New Waynmac Beta

Hello friends,

So, on with another beta build for Wayne. This time it is the GPF 155 WW1 French artillery piece. It comes in two versions, grey and camouflaged on 7 pages of parts and has 34 pages of detailed instructions. A word about these instructions. I just love them, all of the instructions with Wayne's kits are excellent! They are a mixture of written, pictorial and with photos for some of the trickier elements.

I have made a start with the gun barrel and have closely followed the instructions here. Wayne has specified U.S. paper sizes which works out at 75gsm and 176gsm equivalent. These are difficult to obtain in Europe so I will be using 80 and 160gsm respectively. Having built a few of Wayne's kits, I have not found this slight discrepancy to be an issue.

Anyway, on with the build. I have rolled the inner barrel around mandrel cut from a 3mm bamboo knitting needle.

Quick tip! I bought an assorted pack of these from a thrift store for 50 pence (75c)

The barrel was glued along one edge and then rolled. Before gluing, I inserted the remaining piece of stock into the end of the barrel to support it for final rolling and shaping.

This extension piece was left in whilst I attached the barrel outer........

.......and afterwards removed.

Glad to see that you took up the Charlie/Wayne beta build offer, Bernie. The build is in good hands.

Thanks for the tutorial on barrel-building. I just ordered a set of 36 bamboo knitting needles 2-10mm.

Hope your build is going well Tim. Some updates. There may be some difficulty with part 9, which forms part of the gun slide. On the instructions it tells you to cut out the slots carefully before folding. Here is my solution for this part.

Firstly, refer to the attached PDF. This gives an outline of the scoring, folding and cutting sequence I followed. First picture, part pre-scored, slots cut and folded. You will notice that the inner parts have been folded in and left oversize. These will be trimmed later.

Next, the inside view shows the gluing sequence more clearly.

The tray is then folded and the inside parts glued in. As can be seen the slots are necessary for a clean finish on the inside.

The outside is then trimmed to size. When complete it is glued to part 8.

Does the annotated copy of your pdf help? Note that the reason for the three slots is to keep the parts aligned during the glue-up, so the openings remain even and properly aligned with the scored lines, so as to help folding the doubled part.

Yes, that helps a lot. I removed the long part in step #4 before cutting the slots, but the end result was as you intended.
