Now imagine handling 40+kg shells jostling inside a cramped cockpit while running across jagged terrain - those ISU-152 loaders had to be supermen!

I used to handle 120mm ammunition across country/rough terrain and it is not fun. The breech end of the gun swings all over the place sometimes making contact with the crew. Several tons of breech and recuperators, recoil buffers etc can concentrate the mind very nicely.

There were two crewmen to service the gun - a breech operator and a loader. Most tanks only had one man to load the gun. Wouldn't want the job moving the 40kg rounds though.

I don't think the SU-152/ISU-152 was used in a mobile firing role much. The firing rate of the gun was very low - only 2 -3 rounds per minute so taking on armour while mobile wasn't going to end well. It seems to have been used as a classic tank destroyer hiding in the weeds or as mobile artillery firing from static positions.

If you build the ML-20 you really need a towing vehicle. Anyone know of a 1:50 Komintern or Voroshilovets model?

Regards,

Charlie

Makes sense, much like a KV-2.

Right on cue:

It belongs to https://vk.com/album-44399115_166606618. There's also a ZiL-157, but it was not active at WWII, and I'm not sure it's enough to haul the ML-20.
