The Fuselage completed

The issue with part 8 was resolved by keeping the cut out on top in place, but I did cut the green tabs for the cab and reinforced them with wood strips ( from a coffee stirrer ) I did trim back the upper portion of former E later on. Please note that this is a deviation from Ron's design and was unintentional.

The rest of the pieces were put together and assembled OK. I probably could have pushed the cones tighter, but they were fighting me and wanted to separate. Nothing major though.

The rear parts went on fast. Only mismatch was a slight issue on the bottom of part #4 bottom. I trimmed it to match the mating part.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09238.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09244.jpg

Working the tail section base, part R was a bit too wide, so I trimmed it as well.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09245.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09246.jpg

I now had the entire fuselage minus the extreme nose done.

Next were the pilot cabin upper enclosure. I bent the edges carefully and then glued the windshield aligning in the center first. When semi dry, I glued the windshield sides. Dry fit to the fuselage and trim the upper formers E and M if needed ( I did need to trim slightly ). Then run a bead of glue on the inside or the upper forward cabin and windshield and glue to the upper fuselage. I used a wood chop stick ( a great tool ) to push the wood re-enforcers on the green tabs against the upper cabin thru the upper turret opening. I then completed the rear of the upper cabin fairing and it was glued on perfectly. Great fit there Ron!!!!!!!!!!.

Isaac,
Part #R does not go in that location between the formers N & T. It
goes in the vertical stab buildup...Ron

Issac,
Former A needs to be flush with the front of the nose section skin.
Also you should have cut out the slots for the horizontal stabilizer
spar prior to assembling the fuselage segment....Ron

Ron

I knew that was the intent, so former A is not yet glued. It is simply in place. I will place it flush and glue a bit later.

As for the slots, it is a preference for me to cut after the part is built ( I think it forms rounder than having a slot, but that is me ). I use a sharp #11 knife and cut out it and any other areas in need.

On a separate note, I asked a fellow modeler ( in plastic ) to loan me his beautifly built B-17G in 1/48 scale. I will use it as a reference guide and later for a side by side comparison of my other thread of paper and plastic comparison.

Bombardier nose

Bombardier nose

The extreme nose section of the B-17 is a clear blown perplex transparency. However, I will use the kit parts 14, 15 and former part 16.

Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09263.jpg

I started with sanding part 16 smooth and gave it a small beveled edge to accommodate the inward angle of part 14 ( the main piece ). I also removed the center portion of this former. I used my favorite method of a paper punch. This tool is extremely useful for all internal former that need material removed ( for access to tools and to center them ).
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09269.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09270.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09271.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09272.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09273.jpg

Once done, I centered part 14 tick mark on the top mark with part 16 and only glued one side. I always have a hard time with parts that have multiply angles and curves in one part, so you need to do it one small section at a time or you get a tangled mess. I glued the rest of the part and joined to itself on one side only. I then glued to the bottom of part 16 and then went to the other side. I noted that there is some extra material on part 14 on the bottom. I had to trim it a bit. Once closed both sides and dry, I then burnished a bit on the inside to try to round it. Not too easy. I also noted that some of the color sort of faded ( probably since this is a Beta build ). When the kit is officially released you may want to print it in full rich color option ( if you have a printer like that ).

Part 15 is the flat part and with care goes OK as well. Since I had the center of former 16 cut out, I used a chop stick end to push out as flush as I could.

This did take a bit of a time to do. Again, you either work this part, or get the clear vacuformed pieces and do the inside.

Here it is attached to the fueslage

That is all.

Going out tonight

An now some more reference

Here are a few pics of the nose section of my fellow plastic builder's B-17G. He is a very good builder and was lucky to fly on the B-17 that came to our local Cincinnati airport.

Cheers

Smile The vertical tail

Not to get in the way of the Superball today ( American football to ya’ll ) , but lets continue the build before it starts.

The vertical tail

Cut out the pieces or parts 32 halves ( left and right ) , 33 which is just forward of it and then 34 ( forward fin ) that make up the vertical fin. Also prepare formers R, O and P.

Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09283.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09284.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09286.jpg

The assembly is straight forward. I burnished the leading edges of part 32 halves I then glued formers R, O and P in position on one half of 32 ( make sure you have enough clearance at the bottom as this fin glues onto the fuselage former N and T. Note that P is to be glued in about ¼ inch from the trailing edge of 32 ( you need that to allow for the rudder to slip in ). Once dry, glue the 2 halves of 32.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09285.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09293.jpg

I rounded the top of parts 33 and 34 of the vertical fin to shape and then glued them to the completed part 33 assembly. Went on OK. I did note that part 33 was a bit too long on the bottom once assembled. I slightly trimmed it to match the rest of the fin.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09296.jpg
Once that entire vertical fin assembly was done, I glued to the fuselage on top of formers N and T per the side view sketch. The fit was good.

Now the rudder

Conventional 1 part rudder, that is rounded in front and glued on the trailing edge. Insert former S to the bottom of the rudder to shape it. Do not yet glue it to the vertical fin until you get the rear gunner cupola and tail complete.

Rear gunner cupola and tail gun .

As a bit of reference, the B-17G has evolved and one improvement was the gunner visibility with the Cheyenne"-style rear gun turret. It is rounder and wider to give the poor guy a bit of elbow room. See picture here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:B17_tail_turret.jpg

The very rear of the gun turret is a simple 3 piece ( part 7 ) in which I glued the half round center first and then the 2 sides to form the turret.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09304.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09305.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09306.jpg

Our parts here are 35 and 36 which is the top. I rounded part 35 around the rear center window and then glued the top piece 26 by lining up the tick marks. Glue it except the forward edges to be glued onto the vertical fin. I also did not glue the forward sides of part 36 as it will slide into the vertical fin and end by former P.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09307.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09308.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09309.jpg

My piece of part 35 was a bit too long when compare with the other builds. My vertical tail was glued per the instructions, so not sure if it was more forward it would not look correct. Anyhow, nothing major, but here it is.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09310.jpg

Once dry, you can glue on the entire cupola in place. The fit was good.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09311.jpg
Now you can dry fit the rudder in place. I drilled a small hole into Former P and inserted a small piece of tooth pick and then cut a small hole in the rudder at the adjoining spot to use it as a guide and allow me to slide it back and forth to match the fin marking. It is not yet glued , but is in place.

Smile Horizontal tail

Conventional simple airfoils here. The former part Z is slipped nicely thru the fuselage part 4 cut outs. Align it so it is perpendicular with the vertical fin ( making sure that piece is vertical ), then glue in place I then glued thin strips of card stock on the top and bottom of former Z to form an I beam ( primarily to allow the horizontal stab , part 47 , to be glued smoothly without a crease showing ).
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09317.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09322.jpg
The horizontal stab is easy to build rounded in the middle, then glued to the trailing edge.

I was delighted when gluing parts 47 left and right by the great fit with the fuselage.
Ron's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09327.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09328.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09329.jpgRon's B-17G Beta build by Isaac-dsc09330.jpg

So more progress and that basically concludes the tail feathers.

As you can see from the last photo, here is the rudder tooth pick and I started with the wing spar construction.

Cheers

Isaac,
If you would have followed the proper build sequence on pages
25, 26 & 27 of the original build thread you would have had
a better installation. It appears the aft spar of the vertical
stab has been deleted. Is that the case?....Ron
