L-5 by Kampfflieger
Here's an update on the L-5 that Roman designed for my contest.
This picture is of the model as it sat a day or two ago. I was dry fitting a couple of sub-assemblies. So far it's coming together quite nicely. I've got about 3 other versions of the bird about to be available on my website, but sent them to a friend of mine who's writing a book on the L-5 and I've got a bit more work to get it accurate enough to pass full inspection. It's going to be pretty nice when it's done, though. New additions will include factory spec camouflage scheme, more accurate panel lines, tweaked details, historical markings, and maybe even a civilian bird or two! Ryan

This is really nice, Ryan. I have my own L-5 under construction, but it is still in the early stage. I probably won't finish it until next week as I am crashing this weekend on book revisions due Monday, but it is the current project (temporarily put on hold last weekend when I built the Trotskiy Fieseler).
What kind of paper and card are you using? Don |

110# card - that's just about the only thing I use. I really hardly ever finish anything, not that I ever start anything, either.

Excellent work on the L-5, Ryan!
And thanks for the shots of the old balsa L-5 kit. As I mentioned in another thread, I built one of those some time around 1950 -- I didn't do justice to the kit and wish I still had it. Don |

If you look real close at the top of the paper in the second-to-last photo it says Taylorcraft...
It's an L-2M kit and I hope to have something up on Lbirds.com soon Ryan

Yes. I see it now. Obviously, I've been posting too hastily today -- being somewhat distracted.

It's finished!
Here are some pics... This'll be part of a L-birds display for airshows and such! Ryan

That is a really nice 1/72d collection, Ryan. Fine work on the Sentinel.
I am sending the last revised chapter of "Over the Beach: Army Amphibious Operations in the Korean War" to the editor later this morning and hope now to be able to get my own L-5 off the workbench. Incidentally, noting the appearance of a couple of 1/48 versions of Kampfflieger WWI aircraft, I wonder if the L-5 will appear in 1/48? Are you there, Roman? Don |

Stinson Sentinel in 1:48
I made a real quickie of enlarging Roman's Stinson Sentinel to 1:48 scale, parts only sheet. (The instructions, etc., is already there in the original kit.)
The it struck me that Roman hasn't offered this as a completely free model, no strings attached, so I had better not publish it here without permission (which I did first without thinking). Awaiting Roman's permission I have removed the download. Sorry for acting prematurely. However, let's discuss the process as such, now that I've done it. When enlarging a kit like this, open the original pdf-file in a vector program. Select all, and enlarge to 150 percent (to go from 1:72 to 1:48). DO NOT enlarge lines. This way you get a version which is actually better than the original, since the lines are proportionally thinner. Choose a drawing area of 279 x 210 mm, which is universal A4/Letter. You may need to rearrange parts ever so slightly to fit this paper size with some room to spare. No guarantees, of course, that the fit of formers etc. remains the same. Slightly thicker paper might be in order. I notice that the model is wide open to include an interior and transparent windows. It would be a kind of suitable challenge to try for the transparent windows. I am thinking about layers of clear tape, one rather broad on the inside, and then another layer on the outside, cut very neatly clean along the borders to adhere only to the inside layer, and just the rims. I have made some trial attempts along those lines and it does seem to work. But you should probably print several window frames to allow for trial and error. Also, cut out the window panels only (and leave extra paper on the outside of the frames). Tape twice, clean up, and only then cut the outside rim.
