The next part that I began was the top access panel just forward of the cockpit (used for accessing the machine guns). The entire top covering over the machine guns is smoothly molded to cover the bulky guns while at the same time remaining aerodynamic. This makes for some tricky modeling - mainly in the preshaping of the paper parts. I needed to look at a few reference drawings of a real FW 190 A-8 to make sure that I got it right (see below images). There's also a funny shaping of the back edge of the panel where it meets the canopy, used as a "finger-lift" sort of handle to lift the access panel. Not easy to replicate at this small scale.

Yes, it IS very tricky...but I have to say that when you don't completely screw up parts like this, it is a good feeling! I love a challenge.

Hi Gordon,
very well! This was the time where i´ve made my fatal mistake! I´ve tried to follow with the fuselage outside the cockpit contours and not the markings in the middle of the parts, and this was it... Martin The next try was ok, and so my Fw 190 is now in service. |

The next part in this fuselage sub-assembly was the engine exhaust recess panels.

and finally...the completed top machine gun cover panel. This one took a while to form and get the fit just right.

Brilliant work!
How were you able to make those really narrow V-cuts on the gun cover? |
