Famo, trailer and stug III - long term project

Today my laser cut tracks for the Famo and Stug, frames for the Stug and photoetch for the Stug.

This will be the first time I've used photoetch on a paper project, so maybe a little bit of a learning curve.

I will start the build soon and most likely begin with the Stug.

Looks like a great project. With the help of the laser cut frames and the extra detail the photo etched stuff will bring, this will be a great model. I’ll be watching this build with interest.

Same here. Didn't vote for it but still watching with great interest.

Phase 1: The StuG III

Build has officially begun with assembly of some laser cut frame parts.

No fit issues at this point.

Skin parts 1 and 2 are installed first then all of the remaining part 1 components (1a - 1r) are fabricated and installed.

It seems as though some of the laser cut parts may be slightly undersized. I am concerned that this may have carried over to the main formers as well. I had to adjust the side skins to get them to line up with the holes on each side and this led to a slight unexpected overlap to the rear.

Also of interest is that the road wheel mounting marks do not exactly mount up with the details on the bottom plate. It's not by much but it is visible to me especially with the contrast that the white locating areas provide.

I am also using the available photo etched parts on this model. All of these parts will need to be painted. The first of these used were the hinges for the side access doors. Just like paper parts, the hinges had to be rolled. the brass was thin enough that it caused me little problem. One advantage was no delamination that occurs with tight paper rolls.

You are off to a fantastic start.
I like the PE hinge.
What other components are produced in photo etch?

Most (if not all) the hinges, control panel faces, tools, dials, knobs, etc, and the best is the intake grates on top of the hull for the engine/radiator which are loads better than the printed versions.

The remaining components of parts 2, part 3 and the first of part 4 have been installed.

The only issue I had was with the idler wheel tensioner rod assemblies. The rod came out ok, but the fit of what I guess to be a spring and its cover was vague. I installed the rod before I fabricated the spring and then realized the rod is supposed to go through the spring. I decided to cut a groove in each spring to fit over each rod, which seems to be a better course of action since nothing would have lined up as well, if I had built it according to the single diagram provided.

No issues with part 3.

The inner walls and floor of part 4 was printed as all one piece. I did dry fit it in place and found it fit well. However, when I went to glue it down, I cut the sides free and installed as three separate pieces for better control.

One odd thing I had read elsewhere and confirmed here concerns a "rivet counting" issue. The access covers on the bottom of the hull have corresponding markings on the inner floor. Except instead of being mirror imaged so they match up, the cover patterns are printed identically and don't after they are installed.

Also the side skins are looking more and more like they will need to be trimmed to match the formers. I'll deal with this as I go so I don't trim off more than I need.
