FG Luftwaffe F-86 Sabre

Hello again, today I have a model I made a while back. Its a F-86 sabre in the Luftwaffe colors that FG offers when you buy the model. In my opinion, I think that the Luftwaffe really knows how to make their jets look AWESOME yet still do the job. Here's a picture.

Nice one.

Actually, this paint scheme is one of the Sabres flown after the war by the highest scoring ace of all time, Erich Hartmann. This is easily recognizable by the black "tulip"-pattern on the nose, which he also used to paint on his Me-109's

Thanks for the info Chris. And if you don't mind me asking, aren't you the owner of Stahlhart Papercraft? If so, I would like to say, I love you're models. I have one of your F/A-18 Hornets hanging right above my head.

Mr. Hartmann was the commander of the new formed Bundesluftwaffe JG 71 Richthofen in 1956. All aircraft including the training aircraft T-33 wear the tulip paintings ... red for the first and yellow for the second wing. Personal aircraft of Mr. Hartmann was JA-111 ...

With lovely greetings
the Wilfried

Haha, I already wondered, why there are so many different versions of the Sabre with Tulip-Markings. Pity the FG-Sabre isn't JA-111. I also think it's strange how the markings are three-digit numbers, when the Post-war Luftwaffe numbers are usually two groups of two digits. Do you know how come, Wilfried?

I'm indeed the "owner" (so to say) of Stahlhart. I'm happy you like my models, F4Phantomman, I'm really sad to have little time for them recently.

Well done, Phantomman!
You don't get to see one of the FG Sabres too often.

Chris,
it's true, the folks at JG 71 painted virtually everything with tulips - even at least one tow tractor!

The XX+XX designation system was only introduced in the mid-sixties, beforhand the GAF used this two-letter-three-numbers system.
The first letter indicates the type, the second letter the number of the unit (in this case 'J' for a fighter wing, and 'A' for the first), the first digit indicates the squadron ('2' for the first squadron), and the last two digits are the number of the plane (Though, I'm not sure how they were actually counted. Probably this was done for the whole wing - I doubt that one squadron alone had 49 or more planes...).

Fiddlersgreen has several German Sabres and - of course! - one of them is Hartmann's JA-111. Maybe Phantomman will build that one, too?!
