building pallets

the fun part
i made a jig for positioning the boards
and then glued on the stringers
repetitive work makes you feel so productive
here are the return rollers, disassembled and stacked on the pallet

the wheels on the bus

go round and round
since i am going to be dispalying these dis-assembled
i leave the center in the center pieces and draw in the circle for the hub
because of the "wrap around" construction of the rim i end up with cracks
that have to be filled with putty
the model pieces were drawn without the "hub", just the cap on one end and the
seal on the other, but I need to show the hub. i will make the hub with a piece of
paper rolled and inserted in the center of the rim (these rims don't have their hubs yet)
these will be displayed stacked on a pallet, so i will only put in the full hubs on
the 4 that will be on "top" of their stacks

pieces and parts

like a little manufacturing line
i love leaf springs...they really look like springs!

i ended up having to number the pieces to keep them in order while gluing

pieces and parts

one after another

i glued the edge strips supplied in the model around the arms
as you can see my arms are not quite thick enough
no mind..one reason for making them solid is to be able to sand their corners to
the "rounded" look the real ones had...i'll just have to do a little more sanding

putting in the holes for the 2 shafts is a pain... i'll probably only do 3 and then
"stack" them on the pallet leaving just those three on the "top" of their stacks

more fiddly bits

springs and things
i find for small parts with holes next to the edges...best to do the holes first, before you cut them out
otherwise the holes often go off the edge
i think restorers might opt to not break the springs down into their component leaves
i think you need a special setup to fasten them together
