1/72 F-4U Corsair
Hi,
I've posted a few pics before, but not enough. Thought I try an experiment with a Fiddler's Green F-4U Corsair. From their sample there is no interior cockpit or clear canopy. I wanted to use blue craft paper that I had to get for a church poster/banner and, I have a lot left over. Pictures show the parts drawn using Auto CAD. The fuselage, wings, tail, rear stabilizers and landing gear. Looks like the print out on the blue should work, but for numbers and insignia I'll use the white standard printer paper. The blue will have to be laminated to get up to card stock thickness. So wish me luck; any comments and criticism are welcome. Jefferey L |

Some real work accomplished
and some model time too! Next step is to see if the cockpit fits into the fuselage. I know the control panel matches the upper curve but the side controls and seat back might have problems. Jefferey |

O.K. folks, those that have been following the build so far, here’s what has happened.
The cockpit floor is about 3/16” too wide. So I had to cut it down one side using the leftover excess as a glue tab. The pilot seat had to be narrower also. Having a former behind the cockpit makes the fuselage less "Squishy" it that's the right term. The wings are the fold over type so it creates the cambered airfoil. I glued the outer wing panels first then the inboard ones to make the “Gull wing” shape. The FG style uses a tab on the bottom half that fits into the fuselage slit. I assembled the engine cowling and put the motor disk too soon. I should have put the front angled piece then inserted the engine disk from behind. This way it would have made a more smoother nose cowling. But it’s not too bad. The cockpit “glass” is clear packing tape. It’s not the greatest because when it is sandwiched together sticky side to sticky side it becomes a bit cloudy. It’s still best to make a form and heat melt one from clear plastic sheet. I made the main gear a little more three dimensional with B.B.Q. skewers. A bit thick though. Took pics with gear down and used “fun tak”/ “quake hold” to attach them. A real wheel well would be a nice touch but for war-gaming purposes this plane should work out fine with the gear up. Not a bad build and relatively fast too. I probably can upload a blue and white PDF version if anybody wants to examine my CAD and photoshop skills. |

Thanks for the comments guys.
Looking at the photos, looks like the rainstorm that blew through kinda warped the port wing a little bit. I brought out my 1/72 P model and it's the same length and width. But the canopy is a bigger and the tail on my paper one is taller by an 1/8". |
