Hi guys,

Maybe I can help with this request.. I am keith, AKA Papermaker, I am currently busy working on putting together a youtube channel, to show how to make models from nothing but paper, my first project is that of the HMS Ark Royal. I will show you how to measure up, put together, how to make guns that move, netting, and everything else. With no computer programs.. just good old plane geometry..

I will take you from a piece of paper, to a full blown model of the ship. telling you how to do it, providing step by step guidance. Plus we are giving away model kits every month..

Come along and subscribe, and learn how to do it yourself. from ships to planes, to tanks, cars, and guns, and about anything else that your heart desires..

First episodes should be live beginning of January with the actual model starting to be done around mid January (first couple of episodes include essential tools, and creating supporting beams (with paper))

so come along and watch..

cheers

Hi.

after looking at the design specifics for the Ark Royal (1938) version, I have decided that to begin with it may be a little too complicated, for those who are beginners at scratch building, so instead I have found a much simpler, smaller escort carrier the HMS Biter, to work on. I will be starting this model sometime in the next day or so, however, I have already uploaded some videos regarding the show.

we will get round the to HMS Ark Royal 1938 version, just not straight off the bat, However, the concept is the same for most model ships, so even just doing the Biter, you could quite easily follow along making the ship of choice.

Cheers

I agree Herky. I like the older and smaller carriers. They have a soul. I once converted the plastic Fujimi Ark Royal into its final angled deck fit. That was done with plastic sheet before I discovered paper modelling.
This whole thread is very interesting, and I will be tuning into the YouTube shows for sure.

Robert

If you want to convert sketchup to 3ds, why not just export from sketchup rather than save as? If you want a free alternative to autocad light go to DoubleCAD XT and go for the free version it is a native 2d application but will handle 3d files and has all the views you need for checking.

http://www.cse.psu.edu/~dunn/Alita/P...gProcedure.pdf Here is a description of how to create a template for carvel (butt joint) planking from a frame. Figures 6 to 8 seem to cover what we need to get the shapes of individual planks. Delft Ship produces the same shapes (or its predecessor; Free Ship did). the rest of the article addresses how to treat the thickness of the wood. This technique might apply to sailing ships, or small boats (not steel plated ships for sure).
