Renault R-35 Beta Build

Jmodule has permitted me to build his beta model of a 1/72 scale Renault R-35.

Here you see the inside of the turret cut out with the turret ring pushed through the hole in the turret base.

The hull is going together with no apparent problems.

The fenders are matched with the corresponding suspension parts.
The "front arrow" seems to be pointing toward the rear wheel which has me confused.
I need to think about the fender locations for a while.

In this picture, you see that the turret ring has been edge glued using Alleene's Tacky Glue. This allows the turret to turn smoothly when inserted into the hull.

Instead of using cereal box for spacers, I drew extra tabs on the suspension tabs.
This worked, but I might have avoided warpage in the suspension by using cereal box.

A copy of the model file was printed on regular paper, a section of track was cut out and pasted to a corresponding section of cardstock track.
Aleene's glue was used again due to the low water content.
Water in glue might make the colors in the paper track run (especially red).

When the model is finished, acrylic paint will be used to touch up the white spots.

As I worked on the turret, I realized that I had a problem.
I made mountain folds all the way around the turret and was gluing it together when I realized that a valley fold was needed on the left side.

Fortunately, it was not too late to correct the problem.

My first fatal mistake.
When I closed the top of the turret, all of the tabs were glued at once with the results shown in the picture.
I should have glued the white tabs, one at a time to keep them under the top of the turret.
Did the same thing with the rear of the hull and had the same results.

Good enough for a Wargame but not good enough for a build thread.
I will need to build a second turret and attempt to do a better job.

The fenders and tracks are not glued yet.
They were only set against the hull for the picture.

Here is the second turret.
I had the advantage of being able to hold the first turret in my hand and see where the problems are.
All folds are mountain folds with the exception of the two valley folds and one no fold.

Thanks for taking this one on and providing this very informative thread. I find that using tabs at this small scale can make assembly even more challenging. I appreciate seeing your progress.

An interesting comment.

I have built 1/144 scale WW I planes using the edge gluing technique but never 1/72 scale armor.

It would certainly prevent the white tabs from showing.

I may give it a try someday.
