Underwing Stores, er store, er supermarket

The Avro Vulcan B.MkII was configured as a carrier for 'Blue Steel', a rocket boosted stand-off bomb.
The bomb itself is the size of a large WWII fighter, albeit with much shorter wings.

Construction was very straightforward in the 'butt joint' manner, with all but the aftermost section being simple tubes and conic sections. I discovered that most of the formers were under sized when trimmed to the line and needed a wrap of bond paper to bring them up to size.

I did say this was going to be big, right?

No surprises going together here. I did make a minor change from the instructions on wing structure. Originally it called for solid cores sanded to shape then wrapped with the skins. As thin and short as the wings are that seemed like overkill, a little crease to 'facet' the surface gave enough stiffness and dimension to work just as well (and was a lot easier<G>)

Excellent series of construction shots, Mark!

Step by step, this massive project proceeds.

Holly cannoli! These are amazing shots, and beautiful work Sorry about the whole Italian pastry thing. I'm trying to avoid sweets for a while. It's not going too well

You don't know how much that hurts. I grew up in St Louis, where there were three Italian language newspapers (the communist one, the fascist one and the shopping gazette - all put out by the same family) I haven't found a decent canolli in Phoenix in the last 15 years<WAHHHHHH!>

Oh forgot to mention that the seam on the Blue Steel is on the top, as that's the side tucked into the bomb bay. Not important, just an observation

Sorry for the cannoli shortage. There's a restaurant here in Omaha that has pretty decent stuff. Not nearly as good as the stuff I had in Rome a few years back.

With the exception of a few high end ones, there does seem to be shortage of good Italian restaurants here in the Phoenix area. Culinary comments aside back to the regular thread, am enjoying watching your build.

Added a couple of minor detail parts to Blue Steel. Not enough to be worth another picture at the moment.

I've been laying down the patterns for all of the formers and had a spray glue failure (here). The silver lining of which is that I discovered that I had laid out a page on the wrong thickness cardboard.

Those gear look excellent! It will be an awesome model from the looks of things.
I need to go watch 'Thunderball' now.
