I have no experience with them, but I understand tank tracks are one of the big challenges in card modeling. Yours really look good.

Thanks Don, Sergio, Rifleman and Mike.

I thought i'd be finishing by now, but this project is getting bigger...

The grill on the engine deck is made into 3D. The piece left from the short 122mm barrel which I did not use, served as a perfect replacement sheet. There was just enough room to cut another copy of the grill.

Another detail is the ring (?) on the forward left mudguard, I added it as I found this location to be quite prominent and it's a substantial object. It is made from 0.5mm card, the centre pieces are doubled.

On the turret, I added hooks that lift the turret when it is serviced. I might also add the machine gun as I am building this model to resemble the variant featured in the World of Tanks game, as can be seen here
https://tanks.gg/tank/is-3/model?vm=visual

Next up will be more details on the suspension

Wonderful work Lex, those details look great. Added to the excellent WoT designs make a magnificent model.

I loved your "job done" details. Turret looks great in that photo.

An incredible amount of detail on the treads alone, I'll be following your progress...

Finish Line!

Sergio, Rafael and FRD, thank you for following this build.

As I examined the WOT model of the IS-3 I realised there are more details on the suspension. So these were added. The torsion bars and bump stops are added on each side. Turned out there isn't enough depth for the suspension (the problem was apparent as I installed the tracks), so the bump stops are made shallower than they really are. The torsion bar mechanisms also do not align as they should on either sides. So, what should have happened was:
IO IO IO IO IO IO
OI OI OI OI OI OI
but as the model is designed without them, as I added the extra detail it became
IO IO IO IO IO IO
OI OI OI OI OI OI
well guess it's not noticeable unless one looks at the bottom hull. Lastly on the suspension, the sprocket wheels received an additional layer of relief detailing.

Then I added more detail on the rear hull. The most prominent are the two spare track links on the bottom and the two steel cables around the rear section. The supports for the fuel tanks on the sides are also made, although this model does not come with those fuel tanks themselves. This state of display is consistent with what's seen in the game.

Lastly, the turret roof. Details were added around the hatches. Then it was an evening trying to design the patterns for the machine gun (in the game, IS-3 was initially modelled without the MG, but received it upon version 0.8.9 update which was after when this cardmodel was designed). The scale was small enough that a lot of details can be conveniently presented using paper thickness without feeling bland. It was then painted and slightly weathered with dry brushing.

New phone with better camera arrived just in time. The image is almost too sharp (I think it has a photo sharpen function) and the printed weathering looks excessive on camera. I might need to make adjustments to the camera settings...

With this, the build is officially concluded.

So, how does World of Tanks treat the IS-3?

The IS-3 is a well protected heavy tank of its era, but things are not the same in World of Tanks. Thanks to the way matchmaking is setup in the game, the IS-3 is matched against the likes of King Tiger, T34 Heavy, Ferdinand and ISU-152 as same-tier vehicles, and can sometimes be up-tiered to encounter the Maus, JagdTiger, T-54, M103, AMX30, or the like. To these enemies, IS-3 is squishy at best. 'Unfittingly' for a heavy tank, it does not have enough protection to weather a large portion of incoming fire from such enemies, so the game gave it enough mobility to instead be able to support medium tanks in a group. The way the game treats the tracks makes the IS-3's sideskirts notoriously well-protected when fired at a shallow angle, meaning it is common to find an IS-3 engaging enemies at very strange poses, like, the one shown here...

Lastly, I'd like to photo a kind of encounter that will resonate with any player... getting sidescraped by an AMX ELC and unable to shoot back
