We recently said goodbye to a colleague at the Army War College. He was a specialist in German military history, so I built a little howitzer as a going-away gift for him.

It was a World War I era toy that is one of the freebies available on the Kartonmodelle forum (http://www.kartonmodell-forum.de/forum/).

The only modifications I made were (1) to print an extra copy on bond paper in order to back up the frame and splinter shield and the otherwise hollow wheels and (2) to use #76 brass model railroad wire with rolled paper bushings for the axles and trunnions.

I used to manhandle the 105 howitzers myself in the RCA (Royal Canadian Artillery) for a brief period.

By the way, I tried the Alta Vista Babel Fish translator (which installs right on the toolbar) and it does a fair job of translating the German there.

Hi Missy. With regard to your query, "can you link me to download sections and download forums as well as upload forums," once you register with the forum, you can get access to the historic models by clicking on the icon at the words "Historische Kartonmodelle / Free downloadable historic cardmodels" just below the picture of the week. You can also get access to free models designed by members of the forum. Downloading is easy -- just a click of the mouse -- the problem is registering in the first place. My high school German of fifty years ago only gets me so far and all I can say is to try to work through the process. Babelfish, that Terry recommends, is a good idea. I have been using an old German dictionary to supplement the Google translation tool (which has some limitations -- for example, the German word they use for paper model in the forum -- "bogen" -- is translated by Google as "elbow" -- true, but not very relevant in this context). Perhaps one of our German speaking members can be more helpful.

Terry -- I had a Canadian roommate in college and spent a summer working at a fishing lodge a hundred miles north of Toronto in 1959. I also made some good Canadian friends over the years, serving with the United Nations Command in Korea, and can still remember most of the verses of "Has Anyone Seen the Colonel?" and "Sweetbrier was Never Like This!"

babelfish good ill have to get that your info was good i did find some realy nice models so far and i did make it threw regestering some how lol.. thank you for the basic info i got a god start with that. it is a very nice forum guess ill be getting a translator and learning a bit of the language:-)

If I remember the hardest part was knowing that they wanted a full first name / last name to register. Once I got that down I believe the rest was pretty self explanatory.
