Fokker Dr1 Tr- Plane

Ahoy been to busy flying my models and away from the builds in which i will get started starting with the conclusion of the DC3, Here is a scratcg job made from carfdstock wood and paper. this is a flying model I builr many years agao i cant remember when but i was young ans still knuckledragging in the Navy. I built this free flight gas job the Red Barron,s famous Fokker DR1 Tri plane this model stays in the air forever when powered by a 1959 O.49 Baby Bee engine. when the gas runs out she comes down fast not much of a long glide pattern. the ship is trimmed with left or right rudder and the stabilizers are movable for trimming. she will fly in a left hand circle for 4 minutes until the gas runs out and she will glide back to earth in a right hand glide to keep from chaseing it. I flew it yesterday for the first time scince 1970. I was amazed it still flew. the plane was built useing cleveland design model plans these plans are a treasure to behold Edward Packer is a master in designing such great designs of a bygone age of model airplane development. Heree is the Red Hen

Looking at these pictures brings back alot of fond memories. The Dr1 was one of my first stick and tissue builds.

I still have that model, it's a Guillow's i think.
It's all togehter, but not skined yet. Been looking
for a nice pattern. Every one wants to make
the Red Baron but I,m wanting a right from
the factory scheme. Maybe someday.

Awesome build, and glad it flew again! I'm fortunate to live near the Olde Rhinebeck Aerodrome, so have seen the real McCoy (well, a replica, I guess, with original engine and structure, etc.) fly. I remember seeing it for the first time in '69. The DR1 and DR7 are my favorites.

Thanks fellas
The Fokker Tri Plane has always been one of my favorites of the first world war. From my understanding piloting the real machine is hard to master on the ground and in the air, you have to use a lot of aleron on the ground durring take off the tri plane has a habbit of falling on a wingtip. mine does the same thing but I added about 2 percent dihedral on all 3 wings to stabilize flight and glide when she gets her tail up she starts to fall on the wing tip and straightens her flight pattern, circleing in a left hand pattern she reminds me of the turkey vultures out here in ohio very big birds, I took her up for the first time in years the other day she flew up to 200 feet got caught in the thermals two male turky vultures flew right with her checking the red hen out and the gas started to run out and she lost altitude and raced to the ground flying in a right hand glide pattern I was getting worried at first with these huge birds flying next to her. Buzzards are usually not territorial and attack other birds or anything in its way but they are very currious, it landed safe with no damage a good landing. after that flight she is retired for free flight now its time to get into my card models and get back on track I thought a little varity will be something different. I would love to thank everyone here on the replys to manfred von richtofton Red Hen thanks shipmates

Hey there Skipper - glad to see this one up, she looks really nice. Also glad to hear that you will be resuming the DC-3 soon.
