I used to find out what the prototype I wanted to build looked like, take a knife to the commercial styrene offering and cut out the unwanted bits, then glue card stock under the holes and use sprue melted in lacquer thinner and air plane glue to fill in the gaps, then sand it until it looked like the offending part was never there. Was this the beginning of my transition to card,? I can't say.

I think that plastic is alright for enhancing models. Clear cockpit canopies on aircraft are one article that comes to mind, Printed card canopies detract a model that as taken days to build. On ships I use soldered brass wire for handrails, plastic rodding for masts. I tried rolled card, after a while it ends up like a dogs back leg as it has no give in it. It only requires a slight knock, whereas plastic rodding springs back. On buildings I use plastic for downspouts
and small chimney pots.If I ever get round to build a plane again I will us buttons for wheels with card inserts for the hubs, wire for the struts and undercarriage legs.
