On wheels now
As promised , here are the pics of the wheels I turned ( more like file ) on my mini lathe. You can do it on a dremel tool or even a hand drill. I use a micrometer to keep the size of the wheels all the same since there are two each ( main and nose ). Wheels painted black and then glued the hubs on one side, attached to the struts and then finish the outer hubs.
The rest of the interior detail is next as well as the doors. Isaac |

I haven't been watching this thread as closely as I did the Gripen, but the model is shaping up very nicely.

A bit on the slow side for me. Very busy in the past month with traveling ( one more this week as well ).
I did finish the gear bay doors and holding off on the bay detail for now. Started working on the weapon pylons. Isaac |

Done with the landing gear area for now
I finished the landing gear bay doors. Straight forward work. Make sure you attach them correctly. There are 4 pieces to each main gear bay.
I still have to finish the internal compressed air/fluid tank and internal actuators, but I got bored with this and decided to do it later. So for now here are some pictures. Isaac Last edited by Isaac; 01-20-2011 at 07:15 PM. |

Weapon pylons
There are 3 pylons under each wing. All are different. Nothing to them. However, I decided to beef them up a bit. So instead of closing the mating surface with the wings off, I inserted short pieces of tooth picks cut to correct length.
I then drilled 2 holes in the wing per pylon ( approx 1/4 from the leading edge and 1/4 to the trailing edge of the pylon ). Widen the holes with the tootpick and then glue all of them ( 12 total ). While the glue is still setting, apply glue to the mating surface of the pylon and slide the correct pylon over the toothpick dowels. This serves 2 purposes, alighnment and strength. Please note that the kit photos and instructions are wrong with regard to the pylon location and mixes the inner and the middle ones. I used a good photo reference from airliners.net Cheers Isaac |

And now the external load
The kit offers a very impressive array of external load. I love the racks of 500 lb bombs and the drop tanks. The problem for me is that they use the dreaded petal concept. It is bad for me to do one piece, but 24 of them?
For the fuel drop tanks I have no choice, but for the bombs I may have options: I finished recently an Hasegawa 1/32 scale plastic F-16 in aggressor colors and there is no need for the external loads on that plane. So I have it all just waiting to be hung on something. There are all the Mk.82 500 lbs bombs beautifully molded as well as the racks. Also, there are 2 GBU laser guided bomb in the plastic kit that are also intriguing. I may build them all and see how they look Of note, the Aim-9 Sidwinder missiles are so wrong in thes kit, that it is not even worth salvaging. Also, the angle of the missile pylon is incorrect( that will be a later topic. That is all for this week, busy with other things Cheers Isaac |

I feel your pain re the thought of 24 x petaled bombs...I too raid my plastic spares box for underwing stores in this scale...fortunately for builders of modern (post-60s) US jets in 1/48 and 1/72, Hasegawa does a great range of underwing stores in about four different sets e.g. bombs, A2G missiles, A2A missiles etc...Trumpeter does sets of 1/32 weapons for US and Soviet aircraft but there are pretty pricey unless you score them with a kit...

Great idea to use the left overs and/or kit packs for the external weapons - building one bomb with the "Petal" designed in is enough, but you have toooo many for sure - although there are guys here that relish the challenge nowt wrong with that.... but heck, you'd finish up with repetitive strain disorder OR just go bonkers doing all those. Great job thus far

By the way, I am in your time zone this week. Here in Shannon Ireland ( and there are no hobby shops here at all ). Cheers Isaac |

I haven't tried it, but how about making a set of polyurethane molds of plastic bomb bodies and casting sets of them in paper pulp? It would be easy enough to add fins.
