You know you should patent this....get some company to make them out of plastic....there are a lot of fishermen-pilots (more than you might think) out there, and I bet a lot of them would love this....who knows they sold millons of pet rocks, might be you ticket.....Rich

Fly fishing

WOW,,,
thanks for all the nice comments guys !!!
To answer some of your questions,,,
I have already tried fishing with two of these lures already.
The first was, ( WAS ) a WWII Spitfire fighter airplane lure.
I coated it with gig coating thinking that might make the little guy waterproof.
My wife shot pictures and a little video of me trying it out at a
local lake.
Well,,, the lure eventually got water soaked and first the wings fell off.
Then the tail feathers and tail went.
Then the prop went.
I wound up with just a fuselage,,, but I saved it just for the heck of it.
Then I coated an ARMY P-40 Warhawk WWII fighter airplane lure with
that 5 minute mix epoxy glue.
The thing about using this is you have to work really fast when coating the
lure,,, and you WILL loose the brush. So use an inexpensive brush because
you will get only one use out of it.
We went back to the lake and I tried again.
The wings got leaks from where I missed the coating just a tiny bit and the
thing got soaked from the inside.
BUT it stayed together this time. And it eventually dried out too.
Got some more pictures of this try, and a little video too.
( NOTE,,, my wife's camera doesn't shoot the greatest video,,, but at
least we got some.)
Sadly I haven't caught a fish with one yet.
I will fix the P-40 lure and try again.
Sure is cute on the line with the little sharks mouth on it.
As soon as I can catch a fish with one I will post it for all to enjoy.
Thought that would make a real cool fish story too.
(( Imagine talking with the guys at the bar,,, " hey what did you catch that
fish with?" " OH,,, a WWII P-40 Warhawk fighter airplane." ))
That would be a real eye opener.

So as to the question about hook size,,, I use what hook will fit the size of the airplanes fuselage. I make them barb-less too.
Being I'm a fly tier,,, I have lots of materials and hooks to play with.
If you guys want,,, I can add some pictures from the first two trys
so you can see that I really did fish with these.
But the lures are not coated when I mount them in the clear boxes.
Only if I want to fish with one do I take it and coat it for waterproofing.

Also,,, if anyone out there owns and fly's their own airplane,,, and would
like me to make one for you to display in your home or office,,, just
contact me about it.
I will make them for fishermen too,,, or anyone that enjoys them.
Just PM me with your e-mail address.
I also will think about the idea about the banner being towed behind the airplane too. Might have to give that a try.
Don't know how many of you guys are aware of the re-paints that I
enjoy doing,,, and posting.
Specially the re-paints that Bob Martin and I did this year for the
(tribute to Veterans of wars) airplanes.
But take a look back at those and you will see that anything is possible with paper.

Musicman,

I love your idea. Actually because of your idea it help me in a little problem I was having. I have been racking my brains trying to figure out how to get a decent loop on these buoys I been making for the ships I been designing. Well I have tried all sorts of thing and then low and behold you posted this. A light went off in my head and I realized I could use the eye off a fly hook. So I went to my tackle boxes and dug out some hooks, cut them up and then drilled holes in 6mm airsoft bb's and assembled them. Got to say they look good.

Thank you again for this brilliant idea.

I hope one day you catch Walter with one of those little planes.

You're gonna catch a bunch of paper modelers with those lures! Better get a BIG stringer!

Best Regards!

Thanks for the link to the fish Yankeeboy.
They look really nice.
BUT,,,
I tried to download one and it looked kinda pixilated.
Did you have any better luck with it?
Let me know.
Would be fun to build one for my father in law.
He is a fishing fanatic.
Got him some wooden carved trout on a stringer a few years ago,
and he loved it.
He hangs them outside on the deck in the summer time.
