Fokker F.II, JB Models, 1/250

Dear congregation!

Finally it is time for Jacek's F.II to be built by someone in the one and only true scale (i.e. 1/250), so here I am!

I've decided to build the same plane as in the kit, but in an earlier fit with the original engine and cowling, still registered in Germany as D-57. There is a nice photo of her in the database of the university of Zuerich, which was my main reference for the modifications. You can identify my changes in the picture below: Mainly, they are the new cowling, the removal of the KLM crest and the dark undersurfaces of the wing and the horizontal stabilizer. Additionally, I've rearranged the fuselage parts to ease alignment and eliminate one seam between the cockpit section and the aft fuselage.

The parts are printed and I shall do the first cut this week.

Bye!
Michi

Thank you all for the kind words!

That's sad to hear, Jacek. On the other side, it's still better than having no work at all and not knowing how to pay your bills!

Tonight I've finally begun with the build, and - because this is the part I expect most trouble with - I have started with the engine cowling. Well, it was not a complete failure, but I'm not entirely happy with the result, either.

Problem number one is that the louvres lack contrast and are almost invisible. Making little cuts in their place improved only little...

Number two is that the alignement of front and back half could be better, too. Maybe two formers at the joint instead of the longitudinal tabs will do the trick...

Bye!
Michi

To me, this seems like microscopic brain surgery!

Fine-looking cowling in any scale.

Thanks, Don!

I have to admit: The "nerd glasses" do help!
(And just in case: This is not where I live, but the hotel terrace during this summer's holiday trip to Italy)

Hello group!

Tonight a wee update, I've tackled the fuselage:

First, the formers of the aft fuselage. Nothing special here.

It eased construction considerably that I've rearranged the fuselage parts beforehand. Thus, when I had gleud the upperedges of the fuselage sides to the upper former (which is fairly easy) all parts automatically were well aligned.

Then, I installed the firewall and the inner cockpit walls (only inserted in this picture) to get the correct position of the cabin front.

Glued in place...

...cockpit top and engine cowling added - done!
Well, that is for the moment. In the red circle, you see where I mucked up the fuselage during touching up the edges.
That means that I will do the fuselage again, this time with the aft fuselage top and the cockpit interior and - not the worst! - with a good deal more experience!

Excellent step-by-step images.

I see what you mean about the fuselage, although I do not think it will be very noticeable.

Nonetheless, the next one will inevitably be better yet.

Thanks, Don!
Well, the trouble is...

I wasn't in the mood to do the necessary changes to the graphics this evening. I built the wing, instead. I did not use all parts for the inner structure, but only the spar, the wing ribs, and the middle thingy.
I've added two tabs from cigarette paper to the centre section of the skin, rather for preventing the outer skin from sliding under the centre part than for actual glueing.
I had also rearanged the wing tips before printing, i.e., I had connected them to the outer skin. This workes fine - at least at this scale. I've added tabs under the wing tip-skin-joint (though i should have used ordinary paper for that, not cigarette paper).

Yep, and that's it for tonight!
