Belfast's big bang.

Witnessed today ... HMS Belfast simultaneously firing all 12 of her 6" guns.
What a bang, and boy did the Royal Party jump. As did the rest of us. I don't know anyone that was expecting that to happen. Fantastic. It more than made up for the disapointment of the cancelled Fairy Swordfish and helicopter fly-pasts.

Johnny.

Where did the Royal Navy find the budget to actually have gunpowder available to fire the guns?
Given that in UK, as in NZ Defence Dept funding is regularly so reduced as to be carving into the marrow, the bones long-since having been pared-away.

It would certainly be both an impressive sight and sound to experience.

Kind and Respectful Regards Johnny, Uyraell.

Not certain on this Uyraell, but I'm pretty sure the Belfast no longer belongs to the Navy. She is administered by a charity trust with strong connections to the Imperial War Museum.

I don't doubt for one minute that the charges fired were probably mocked up fireworks, not proper blanks, but it didn't half make us all jump when all 12 guns went off at the same time. I won't be surprised if there are a few new cracks in Tower Bridge or the Tower of London.

"Shame about the cancelled flybys though."

Queen Elizabeth has reigned over us for 60 years, but Mother Nature has rained on us for much, much longer, and the jealous bitch really stressed the point today I guess.

The weather really does know how to spoil everything. I stood in the doorway watching the rain lashing down, the wind blowing a gale - there was a sound of some fireworks being set off in the distance ! i thought "bloody hell, this could so easily be November we are in"
