I'm "that guy" on Facebook that will actually bother to fact check random things that come across my feed. (Enter your PIN number backwards at an ATM to alert police, anyone?)

This has never been done out of spite.

One time, I re-posted a blurb about the death of Rowan Atkinson (without checking).

One of my friends replied with a link to an article explaining that Mr Atkinson was in fact, very much dead and was simply the subject of (yet another) celebrity death rumor (as Mr Atkinson is English, perhaps that should be "rumour").

As to the intentions of the person who corrected me, I simply do not know.

Perhaps he wanted to embarrass me, perhaps he cared enough to want to see me not embarrass myself further.

However, I chose to own the correction, and was grateful for the reminder to be more careful.

I have been far more annoyed/upset in finding out that I had believed (and disseminated) false information than I have ever been by public or private corrections.

welcome to an open forum on the internet machine. as the old saying goes, 'if you can't take...', you know the rest. actually i think people here are the nicest you'll find, so much so that even an obviously horrendous modelling job is praised to high heaven. i regularly visit other forums, especially some polish ones, where people don't mince words. sloppy work gets called out. while meanness should be avoided constructive criticism can only improve all our skills.

I believe you meant to say "alive" there, not "dead".

I hope you don't mind me having to correct you.

I'm more than happy to be corrected and I'll gladly correct someone who's wrong. How else will I learn anything?Nobody's perfect.Too bad so many forget that.

Humility seems to be forgotten virtue lately. There is a good book with exactly that title.Good read.

HA!

Yes, I did mean to say "alive"...

And no, I don't mind at all.
