No more progress on the Vulcan yet. Still working on the kitchen (tho' that IS progressing well so far) but there is something Vulcanish<g>

Cosmo, one of the daughter's birds, decided to go walkabout (flapabout?) and ended up perched on the model. The camera was handy so here it is. Usually it's Gus that inspects things, but he knows that he's not allowed in my office (smart cat that). Besides, he's been busy inspecting the kitchen, so I guess the birdie decided to fill in for him.

Progress!

Got in a lot of cutting and gluing today, but not so much in the way of pictures. Fortunately there is another wing to do, so I can remedy that.

Pic 1 is the pile of parts that goes towards making one wing, minus the control surfaces. The group of large parts lower left that look brighter white are all 2mm, which gives me both more respect for the armour builders to whom that's a normal thickness, and a bruised index finger.

Pic 2 is that pile of parts all stuck together. From root to tip of the bare structure is 15.25" or 386mm. Skinning this thing may be even more of a challenge than the intakes were. Not only is the leading edge a joint, but it has several kinks and is under-cambered for half the span. What was I thinking?

There are also three movable surfaces per wing that will need to be built and hinged before the skinning begins.

It's good to see work continuing on this big boy, Mark! Excellent craftsmanship, as always.

Here are the promised pics of the other wing going together. Fit of all of the spars and ribs is quite good. The panels, a mix of 1 and 2mm, required a tiny bit of finagling. Some of them also have to be formed to curved shapes as the outer profile of the wing is a thin undercambered airfoil.

I switched a few elements from right to left to keep registration markings visible and useful.

Before the skinning begins I have to build all of the moveable surfaces and decide if and how I'm going to add attach points for hanging.

The fine work continues!

Good idea to consider the display requirements while the build is under way.

Oh No!....,

Shrike,

Dilemma: "I knew this thing was big, but not this big"...,
Sounds Like: "Bigger House"
Modelers solution: "Honey, how would you feel about a little home remodeling work...,"

While my boss would prefer a B-52, I've secured hanging space in the lobby at work, so that's not too much of a problem.

She did look at my funny when I suggested building a 1:33 F-9C, and hanging it from a hallway sized model of the hangar deck on the Macon. Just a 3 foot wide strip.....I'm sure we'd get used to walking around the fin.....

A few more pics of the wing under construction. I think the first one went together a little better, although I don't know if it was familiarity breeding contempt, or just all of the little mis-cuts on the first canceling each other out and the second getting together for a party. Oh well proof will be in the skinning.
