100 Years of Naval Aviation

National Museum of Naval Aviation is hosting a series of events to celebrate their beginning: 18 Jan 1911 with Eugene Ely landing and taking off from a deck built on the USS Pennsylvania near San Francisco.

Didn't find a model of the Curtiss pusher Model-D flown by Ely, so ...

For those near Pensacola, next week is the 2011 Symposium at the Museum. National Flight Academy christening is Friday, 6 May at 0830 with Gene Cernan speaking.

Thumbs up There will be more

A friend is building a fleet to celebrate this milestone. So far 34 out of planned 50 or so 1/72 scale plastic US Navy aircraft. He will enter it in the Cincinnati IPMS contest this October 1st , 2011 here is the link to the contest
Welcome to Cincinnati Scale Modelers

Reason for this is for my paper modelers friends in the Tri state area around Cincinnati to get ready and build. Be there and bring as many as you can. It is a paper friendly venue

Here is a link to the ones I displayed last year

Nicely done, Isaac! Drop me a PM and I'll email you the file for the Curtiss if he needs it. No instructions yet and a pretty simple rendition (cartoon, well short of FG quality).

He'll be there for sure, his current plane build is a 1:1 scale F6F Hellcat from the bottom of Lake Michigan.

I wish I could make it but alas, I can not.

Take Lots of pictures........... and enjoy the new "hanger"!!

Big thanks, Yogi.
A milestone in aviation History.
The first aircraft to land and take off from a ship.
The grandfather of naval aircraft.

Posted an update to the Curtiss in the downloads - now with instructions and a slightly better chassis interpretation (can't really call it a fuselage and it does more than just act as landing gear ...)

Anybody try it yet?

Yogi (should drop one off with the National Flight Academy this morning as a "housewarming" gift - they commission the facility today)

And to close out, dropped off the Curtiss at the National Flight Academy during their "commissioning" ceremony. While not yet fitted out, the CVT-11 Ambition is open for business.

Will pass the Cherub and two Angels to them on Monday.
