Lancia 1ZM model 1918 Armored car in Banghzi 1931 in 1:48 scale
This is my test build of my of my Lancia 1ZM armored car in 1:48 scale.
This model depicts the car as used by the Italians in Benghazi in 1931. The parts pages consist of three US letter size card stock. My wife's new-ish printer lacks a bit but works well enough to get the job done. I am starting with the wheels as I dread doing them. I deviated (on advice from another builder) from the parts as printed by cutting the discs out and the tire rim in separate pieces. I then layered the discs, four layers of mac and cheese box card boars between the two card stock pieces. It seems to have worked out well. more parts and pictures soon!

Got some work done. Front wheels, front axle, left and right side bulges and wheels... lots of coin discs ready to be turned into wheels anyhow. This armored car has between 7 and 8 depending on how many spares you want mounted...I was dreading the wheels. Now I am dreading the engine cover with all of those armored vents. What was I thinking?
Also managed to get the body made and fixed to the base. More to come soon...

Your newest model looks great, Corey!
As luck would have it, I'm also building the model at this time, so I can learn from your experience. I've recolored mine in the livery of the Carabinieri Reali, 1927. I downloaded the green version from Landships II, but the PDF wouldn't open in either Acrobat or Photoshop, so I sent it off to Zamzar.com, breaking down the multi-page PDF into individual .png files. The recolored parts pages are saved as PDFs. I was going to use sawtooth tabs for the tire treads, but I like what you're doing with the laminated and layered discs, so I might go that route instead. I'll be following along with interest.

Awesome. I am unsure what the PDF problem is. I am glad that you could open it eventually.
Some of these models have a straight left side that terminates into a letter box opening of sorts. The basic gray and green models do not have this. I am unsure why some pictures of these cars show this feature ans some do not have it. Strange. I have edge glued most of these parts. I had thought about adding tabs, but for the body anyhow, tabs have proven unnecessary for this build. We will see how it goes with the turret... I have gotten the top parts of the body on and they came out well. The four parts that make up the underside of the turret ring may be a challenge, we will see...

When I've had difficulty in the past opening a multi-page PDF due to it being "damaged or corrupted", the problem has been that at least one page is different from the others in some way: pixel density, overall dimension, etc.
The frame piece is 3 layers of card thick. Did you sit your body on top of it, or overlap it, using the thickness of the frame side as a gluing point? Yes, the turret underside looks fiddly, but I have faith in your design, LOL.

Hey Don,
I will look at the PDF and the pages and see what I can do... I actually set the body directly on the base. With the layered base well edge colored... I got the engine cover done. Those vent covers where a pain to do but they look pretty good! I scored all the lines on the base before cutting it out and then glued the vents in place before I cut it out. Then I cut out the piece, edge colored and glued it together. I was quite happy in the way it came out...

Got the turret ring underside and side bulges done with out fit problems. The only big problem is a blank spot usually hidden by the mud guard but this model has no mudguards... I will have to fix that. marker just does't cut it.

I had similar problems with the green Lancia .pdf in Acrobat but Adobe Reader worked fine (on a Mac).
I find the easiest way to do the laminated disk thing for the wheels is to cut out the wheel disks with a circle cutter then cut out another set of disks in thicker card just a whisker smaller in diameter than the wheel disks. The centre holes can be used to line the disks up when they are glued together. The tread strip then has a ledge to sit on when you glue this around the circumference of the wheel part. The wheels produced are uniform and quite strong. Charlie |

Done. Learned a few things along the way.
