M-1978 Koksan (scratch project)

I haven't built anything from scratch for a pretty long time but today I decided to start something. And what's more, you will even see some first serious progress in this first post.

Ok, let's talk about the subject. It's a North Korean self-propelled artillery M-1978 Koksan. Not much is known about it, it's still kept in secret, like the rest of NK equipment. What we know for sure is that it's based on T-54/55 or Type 59 tank and it's armed with 170mm gun.
For the first time, this artillery was spotted in 1978 in Koksan, North Korea(hence it's designation M-1978 Koksan).
The gun has a range that would allow it to strike Seoul from the DMZ.

My model will be in 1/50 scale because it's not too huge and not too small. I want to make it quite detailed and maybe even with some movable elements as well.
So far I've got the hull. It's taken from the free 1/100 T-54/55 by PRmodels. Obviously it's resized and reinforced with cardboard.

I started the road wheels. In the next few days I'll add some more details to make them more realistic.

I didn't have much time for the project today but at least I found 1.5 hour to do some more work.
More tomorrow.

The gun looks a lot like the Russian 180mm S-23 gun. I guess you could base your 170mm design on the S-23.

Charlie

Yes, the Russian S-23 is quite similar. But I think the more accurate option are WWII German 170mm guns(especially those from the Geschutzwagen Tiger prototype). I've read somewhere that the North Korea had acquired the blueprints of both Russian and German guns from Soviet Union and then they designed Koksan on this basis.

Anyway, before I start anything with the gun, there's plenty of work with the Type 59/T-54 part.

Here's what I did today:

I've also found some new photos from North Korean propaganda.
I'm wondering if anyone can decipher what is written on the black sign attached to the gun... Could be something interesting.

Looking at picture nr3 I thinking hull used here has been heavily modified with engine and/or transmission lower than in original tank. That's likely because there is a mechanism under and behind gun to anchor it to ground and absorb recoil.Over it and just under breach there should be hydraulic lift for loading gun.I also don't see any provisions or mechanisms for traversion of gun.

That gun must be bugger to move around but it's definitely cheaper option than good old SCUD missile system.Very labour intensive too-this is smaller variation on railway guns used since Boer Wars and those always need a lot of muscle.

I bet that plague says something along "this gun was purchased/dedicated in honor of some dignitary/communist holiday".
