I've had the "too short" roadwheel rim happen so often that I've gone to defensive building - always leave one end of the rim with a few mms of extra card. Once most of the rim is glued down then I trim the rim to exactly fit the wheel and colour the excess bit. I agree that positioning the seams against the track is a smart move even if you get to rims to fit well.

Regards,

Charlie

I am definitely paying attention to your build, Greg, and taking notes. I'd like to try this one some day. At my current rate of building, it should be in about three decades (News item: "Hundred-year-old model builder completes Japanese tank model.").

OK. More progress and some changes in my approach to building this tank.

The part numbers and instructions would have the builder install the fenders and a bunch of detail parts before working on the major suspension components. This makes no sense to me, so I'm building the suspension and tracks before getting to the fenders.

The idler and drive wheels are done and installed. There are no issues with the idlers wheels but the drive sprockets take some special care.

When installing the tapered web parts (#54) of the drive sprockets, install them piece by piece. What I mean is install the outer piece first and get it lined up with the outside surface of the sprocket. Then install the inside surface on the back sides. The first one I tried I glued the outside and inside surfaces together first and then tried to install it into the gear ring assembly. It would not fit. I had to cut and splice it to get it to work. I positioned this frankenstein mess on the inside so it would be less visible. When I switched my approach my fit issues virtually disappeared.

Greg

Advice on sprocket assembly duly noted for future reference. Your sprockets and idlers look terrific, Greg. I do like this tank!

It may seem that I have abandoned this thread, but fear not!. I have been busy building road wheels. Each of the wheel assemblies shown is made up of 22 parts. That's 176 parts total. It has taken me over a week to muddle through all of them.

Still no major fit issues!

Greg

When you begin to build it (several decades from now), I'll try to guide you around the few pitfalls. Unfortunately, I might suffer from some sort of dimentia at that time and forget everything....
