Under the Russian system of naming their planes, the T50 will have an odd number as long as it is projected to be purchased by the Russian Air Force. The even number will imply an export version with different electronics, etc. Since the last number used so far is Su-37 for fighter and Su -39 for Ground attack (updated su-25), an educated guess is that this will be the Su-41!

I wonder if the Indian variant will be Su-40, Su-42 or an Indian designation of its own. Also, I thought helicopters got the even designation number, not other versions of a fighter?

Well its more complicated:
Su 20 -- export version of su17 Su 22 -- I am not sure if it ever flew with Russian Air Force Su 24 -- A bomber, with Russian Air Force Su 26 -- A civilian aerobatic plane Su 28 -- A civilian aerobatic plane Su 30 -- Export of Su27 Su 32 -- Side by side carrier version of a strike aircraft for the Navy Su 34 -- The new bomber (strike is more appropriate) for Russian Air Force So I guess the indian plane could be named either as Su 40! or Su 42, or as you say, as none of the above and get an indian designation...we shall see. |

Thanks for the insight, I forgot about even numbered jets like the fencer and fitter. I also got wires crossed thinking of Mil-mi helicopter even number designations.
