1/72 D-Day M3 half track
The next to the last model for my D-Day display at this weekend's event at the USAHEC in Carlisle is this 1/72 M3 half track by Paper Tiger Armaments.
I love this little model. It's very detailed for 1/72 scale, and after my recolor I think it will stand up very well to enlargement, so it is my intention to build another one in 1/50 scale - my preferred armor scale. There are parts in the kit to build the model two ways: either as a plain vanilla personnel carrier (my choice), or as a T19 105mm howitzer motor carriage. The half track isn't a stand alone kit, but comes bundled with the DUKW. A real bargain at $3. As usual, the written and pictorial assembly directions were stellar. If there is a weak point in this kit, it would have to be the tracks. They are double sided only part way around, so big sections of white are visible if the model is viewed from a level lower than straight on. I will definitely fix this when I build my 1/50 version. For my final trick before this weekend, I will be building PTA's LCVP landing craft. I also have their Stuart tank in my back pocket, but I think the landing craft speaks D-Day more loudly. Perhaps I'll print out a copy of the Stuart and work on it during the event. Photos were taken outside (I was so excited - the sun finally made an appearance. Look how green my grass is after all the rain). They're a bit grainy and contrasty. Photography is definitely not one of my skills.

We had one of those drive around last year at the USAF museum in Dayton. Isaac

Built up nicely. On the tracks, I thought the exterior of the tracks on these was rubber molded around an internal core of steel cables, therefore the tracks would not have a rust hue.

You will certainly have a fine assortment of D-Day vehicles to show, Don!
I'm afraid my own contribution will be limited to a pair of FG 1/48 Piper L-4s in D-Day markings. Otherwise, except for a somewhat lumpy 1/48 Murph North American NJ-1, I will be bringing the same tired models as usual. But I am eagerly looking forward to seeing you and the others. To remind everyone, the event Don is preparing for is the annual gathering of Paper Modelers at Army Heritage Days. In addition to Don, Greg Perry, Rick Steffers, Kevin Stephens, John Dell, Linda Kemp, Peter Ansoff, Jack Colin, and I will be displaying models this weekend. http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/671501-post1.html The flyover of a C-47 and P-51 (and perhaps some other aircraft) will take place at 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM on Saturday and at 2:00 PM on Sunday. Full schedule here: https://ahec.armywarcollege.edu/newsarticle.cfm?id=399 Sorry for the threadjack, Don, but it seemed somewhat relevant. Don too |

Don Hoping for good weather for the outdoor portion of the event as well as good representation of D day models indoors. Unfortunately, I do not have a single model from that period ( but I love playing Call Of Duty on my X Box ). Have fun. Isaac

Thanks for all the nice comments fellas. I really like this model and look forward to building a bigger version - the better to show off my recolor. BTW, pretty much the only parts I didn't recolor were the tracks. Dang.
