airacomet I have to finish up or Will's two XP-72's when they are done and complete!

10-16-2010, 09:18 AM
Well the AMFAM craft fair came and went. Financially it was a huge bust. I sold just enough to cover my entry fee and pay for the paper I used to print. :(

For the hobby I would say it was a big success! Well I think anyway... I suppose time will tell. I spent the entire day talking with people and explaining the the hobby. There was very little interest in buying the built up kits and marginal interest in buying the pre-printed kits. However the built up kits generated a lot of traffic and questions about the hobby. I gave out about 350 biz cards and 40 or so flyers - thanks John and Mauri!. Here are a few select stories from the day. Crappy pics to follow due to backlight and my flash didnt go off for some reason.....

Story one:
I was getting everything brought in with my dads help and working on setting up. A gentleman walked up to me and was watching me get setup. He was retired air force from korea and noticed the planes I was putting out. He was talking about the ones he flew and such. I put out an specific sabre jet and just looked at it and started to cry - turned out it was similar to the one that was dedicated to his dad here in sun prairie. He told me where it was so I will go and try to snap some pics. He said it wasnt an f-86 but the conversation was a bit muddled at that point but I am going to see what I can do about making one up for him (I know who he was there with) after I go get some pics

Story two:
We were about halfway through the day and this guy walks up with a big honking camera and asks to take my pic holding up a couple of the models. I see that the lanyard he is wearing says EAA on it. He introduces himself as Wink from Wisconsin Aviation. He has never heard of paper models before (big surprise eh?) However he LOVES them and asked me if I could come give a talk about the hobby, models and history of some models. He also told me they have been looking for a new display at the Madison airport and thinks paper models might fit their needs nicely. In addition he belongs to a couple EAA clubs and will ask them if they would like me to come give a talk about the hobby :)

Story three:
the day was starting to wrap up and I was packing up little by little. A little boy came over (about 8 years old) and they asked me about the models. I gave the run down of paper etc etc etc (I think the people with tables next to me can give a good speech on it now....) the boy picked up a bunch looking at them and the father said its time to go and they left. About 5 minutes later they came back with mom and the boy proceeded to explain to his mom everything I just told him a few minutes ago :) He did a good job! SO I of course gave him a model for being such a good helper explaining the hobby to him mom. His face just lit up and he got so happy! This is about when the show wrapped up and as I was taking the first load back to the car the little boy held the door for me and thanked me again :)

All in all it was a good time and got to tell lots of people about the hobby who never heard of it before :)

The guy in the shadows is my dad!
Thanks!

I also forgot to mention that I did not ge the second table so I think my display was too cluttered...

One guy stopped by my table and looked at it and said "This is your first craft fair isnt it....." Bad sign! But he followed up with lots of help :)

He told me that in some cases less is more. It was too hard to see the individual planes and since my real goal was to sell kits and not the planes themselves (although that was intended too but not the main directive) he suggested I get more creative with my display. Suggested a green felt table cover with a runway on it if possible some hangars and such possibly build a BIG control tower out of paper to put above and behind the table to attract attention. LED lights along the runway etc etc. make a real scene that will show fewer planes but make it seem more real and induce people to want to talk about them. Say maybe have ONE of each type of plane on display but have many liveries printed for each plane type when someone shows interest. If the display gets bought put up another plane to replace it.

Also get planes up off the ground by suspending with poles with a line run between them. This will get peoples attention from afar....

If I do this idea I will likely build in a modular format to fit different table sizes much like building a modular train layout. Power can run through prefabbed connectors (If I add electricity) This is just food for thought as it takes a lot of time i dont have right now ;)

Just a suggestion, but putting some of the photos on ecardmodels.com would give people some idea of the relative size of the models. I, too, was surprised by the size of the stomp rocket planes (and the P-59, Mi-6, etc.) Some people build big models for impact, I like small model so I can have more in my limited display area. The photos give a good comparison and will help my future buying decisions.

I add my thanks for going above and beyond for our community. Like your avitar, I give to a big two thumbs up. Don't forget to take the Zenith CH-701 with your photo on it to the EAA meetings!

Finally, I would still like to get some photos of the Mi-6 if you get a chance. Also, did the change sheet for it ever show up?

What is a change sheet? I will try to grab some pics soon - I kinda forgot ;) sorry!

I have roughly 700 models I need to get pics up for yet... its an extremely time consuming process that I am getting some help for... in fact I need to call him soon to work out specifics. When i changed site design it broke my old picture setup :( if anyone is bored and feels like doing extremely time consuming boring tasks like adding pics let me know ;)

I got the plane with my photo on it setting next to our table :)

Way back on post #91, n810 stated (in regards to his Mi-6 model)

"I'm going to be revisiting this one soon, and will be sending to Chris some parts for it, including formers and updated instructions. Hopefully he will decide to make those a freebie for anyone who has bought it.

It also prints out great at 2 sheets/page for a smaller, more manageable model."

I was just wondering if you ever got the changes he made to the model.

In hind sight, I'm not too surprised that not that many models sold. The basis of the hobby is in the building of the kit, not the end model itself. Kind of like life, it's the journey, not the ending, that's interesting. I guess if you flew/drove/piloted a specific piece of equipment that was on display and lacked the time or skill to build it yourself, you would buy the finished kit. Otherwise, it's more fun to "build your own" than purchase a premade model. Still, many of the models you got are true works of art, way above my abilities.

Great to hear that the show was a fun adventure....great stories of the day. Very nice of that one guy to give you pointers for the next show.

Depending on how difficult the work is, I can possibly help with this on my free time. Just know though....if it entails knowing how to build a website per say, I can't help much....never built up a website before.

However, if all that needs to be done is copy and paste links from one place to another so that the picture shows (like hot linking a shot here to the forums) then I can surely do that. Or, if there is some directions I can follow to slowly but surely link 700 photos into the shop...that I can do. :D

its not linking 700 photos - its 700 MODELS!! approx 3800 pictures ;)

Need to know how to use FTP and the pic add client I have isnt the easiest interface but it works ;)

Help with even one part or the other would be great! Of course I need to know the person really well due to the needed access levels - touch base with me via email if you are interested :)

Chris, nearly 4000 pics? Yikes! The FTP part probably can be done as a batch process but if your pic add client adds only one pic at a time you've got a monumental task. Hopefully you can at least add all the pics for each model in one pic add operation.

Hope this works out.

Hey Chris, shoot me some details when you get a chance, I might be able to script something up to help the upload via FTP go a little smoother. Either way I'm willing to help out with some of the gruntwork too. I am familiar with FTP, HTML, and basic website design as well.

Thanks! Got a couple others helping out now :) I will let ya know if we decide more is needed to get this done in the short term, dont want too many people working on the same stuff or it gets confusing!
