wing tips

Next up are the ends of the wings. The Kikka has a sort of gentle gull wing front profile shape. The aerilon isdesigned to incorporate this bend as a little cheese wedge shaped piece inboard and reflects the gentle bend. In this scale I might have done a little poetic artistic license and just made the aerilon one piece only on the outer segment. It works as designed but was a small pain to line up well. The starbd engine went right on with a perfect fit, the port is to follow....

Very smooth work on the wing-to-fuselage and nacelle-to-wing joins.

Some of those images (5 and 7) really evoke the power and beauty of the airplane.

Tail feathers

Next is on this dragging on into spring project, is the tail sections. These are pretty cool separate control surfaces but lack any specific area to join the sections. There is a little skeletal framework for the stabilizers and the finished pieces fillet in well to the fuselage but without a definitive join area the effect is a little less than authentic...

In some of the images the fairings between the hortizontal stabilizer and the fuselage stand out a bit, but in the last photo they seem to blend in well and the overall effect is very realistic and pleasing to the eye -- my eye, at least.

almost done...

after many delays finally down to the last bits. The canopy was vacuformed and installed, then the relatively simple landing gear was added. These were tightly rolled tubes and laminated tires. I tried just layering the tires to get a stepped tread effect, I'm less gthan thrilled with the result but frankly almost burned out on what was supposed to be a simple QUICK build!!!!

I think it looks great, Ted. At extreme close range, the tires are slightly ragged, but at normal viewing distance, the effect is quite realistic. That first image is the bomb, as Carl might say.

Ted, for my 2 cents I'd say the tires look fine. I ditto what Don said about them. I like what you've done here. The vacuform canopy looks great on this one.
