The final steps. Attaching the tiny motors to Mercury, and the float struts, and then jigging the floats into place. The distinctive windscreen has gotten lost at this scale - may try painting it in black.

And here is the Maia. Truss built out of tiny basswood strips, then painted silver. Wing floats attached after cutting out the struts already glued in place, and then motors. The fit has been excellent, and the build intuitive.

And the Composite. Mercury sits comfortably on the truss, and detaches readily. Clearly an adventure to launch. Mercury's floats are just a yard or so from Maia's propellers, which must have given someone the willies. The video shows Maia diving and Mercury climbing as soon as they detach.

Rob and Gary,
Excellent build of a brilliant design. The silver paper worked very well for this model. I didn't know this was available. Short Brothers were cutting edge in the beginning, as they were the first commercial aircraft builders having licensed the Wright Flyers, then they designed and built the first twin-engine aircraft. Shorts also invented the boat-hull floats that are now used exclusively on aircraft. My Dad founded Shorts' North American marketing operation in the early 1970's so I've always had a soft spot for Shorts' aircraft. Thank you for bringing back some wonderful memories. |

The final result is most impressive, Rob!

Very inspirational, I'll give it a try at 1/200 on chrome paper, but no guarantee of success.
