Build of the StuG continues and I have completed up through Parts 24 with a few other parts called out at this time which are out of numerical sequence but would be difficult if not impossible to install later on.
Looking at picture number one you can see a large interference issue between the transmission assembly and what looks like the brake assembly on the driver's side. Luckily I had not glued anything in at this stage other than the brake cylinders, so surgery was easily performed on the brake shield assembly to cut it down for proper fit. As far as diagrams and build sequence, I had to look at the sister kit to this one, the panzer III kit that GPM also published. It is the earlier kit and some of the parts carry different numbering that helped me figure out what really goes where. Also, I am finding the laser cut parts pack for the Stug to be missing a few pieces and I am having to break out my Bristol and 1mm card stock for lamination purposes. So this one is starting to approach the skill level three rating that it has on the cover. Certainly not one to cut your tank building teeth on for sure. greg

Same great build quality & skills I remember from the Scud project. Love the way you detail your experiences and lay out just what happened - good and bad alike. Agree with Don on benefiting from the way you meet & overcome challenges.

More progress. A bunch of accessories built and installed and an engine installation.
There is an issue with the tank installation just forward of the radiator. The left and right sides are supposed to be mirror images, but they are not. the right side tank locating mark needs colored gray. The top circular cap plate should also be moved forward (which I did not do). On the engine install, the locating marks for the two cylinder parts on the right side are up too high and the parts need to be located as a mirror to the left side, otherwise the exhaust header will not fit. All mistakes that could have been avoided with careful beta building on GPM or the designer's part. greg

The saga continues. The StuG now has fenders and some more bodywork installed. Some trimming of various pieces was required to get acceptable fit, but decent results are possible. One item of note concerns the photoetched fender hinge detail. The spacing between the hinges was not big enough to allow easy meshing. I got them to look passable , but they were fiddly and still do not look perfect when viewed up close.
The pictures show before and after touch up painting. If I have not indicated before, I'm using Testors Acryl Panzer Gray and it is a decent match. While no pictures yet, I have been working on the fender mounted components and tools. This has been a bit frustrating as the locations called out in the drawings do not necessarily allow for a clean installation of them all, a look online at photos of other examples show a few missing brackets and better representation of the actual shape of some of these tools. More on this in the next installment. greg

Lets talk about part numbers and pioneer tools. First a word about part numbers: for this build I have given up strictly following part numbers as a build sequence. I have decided they are merely suggestions. Case in point being the pioneer tools and other fender mounted stuff. All this "stuff" is in the 60 something part number range. But some later parts need to be installed first to allow for correct placement and avoid access issues later on. The rear intake assemblies and the side external peep hole part numbers are somewhere in the 100 range and need to be installed before the tools. Next a word on the pioneer tools: There are a crap ton of them. Many I have no idea what they are for. The build diagrams and placement suggestions are poor or non existent for some of them. So on to the internet I went. As you can see from the pictures below, I ended up using quite a bit of wire and plastic rod stock to fabricate many of the tools instead of using the poorly represented paper parts or rolling long thin tubes. Thankfully there were some nice brass parts on the photoetch frets to help things along. Then, after perusing the internet, I located the tools according to the most common locations I found. The shovel, I noticed is actually mounted on an elevated bracket which is not included in the kit, so I cobbled something together. Anyway, here are the results. The first picture is an early placement idea with some of the original paper tools. greg

Picking up where I had left off...
The front bulkhead and roof assembly are done. I considered having opening doors on the roof but ultimately decided to make the entire roof a removable piece to better view the interior later on. The front bulkhead required much thinking on how it was constructed and installed. The main bulkhead piece itself too a bit of noodling on how it was supposed to position in place. There were guidelines in the interior wall that were virtually useless, at least the bottom plate positioning lines. Then I had to pop a few pieces loose from the interior to get it in place correctly. Anyway after fighting it, I was finally satisfied with placement. greg
