The only thing wrong with plastic is the price.

Plastic prices are one issue. Also consider that most of use here in all likelyhood would also go with aftermarket parts and that drives the cost up considerably.I dont consider us straight out of the box modelers.

Though my base material is paper I use plastic, metal, fabric-anything that feels suitable for the part on hand. tubes/cylinders-styrene. instrument bezels and micro sized bits-metal. rope-thread. and...I paint my models. for some that would be blasphemy

Don't be a snob!
Modeling nirvana is when you can build a model from pretty much anything (a joke about lint and chewing gum comes to mind...) Do it long enough and it becomes about the modeling, not the 'material'.
Sometimes, I feel anti-plastic sentiment (or at least derision) is in reaction to a perceived (perhaps experience-based) 'plastic modeler's' bias that paper is less "worthy". Of course, anyone who has seen examples of advanced paper modeling craft is quickly disabused of that idea. However, we shouldn't also fall into the same trap as paper modelers. Respect for the creative craft of others is respect for one's self. Whether you personally choose to forego a material or technique in your craft should not prevent you from appreciating the results of those who do not. Excellence by any means is still admirable as it shows discipline and perseverance. Now I've done my 'serious soapbox' bit, I'm certain AirDave who is a wise-cracking character in my experience only derides plastic because he can. - not because he really hates it! I'd stake my monkey on it! Being a "bi" myself, all I can say is my paper modeling efforts have paid dividends across the board; I find myself using my 'papering' skills all the time now. To see some of my latest *plastic* efforts, check out my modeling club blog article: Kit Smash! or “Making a mountain from a mole hill” – Part 1 | Hampton Roads Scale Modelers Cheers! Robert |

omg you've invented a whole new category.
one that many "phobics" will be afraid to use, I'm sure! LOL "bi-crafter" I....am a bi-crafter. no wait...maybe I am a tri-crafter? Which means I am open to all forms of ....craftiness. Its okay...you can call me "bi" or "tri". I'm secure in my craftulinity. ... You hit the nail on the head...its not about a dislike for plastic or any other medium. Its about the attitude from some "elitist" plastic groups towards paper modeling in general. The fact that they do not recognize that they already use a myriad of other materials in their "plastic" creations irks me more than anything. and I have fun "scaring the kiddies" when they use the word plastic here.
