Gun Carrier Mk.1 Beta2

Hello all,

Further to Charlie's post on this same topic, I have been progressing my build of this unusual subject from Wayne McCullough. In 1:48th scale, it has lots of lovely detail and would lend itself to rescaling. Some pics of the work so far.

The tracks were rather easy to make, just a bit repetitive with over 80 links per side. Worth all the effort in the end though.

I added some extra detail in the driver's cab, foot pedals made from slivers of card. I'm not sure if these are authentic though, but they add some interest here.

Details of the driver's cabs and engine compartment.

All the best and happy modelling

Bernie

Absolutely outstanding, Bernie!

To paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke: Any sufficiently advanced paper modelling skill is indistinguishable from magic.

Thanks for stopping by Don and for your kind comments. This kit has to be Wayne's most complex work to date and while seeming difficult at first glance, is beautifully engineered which adds to the ease of building. I have made the build more difficult for myself however, by developing the simplified details on parts such as the track guards and drivers compartments. I have followed Charlie C's lead in using a single layer for the raised details.

All the best and happy modelling

David, Kristen and Tim, thanks for stopping by. Work continues with the completion of the cab shells and track guards. I was a bit apprehensive about this part of the build, but my fears were unfounded as everything literally fell together. The cabs have not been glued down yet, they are just sitting in place. Testament to the engineering of the kit.

As evidenced by the last photo, the extra effort in cutting out the track-guard detail paid off, otherwise most of the tracks would have been hidden.

All the best and happy modelling.

Wayne left the track cover behind the drivers' cabs as a solid piece. If you cut this away as you've done, if you want to be accurate, you'd have to add another cross piece to represent the box the control rods ran in (attached).

Your beta is coming along nicely.

Regards,

Charlie

Thanks for the info Charlie, it did look a bit odd when I cut this area out. Have added some replacements.

All the best,

Bernie

Work progresses with the engine and transmission. I have strayed from a straightforward build here by first reinforcing the transmission housing with cyano and then sanding to a more smooth shape. Card strips were then added to simulate the prominent flange and slivers of plastic rod added to represent bolt heads. The whole was then painted an acrylic off-white.

The starter handle is from a piece of copper wire and the exhausts from paper lollipop sticks. I also added a transmission shaft from various diameters of plastic rod, but these are barely visible and will be totally invisible when the whole is assembled. Hey-ho, but we know it's there gang.

This unit would also look good in an up-scaled Mk1/Mk4

All the best and happy modelling

Bernie
